Gosh - how strange!

Did your mother move out in 2000/2001?

We put in a rubbish bid fully expecting them to come back and tell us that others were in the bidding. We checked a week later and hte property had been sold

We think that they would have got more for it had they brought those interested into the bidding!

It was a lovely house!

soapbox · 23/01/2006 00:54

Gosh - realised that sounds bad

I meant that the estate agents not your parents should have opened it up a bit more!!!

georginars · 23/01/2006 08:55

hah! yes that was my parents. That's very weird that the estate agents did that - think they sold very near to the asking price though in the end. But then estate agents are a law unto themselves.
The people who bought it totally redid it (they must have spent a fortune) and took away all the character IMO (we know this as their kids went to school with my nieces, and then they moved to Dubai or somewhere and advertised it for rent with a full tour on a website).
If you thought it was a bit tired when we sold it, you should have seen it when we bought in in 1976. A total Hammer House of horrors, with a bath full of shoes, random sheds in the garden, holes in the roof and a large storage tank in the middle of the dining room.
How extraordinarily spooky. I hope you found a nice house in the end!

georgina, then your friend will have known Gail Exon and Caroline Williams
this is spooky-ooky but rather nice.
New vicar thinks even fidgety toddlers should be able to sit through very high parish mass. Fr Burgin had what it took to make it go with a swing, new guy doesn't. Ds was starting to hate church when we finally switched, despite missing lots of nice families.
Fr Burgin's idea of "marriage preparation": If you are five minutes late Marina, one hymn goes. If you are over 15 mins late, ALL of them do. Ah, I do miss him
My cousin-in-law still has a nice house in St Joseph's Vale...
nooka, a good pal of mine is the Librarian at BHSG!

georginars · 23/01/2006 09:39

it is nice isn't it! Yes, in fact I've met Gail and Caroline, it was my friend Caroline's first job out of her PGCE and she went to All Saints herself. I used to to go to things at the school such as quiz nights

You made me laugh with Fr Burgin there. Dick's marriage preparation classes consisted of him saying 'well, it's nicer to be married really' which I suppose is true!

All Saints is pretty smells and bells, it's a shame expecting kids to sit through it. However my eldest niece loves waving the incense around! But I haven't heard any enthusiastic reports of the new guy at all.

I had mine here (as did BK!) It was very beautiful

dinny, in recompense for hijacking your thread rather (apologies ) I have asked a friend who organises a lot of smart events in the City to come up with his top/preferred venues.
His no 1 overall for both atmosphere and service is Tower Bridge, he says they are fantastic.
He also rates, as entertainment venues, HQS Wellington, the Middle Temple, Ironmongers Hall and the City of London Club.
He is pretty sure Tower Bridge is licensed for weddings, and all the Livery Halls are. Not totally certain Temple and the Club are.

I should have said he is massively fussy and never forgets a cock-up so his list of Alpha Venues in the Square Mile is not a long one

agree that cannizaro house hotel is fab especially in the summer when you can have a terrace to yourself and access to cannizaro park. we just had dd's christening there and it was fabulous. there was a wedding there the day before. depends on number of guests tho. a friend had to use the richmond venue mentioned here cos CH could not accommodate enough people in one room. the room we used had a capacity of 60 and access to terrace (but too cold!)

Been to lovely weddings at Syon Park (not v central but lovely), the Zoo (outdoor ceremony in a garden there, with monkeys swinging out of the corner of our eyes, drinks in the aquarium bit, then reception in a nice room there. Loos a bit institutional tho'), and the Queen's House - one of the old naval buildigns in Greenwich. Wedding itself was in a church up the hill and across the park, and we all walked across the park to the reception - lovely.
