Someone just nicked one of my bags of shopping at Tesco

I was distracted because my pin was wrong (chip and pin)so must have forgotten to pack one of my bags in the trolley.
Well it seems like the guy behind must have thought it was his birthday, as I just called the store, and no it isn't at the checkout.

I know it is my fault - but would you take someones groceries if they left them behind - I wouldn't.

What abummer!
I was packing in our supermarket a few weeks ago (for schoolfundraising)and the woman on my till tried to pass two counterfeit £20 notes.
Big scene, supervisor and security called over, lots of shouting and swearing. Anyway,in the kerfuffle she legged it with her trolley!
They all ran out after her (it was like a Benny Hill scene) and apprehended her lobbing stuff into the boot of a car while her mate was gunning the engine.

The excitement nearly did me in!

littlemissbossy · 22/01/2006 16:12

no I wouldn''t either! what did the store say? have they got it on CCTV - it's theft after all

unicorn · 22/01/2006 16:15

customer adviser not particularly sympathetic... just a case of ' well there's nothing been left at the till'
don't suppose you could prove that the bloke deliberately stole the bag.. he would probably say he thought it was one of his.

littlemissbossy · 22/01/2006 16:17

Nah!!! he must have seen it and realised straight away it wasn't his. Of course it's proving it, but he would have realised at home that the items weren't his. Write to Tesco - get some vouchers off them at least!

Lonelymum · 22/01/2006 16:23

How extraordinary. No, I would not take someone else's bag - that would never occur to me. After all, you have just got together all the things you want, so why take someone else's stuff? Can you work out what was in the bag? ie was it something desirable like alcohol?

sparklymieow · 22/01/2006 16:25

did they check with the checkout person, maybe they handed it to a packer or something and its been put somewhere. From working on tills myself, its very odd that someone would just take TBH, normally they said straight away 'oh they've left their shopping' or the cashier will notice it.

satine · 22/01/2006 16:26

Hope it was nappies and bum cream, or tampons...or even better a mooncup

expatinscotland · 22/01/2006 16:28

That's lame!

I wouldn't take someone's groceries b/c it's wrong and also b/c I've had times where I could barely afford to eat and if someone had taken my food I'd have been in a bad way, so I couldn't do that to someone else. But maybe whoever took them was truly hungry.

littlemissbossy · 22/01/2006 16:28

Truly hungry, my arse! Just truly dishonest.

Lonelymum · 22/01/2006 16:29

Nice one Satine!

unicorn · 22/01/2006 16:35

just emailed Tesco asking for a refund.

They must have cctv or something (imagine if you were using a nicked card or something)
I also said if there had been a packer this wouldn't have happened.

Yes.. it did have a bottle of wine in (dh not happy!)and some other bits and bobs..
I expect this geezer spotted the wine and saw me flustered and thought 'yep, I will have that'

Lonelymum · 22/01/2006 16:37

Hmmm not surprised there was alcohol in it. That explains a lot, doesn't it?

unicorn · 22/01/2006 16:40

wondering (very sexist I know)if it would have been handed in if a woman was a woman behind me in the queue?

Don't suppose it matters really.. plenty of dishonest women too.

OP posts:
unicorn · 22/01/2006 16:41

ie if a woman - not a man, was behind me in the queue!

Had a reply from Tesco.... not particularly helpful.

This is annoying but it was hardly tescos fault, my husband wouldnt notice if someone had left their shopping he would just assume the cashier had packed it as he was unloading the trolley. He would only notice when he got the bag home.

serenity · 23/01/2006 14:42

Have to agree with Lucy I'm afraid. It's pretty frustrating you've lost your shopping, but's hardly Tesco's fault you forgot it or that the next customer was less than honest! I think your expecting a bit much asking for a refund tbh.

serenity · 23/01/2006 14:43

'but it's I should say, where did that disappear to?

misdee · 23/01/2006 14:44

you win some you lose some. i know its a PITA, if you look on your receipt they'll be some numbers and a name of whio served you. ohone again, and ask them to check with the cashier.

but they a multi million pound company - if they had packers this probably would haven't have happened.

9 pounds worth of vouchers would hardly hurt them would it?

And, I bet they would discover some cctv footage if the guy behind me was nicking money from them.

OP posts:
littlemissbossy · 23/01/2006 14:49

I don't think it's Tesco's fault but I still think they could reimburse you in some way - vouchers are probably best. The customers always right remember
Go for it unicorn!

Was it full of grapes?

unicorn · 23/01/2006 15:33

but surely customer 'care' doesn't just end when they get the money off you?

Somebody stole something from me - on their premises- I'm not saying Tesco did anything wrong per se (but I repeat it probably wouldn't have happened if there had been a packer)

It happened to be a shopping bag, if I had been mugged at the till I am pretty sure they would do something about it - to ensure the person who stole it was caught(and preserve their customer relations)

Equally if someone stole from them they would follow it up, so why the lack of interest in following up a theft that I have reported to them?

I s'pose I could report it to the police.

It is theft.
