Is there a Household stuff topic - there should be. Anyway, what would you put in open shelves either side of your oven?

I have open shelves flanking my oven. Currently they are full of jars and bottles, looking a bit minging and messy. Do you think saucepans would look better? Can't ahve books as they will get greasy.

I think saucepans would look MUCH better. Glass just gets grotty around the oven.

How about plants? That might look cool. Or a small aquarium a la Sophie what's-her-face ginger chef w/her own show?

Enid · 18/01/2006 13:48

storage space a real problem

have no wall mounted cupboards at all and one big larder drawer where all foodstuffs must go. Desperately trying to declutter in mad pregnancy thing.

Have just paid gardener £35 to dig veg patches and do garden beds. Dh will be furious

pans, def as they will get used and washed often, anythign else runs the risk of hanging around getting greasy doesn't it?

LIZS · 18/01/2006 13:52

Pans and casseroles, preferably coloured !

moondog · 18/01/2006 13:53

Pans ok.
Why not have little glass doors made? Will sove your grease problems.

Enid · 18/01/2006 13:53

my pans are boring though

moony the whole kitchen is getting redone next year so will wait. Until then it is damage limitation.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2006 13:55

Make sure the shelves are sturdy enough to take the weight, Enid! Le Creu is heavy stuff.

MrsBadger · 18/01/2006 13:56

Saucepans may look better but I go nuts if I have to open a cupboard every time I want the salt, pepper, oil, ketchup, vinegar etc, so keep this type of stuff on open shelves.
Jars of frequently-used utensils?
Put doors on them to hide the mess?

Enid · 18/01/2006 13:57

think they will

will clear them out and repaint them this arvo

dh will be tightlipped as he has strange hatred of me doing anything DIY ish

Enid · 18/01/2006 13:58

Makes no difference really as if you have pans there they will get greasy too.
I put big jars (the big hinged glass ones) with dry stores such as lentils/pasta/rice etc.

When I clean the the worktops then the jars get a bit of a once over too. No probs.

OOOh BTW (Hijack) I saw some great yellow trainer for you Enid, really funky - in CLARKS!

moondog · 18/01/2006 13:59

lol at tightlipped dh!
How about leaving as they are,but putting up little curtains then?
Or....decant everyday stuff into plain bottles.

My inner Martha is rearing her ugly head.

meggmoo · 18/01/2006 14:00

Expat is right about LC pans. We bought a set and managed to wreck both all our shelves in the space of three weeks.

My kitchen is a hole!

Enid · 18/01/2006 14:00

I need to move something from a cupboard to the space so I can put bottles in a cupboard

yes could do checked curtains but they will get MINGING

Enid · 18/01/2006 14:03

moondog · 18/01/2006 14:07

Great thanks (sorry 'bout this Enid-haven's seen np in a while) bar Goosy hell!

Still in Britain-dh gone back to bird flu central with ^strict6 orders to stay desk bound and not visit any villages.)

Glad business is going well for you.

meggmoo · 18/01/2006 14:07

Well, what you could do is have a hem at the top and have some eyelets put in for you. Yes it would hang rather nicely in a foldy/pleaty type way.
You can get some really great Cath Kidston oilcloths. Actually there are so many really nice designs ATM.

moondog · 18/01/2006 14:08

Enid,you lazy cow!
It's not going to be too taxing to wash tiny curtains once mingery commences!

nailpolish · 18/01/2006 14:11

glad youre fine, need to get back to it, was just taking a teabreak before i tackled an enormous lulu guinness kingsize duvet cover (my customers are posh)

i have been thinking about you and the birdflu - i had suspicions it was near you

please be careful!

WideWebWitch · 18/01/2006 14:14

enid, post a pic. Only on mumsnet could this discussion be so hotly debated! Oilcloth will hang but stiffly, it's like caff tablecloth stuff
