how on earth do you shop in a supermarket with a pram?

babyonboard · 27/01/2006 13:14

can someone please advise..i'm sick of going to the supermarket and only being able to pick up a few things.
we have a massive basket underneath the pram so it'd be handy if i could put the shopping in there as i go round, but i'm not sure that that is a 'done thing' at the moment i just balance whatever i can ontop of the carrycot, which isn't much!

I used to put mine underneath so long as there was nothing else in it, though mine was litterally a wire tray type thing. Is yours the netted sort of basket?

LIZS · 27/01/2006 13:16

I used to stick a basket on the carrycot. Could you get a basket underneath so it is obvious you're not shoplifting ?

misdee · 27/01/2006 13:16

i use the basket undeneath for things like milk, bags of spuds etc. sometimes i do get followed by secruity but they get all embaressed when u get to the till and unload the stuff underneath.

Dinosaur · 27/01/2006 13:16

Push one-handed, carry basket in other. And I do put bulky items in basket under buggy.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/01/2006 13:17

I sometimes lock the pram up outside (always have a lightweight cheap bike lock with me for this), and then put the baby in the trolley. But then, I have to be sure I can fit all the shopping on the pram, or in my backpack.

mazzystar · 27/01/2006 13:17

its why they invented online shopping

Enid · 27/01/2006 13:17

internet shopping

hang basket off top of buggy handlebars

Fimbo · 27/01/2006 13:18

Are you walking there and back? Or going to the supermarket in the car? When I used to be able to walk to the supermarket, I would put my buggy/pram into the trolley lockers next to the cafe and then transfer my dd into the infant seat on the trolley.

katyp · 27/01/2006 13:19

M&S are now doing new fabric type baskets in their clothes sections - the handles loop onto buggy handles really easily so I take one into the food section if I need to shop there. Doesn't help if you have a pram though...

Jasnem · 27/01/2006 13:21

i used to put the shopping under the pram unless only buying a coule of things.

babyonboard · 27/01/2006 13:22

yes i walk there - it sound sad but i quite enjoy walking through the park to the supermarket - i don't get out much these days, hehe
its a large metal basket underneath, but quite finely meshed so i could put stuff under without it falling through.
maybe i'll just do that and ignore any funny looks.

I used to go every day, just as an excuse to get out of the house, and if you go to the same shop, they soon realise tht you aren't shoplifting, and give up on the funny looks.

tassis · 27/01/2006 13:34

put on you best "dare you to stop me" face and load up underneath.

I've done that regularly - much easier than holding baset and pushing one handed - and never been stopped.

madmarchhare · 27/01/2006 13:36

babyonboard, do you have a car?

milward · 27/01/2006 13:38

Take a rucksack & put your shopping in as go round. Has advantage that you'll be ok carrying it home. If you can load things into the pram basket the prob is getting it all out at the checkout.

KateF · 27/01/2006 13:38

Hook the basket over one arm and when it gets too heavy push one-handed. You get very strong forearm muscles . I also shove spuds and milk in the pram shopping tray.

babyonboard · 27/01/2006 13:38

no we don't have a car, and we don't really go shopping together, which would obviously be easier as we prefer to do fun things during dp's time off.
i'll just go ahead and put it under the pram, perfecting the don't dare try and stop me look right now, hehehe

A pram's no bigger than a trolley, is it? So no reason why not from that POV. I would take the cover off though so they don't suspect you of hiding stuff inside!

(Am assuming you mean coachbuilt rather than travel-system?)

I used to put the shopping in the basket under the buggy at my local Waitrose. I am a regular there and the staff all know me so no-one ever said anything. If you are a regular and you put the shopping in the pram basket I wouldn't have thought anyone could complain, just do it really obviously and in full view.

babyonboard · 27/01/2006 13:44

i could of course take ds's head hugger and put him in the trolley seat, need to get a bike chain first though!

Ignore the funny looks babyonboard - it's what I used to do, and I had to literally stuff items all round the pushchair, in the buggy snuggle and everything! In terms of the shop, they can't do you for anything if you then pay for all of the items. I think they just got used to me in the end, magicking bags of carrots from behind DS's ear with flick of the wrist...

Can't do it now as DS is old and mischievious enough to throw everything out of the pushchair so just walk to the local butchers/greengrocers instead. I ahve to be careful in shops full stop actually - he can have whole displays over in seconds by reaching out and he's only 13 months! Help!!

babyonboard · 27/01/2006 14:27

lol squarer, can't wait til my ds is old enough to cause such mayhem.
my mum used to make a beeline for the ready cooked chicken section in the supermarket and stuff a southern fried breast into my little sisters hand to keep her distracted from pulling things off the shelves.
very annoying when they had sold out though, as she'd yell 'chicken' 'chicken' the whole way round, hehehehee
i must admit ds has been pushed home with a baguette tucked in next to him on many occasions
i'm off now, and will just shove everything under, ignoring the funny looks and tut tuts when i take forever to load everything onto the tills, hehe

I've got a bit old Silver Cross pram, which I got second hand when ds was a baby and it's absolutely brilliant for shopping as you can fit so much in the basket. I always put stuff in it and no-one has every said anything. I once managed four carrier bags full (proud emoticon )
