Stupid cow at toddler ^church^ this afternoon........

or am I just tired and over reacting.

As you'll know my boys are Tafara (Taf/Taffy for short) and Tongai - both Zimbabwean names, and names I'm very proud of as I feel it 'embodies' (if that's the right word??) their Zimbabwean heritage.

At Toddler Church today (we have a little 'service' in the church, and then go to the hall for biscuits, squash and play) the following conversation happened. Not sure whether I'm tired and oversensitive (I was working last night) or whether she was bang out of order.

ME TO DS2: "Taffy, sorry Tongai" (always getting their names mixed up )

WOMAN WHO'S ONLY BEENN A FEW TIMES BEFORE: "Hahahaha, Taffy is he Welsh"

ME: "No that's his brother's name, short for Tafara, a Zimbabwean name"

HER: "Oh no, hahahaha, all Taffy's are Welsh, and that's a funny name"

ME: "I know it's a common term for the Welsh but it's a common shortening for his name in Zimbabwe"

HER: "All Welsh are Taffy's too" (bear in mind she doesn't know me well - and my name is Gwen a Welsh name - but not a drop of Welsh in me.....)

ME: "Well in this instance he's definitely not Welsh and neither is his brother"

HER (Muttering as she walks off): "Must be Welsh, they're all Taffy's"

I had a pretty cr*p sleep this morning, and so wasn't feeling great when I woke up, but she really upset me.

  1. What bl**dy right does she have to laugh at my children's names?? I often find some names of children amusing - but I don't sodding laugh at them.

  2. Isn't saying "all Taffy's are Welsh" - rather racist (not sure I mean that but you know what I mean - stereotypical), and what if (given that my name is a Welsh name) I was Welsh - does she not think I may have taken offence

  3. People have commented on Taffy/Welsh before - but NEVER in the way that she did it, so before it's never bothered me.

It's put me in a really bad mood now, and I'm not sure whether I ought to kick myself out of it (because I'm overreacting to her comments) or whether I've got a "right" to be annoyed.

Truthful answers please

The taffy thing, btw comes from a rhyme that goes,
'Taffy was a Welsh man, Taffy was a thief'

So not very nice for all sorts of reasons HRH

Taffy came to my house and stole a side of beef - lovely

DH is Welsh BTW

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 17:58

She sounds like a loon, I'm afraid. And really, really dim.

apparently sung on St David's day????

song

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 18:03

yes but on the borders of Wales and other parts of England - so a very 'anti' welsh song .

just found this

"Taffy is a sometimes pejorative term for a Welsh person or thing. It may be derived from the Welsh forename "Dafydd" ("David"), or a reference to the River Taff in Cardiff, Wales."

She was very rude. And in your fragile state, it hit deeper than it might have done. Silly woman.

Some people just do not know how to admit they've made a mistake and will go on insisting black is white until the other person gives up. Maybe she's one of those types?

Did anyone else hear/see the conversation? What was their reaction?

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 18:14

no everyone else had already gone down to the hall, she was getting her 2 children ready to go down, and I was sorting some music for choir practice tomorrow night. One of my friends said "you're very quiet, are you ok" - to which I lied (I'm good at that when I'm feeling cr*p) and said "of course I am, just tired"..

Perhaps you might feel better if you shared what she said with the person who asked if you were ok? Not in a "can you believe what that b*tch said to me" but in a "sorry I was short with you the other day (even if you weren't IYSWIM), but I was really upset by a comment made to me". Just a thought.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 18:19

she just assumed I was tired (which I was) and left it at that - I know what's she's like this friend, she'll kick up a huge fuss about it, and I'd rather just try and forget it now........

Talking of forgetting things - I suppose my children may want feeding tonight

Grin
HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 19/01/2006 18:21

in my defence I have at least put the pototoes into boil already (should be about done). It's corned beef hash for dinner - they don't have to have fried eggs with their's, and the rest I can just throw together (and then finish it off properly for when DH gets in later LOL).

She sounds thick as two short planks and slightly unhinged - I would try not to let it bother you.
