Stupid cow at toddler ^church^ this afternoon........

or am I just tired and over reacting.

As you'll know my boys are Tafara (Taf/Taffy for short) and Tongai - both Zimbabwean names, and names I'm very proud of as I feel it 'embodies' (if that's the right word??) their Zimbabwean heritage.

At Toddler Church today (we have a little 'service' in the church, and then go to the hall for biscuits, squash and play) the following conversation happened. Not sure whether I'm tired and oversensitive (I was working last night) or whether she was bang out of order.

ME TO DS2: "Taffy, sorry Tongai" (always getting their names mixed up )

WOMAN WHO'S ONLY BEENN A FEW TIMES BEFORE: "Hahahaha, Taffy is he Welsh"

ME: "No that's his brother's name, short for Tafara, a Zimbabwean name"

HER: "Oh no, hahahaha, all Taffy's are Welsh, and that's a funny name"

ME: "I know it's a common term for the Welsh but it's a common shortening for his name in Zimbabwe"

HER: "All Welsh are Taffy's too" (bear in mind she doesn't know me well - and my name is Gwen a Welsh name - but not a drop of Welsh in me.....)

ME: "Well in this instance he's definitely not Welsh and neither is his brother"

HER (Muttering as she walks off): "Must be Welsh, they're all Taffy's"

I had a pretty cr*p sleep this morning, and so wasn't feeling great when I woke up, but she really upset me.

  1. What bl**dy right does she have to laugh at my children's names?? I often find some names of children amusing - but I don't sodding laugh at them.

  2. Isn't saying "all Taffy's are Welsh" - rather racist (not sure I mean that but you know what I mean - stereotypical), and what if (given that my name is a Welsh name) I was Welsh - does she not think I may have taken offence

  3. People have commented on Taffy/Welsh before - but NEVER in the way that she did it, so before it's never bothered me.

It's put me in a really bad mood now, and I'm not sure whether I ought to kick myself out of it (because I'm overreacting to her comments) or whether I've got a "right" to be annoyed.

Truthful answers please

god forbid she doesn't but the bread wonky as well

she's a bint, a cloth-eared bint, don't worry about it

Trophywife · 19/01/2006 15:46

you have every right to be upset.
nobody should laugh at someones name esp not infront of mother/person. infact its quite rude.
what Taffy ment to be short for with the welsh, cause ive never heard of it before.

anyway i think your boys have lovely names. very unsuall but lovely.

Katemum · 19/01/2006 15:48

You have a right to be annoyed.
Just as an aside, Suzywong I have no idea what the first half of your post meant, is it just me being a bit slow?

Trophywife · 19/01/2006 15:49

not just me then , i couldnt understand it..

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/01/2006 15:50

She was rude for sure, but i personally wouldnt be too upset about it if someone said it about mine.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2006 15:50

Oh, clearly the woman's a loon. Don't let it bother you.

Somanykiddies · 19/01/2006 15:51

Stupid woman, how dare she laugh and your children's names. Totally unacceptable imo she should be booted out of toddler group for that!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 16:03

It just wasn't what I needed, what was effectively "first thing" in the morning for me (got in at 7.30am went to bed at 8, got up to go take DS2 out to the group at 1.45 - this comment said to me at 2.20...

Just can't seem to get any motivation to do anything now, and still feeling miserable and p*ssed off

advocateofthedevil · 19/01/2006 16:05

Don't worry about it. Her name was probably something like Chastity Shagsalot anyway so she can hardly comment.

JonesTheSteam · 19/01/2006 16:10

She's clearly a silly cow, if you ask me!!!!

And as someone who is Welsh, I feel pissed off about the Taffy/Welsh thing and I wasn't even there!!

And as someone with an unusual name (even in Wales!), I've put up with years of being called silly things by ignorant people, so I don't think you're overeacting at all.

I'd just try and forget about the stupid woman - you're children's names are beautiful!!!

mazzystar · 19/01/2006 16:17

oh hrh, don't stew about it.

she's obviously batty

rise above

CountessDracula · 19/01/2006 16:19

She sounds spectacularly dim, ignore her

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 19/01/2006 16:20
Lio · 19/01/2006 16:21

What a silly billy (her not you). Love your ds's names btw.

meggmoo · 19/01/2006 16:23

I think her behaviour was terriby rude actually.

Caligula · 19/01/2006 16:25

She was probably trying to make small talk, and didn't really know how to go about it.

georginars · 19/01/2006 16:26

stupid AND rude, what a terrible combination
The names are lovely HRH!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 16:28

If it was any of the other groups I occasionaly attend I wouldn't go again (as I think she's going to be a regular now - friends of another mum at the group). But I've been going to that group almost every single week since August 2002 - so nearly 4yrs ! I play the piano for them most weeks, and DS2 doesn't start nursery until 2007 - so almost another 2yrs left of going (unless I persaude DH to have another - then I might make it a bit longer LOL) and apart from this stupid cow, they're all really lovely people - one of those rare groups where 'newbies' are welcomed with opened arms, and everyone (apart from her is really friendly(

OP posts:
ssd · 19/01/2006 16:28

she probably didn't mean to come across as rude.

I think when we're tired everything sounds wrong, I could fight with my shadow when I'm tired!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/01/2006 16:31

Put it down to first day nerves and see how she is next time.

georginars · 19/01/2006 16:32

it might have been nerves making her jabber, but she kept on going - I don't know, maybe give her one more chance and then if she's rude again you'll know that she is stupid

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 16:32

It wasn't first day nerves - she's been a couple of times before.

And IMO comments about "all Welsh being Taffy's" are not on whether you've been there forever, or it's your first visit.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/01/2006 16:41

Have her barred then.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 16:43

Not sure it's very "Christian" to bar someone from your Church toddler group .

Hopefully by next week I'll have "cooled off" a bit and will actually be able to sit and enjoy the company of my other friends.

The people that run it are all wonderful, they know (and love) DS2 from church so all I have to do is sit down with my cup of tea and relax - they "take over" and play with him (they want to - it's not just me being lazy LOL) and I get to unwind for an hour.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/01/2006 16:47

Well then do the "Christian" thing and forgive, or give the benefit of the doubt or whatever it is

Either way, she's not worth stressing over!
