Someone just nicked one of my bags of shopping at Tesco

I was distracted because my pin was wrong (chip and pin)so must have forgotten to pack one of my bags in the trolley.
Well it seems like the guy behind must have thought it was his birthday, as I just called the store, and no it isn't at the checkout.

I know it is my fault - but would you take someones groceries if they left them behind - I wouldn't.

I'm sure if someone had forcibly taken your shopping from you at the till they would have done something too! But you forgot it, someone picked it up - hardly the same thing as being mugged!

unicorn · 23/01/2006 15:37

still theft.
surely still wrong?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 23/01/2006 15:56

Sorry, I wouldn't say it was stolen. I lost a bag with some new tops and a pair of gloves in it recently - put it down in a shop and missed picking it up with my other bags. I see it as my fault and sheer bad luck that despite retracing my steps and contacting the stores later it didn't turn up.

Anyone could have picked up the bag - maybe someone saw it, picked it up and tried to follow you. Maybe it did subsequently get handed in or tracked after you'd called, maybe the guy behind you did wander off with it by mistake... I don't think the police are going to be interested though.

compo · 23/01/2006 15:56

they could have picked it up by mistake with their shopping couldn't they?

sparklymieow · 23/01/2006 15:58

maybe he picked it up by mistake, I have taking Misdee's bags home, because she has been on the till before me, left it there, and I have picked it up with my shopping.

unicorn · 23/01/2006 16:02

but the thing is there is cctv cameras everywhere these days and my point is that they would make more effort if the theft was from them IYSWIM.

If it has not been found at the tillpoint - where I left it- surely that means it has been taken/ stolen?

omg, cant belive that, mind you i worked at pottery shop couple years ago people change the price tickets around and try to pay less. some people just try every opportunity
can the food go over his throat

starlover · 23/01/2006 16:27

have to agree, it isn't tesco's fault!

you really don't even know if the man took it on purpose! imagine the same happened to you, you got all your shopping home and realised that you had an extra bag... ooop[s... would you call the store? would you take it back? i bet most people wouldn't bother.

i had my handbag stolen in sainsburys... off my trolley. containing my purse, phone etc etc

but i dind't blame sainsburys for it!

oh dear, poor you and I'm sure you're cross with yourself as much as anything else.

Normally the till person checks if the bags are all gone from the end of the till but it's perfectly possible (if it's busy) not to notice one bag.

Have to say, rather , that I have taken a bag of someone's shopping (by accident) before. When I got home, I wondered why someone had put mysterious items in my shopping trolley rather than thinking I picked up someone else's bag. My head is normally up in the clouds when I'm shopping (I hate shopping so I switch off). I have also had a bag of shopping taken while loading the car (at Ikea) but there's nothing that can be done sadly.

Flossam · 23/01/2006 17:37

If your purse was stolen in tescos would you expect them to compensate you? I wouldn't. Think this is much the same thing, sorry Unicorn. I know it is annoying.

unicorn · 23/01/2006 17:48

I have not said it is Tesco's fault!!!!!! (see op)

However they do have leeway for customer relations... dh was overcharged pre xmas for some beer..he didn't realise until he got home,he called the store and they refunded him.

Now - if he was dishonest he could have just lied about the beer (ie actually bought 2 x cases, and claimed he hadn't) - there was no way of checking.

Tesco has plenty of money - I think a goodwill gesture for someone who has had something stolen isn't asking too much.

I'm sured he just put it inwith his shopping inadvertantly
blokes don't normally notice things like that - got home and realized and couldnt' be bothhered to go back. but nicked on purpose? don't hink so
but poor you I'd be cross at well

unicorn · 23/01/2006 18:10

I'm afraid I don't believe it was a mistake...
the guy didn't have much, he had to pack his stuff himself - he witnessed me being flustered over the chip and pin business and spotted the wine no doubt.
he nicked it.

OP posts:
hana · 23/01/2006 18:12

aha
not a nice guy then

WigWamBam · 23/01/2006 18:13

But you left the shopping behind - it wasn't Tesco's fault that you did that. It's frustrating and annoying that someone else has picked up your shopping, whether deliberately or not - but it's you (not Tesco, not any other shopper) who are responsible for what you do with your bags once they are through the checkout.

Ultimately, don't we all have to take some responsibility for our own actions, rather than expecting someone else to take it for us?

gomez · 23/01/2006 18:13

Maybe he didn't, maybe the next person along picked it up.. If he only had a small amount stuck it all in one bag and off he went, then along comes a full trolly, with 3 kids rush, rush rush - home with an extra bag. Viola.

You don't really know exactly what happened Unicorn except that you left a bag behind - it is a bit harsh to blame anyone else or expect a goodwill gesture from Tesco. Sorry!

You never know they might surprise you thou'.

Flossam · 23/01/2006 18:36

Also anyone else find that the ends of the tills get so cluttered with shopping bags, leaflets etc, would it really be that hard not to notice a bag left behind?

starlover · 23/01/2006 18:39

maybe he had a load of shopping... packed it all into bags and then put it all into trolley... wouldn't be difficult to pick up an extra one by mistake.

do you count your bags each time? i don;t

And to be realistic, is isn't tescos that will compensate, is it? They will pass the charge on to their customers. They will not take a cut in profets, will they? They will just pass costs like this on to the poor flipping customers.

AngelaD · 25/01/2006 21:54

compensation culture gone mad, i ran over dd's bike last week, BMW have plenty of money should i email them and ask for a new bike, customer care after all

unicorn · 25/01/2006 22:17

Sorry all you Tesco employees and shareholders!, but I still think they do have a responsibility to their customers (they aren't exactly giving the food away after all are they?)

A bag packer - which is fairly normal in the service culture of the States is made out as some great, charitable extra here!
Why?

As I repeat I am not blaming them for my loss but they could have had things in situ which would probably have prevented such an occurence.

OP posts:
deenewyearward · 25/01/2006 22:26

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons as it were, when I lived in Edinburgh, years ago Safeways has this system that the trolley you took round the store wasn't the one you left with and your shopping was placed in the trolley after the till. (you weren't trusted in other words! Anyway I got home to find I had an extra bag with strange items in it, things I wouldn't have bought, it must have been in the second trolley when my bags were placed in it.

Anyway long story getting to the point, that if I shop with dh, one loads the conveyor and one packs, I now if a bag was sitting at the end waiting to go into trolley dh would be on automatic pilot and put it in our trolley
