Absolutely no txt slang in Scrabble, my Grandad would turn in his grave.

Norma · 15/11/2003 23:06

No, you're a winner, but the freedom of self expression means that the rules are there to be bent sometimes. For theatrical effect only.

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:08

but the sub-heading fo her book is..."The zero tolerance apporach to punctuation"!!!

OP posts:
popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:08

I did a proofreading course recently which asserted that the use of commas is declining all the time. I just deleted one from that sentence, in fear of looking like a hypocrite! Apparently, what is correct or incorrect changes all the the time.

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:12

I know!
But when she is writing a book slagging off bad punctuation and what she is saying is written as 'law' then it just annoys me a little
as you have prbably gathered.
Incidently, the section on apostrophes was excellent!

I haven't read a book for ages!

Tinker · 15/11/2003 23:14

Well, I thought you could, pretty much, use commas where you liked, as long as you didn't change the meaning of the sentence. They are the equivalent of taking a breath in speech. I'm going to be wrong aren't I?

I like commas

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:14

buy it - cheap on amazon at the moment

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:16

Apparently, the origins of commas were for actors so that they would know when a big long speech was coming up and could gee themselves up with there breathing

OP posts:
Janstar · 15/11/2003 23:19

Well, I agree, with you, Tinker, commas, are great, aren't they??

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:20

,yes,they,are,aren't,they,?,

Well, folks! I am off to bed. Going to read a bit more of this book. Will try my hardest not to annotate it as I go along!
Further feedback tomorrow!

Bloody wonderful. You simply don't find the same flexibility in other languages.

Norma · 15/11/2003 23:22

Nite nite.

Tinker · 15/11/2003 23:22

I, hope, that, you're, not, taking, the pi%

Janstar · 15/11/2003 23:31

Wow, I am impressed with Popsycal. After one or two sherbets, end of a hard week, heated technical discussion on mumsnet, she goes to bed at 11.30 to read and annotate a technical book on a dry subject.

Don't you fancy your husband then? (joking)

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:37

husband is out (again.....)
the book is a light hearted one actually!
i am just making it much more technical than it is...
still here btw .....christmas shoppimg

OP posts:
Norma · 15/11/2003 23:38

That could be the start of a new thread:
"Do you still fancy your husband?"
Yeah, absolutely, fancy the pants off him.
Night night from Norma as she stumbles to the bedroom ...

popsycal · 15/11/2003 23:41

ps....i am not really a control freak. no honest i am not
just have some peculiar pet peeves -
i will talk about cranberries, wet shower curtains and powdered soup being drunk from a cup tomorrow evening!
see you all soon ladies

Hey, Popsycal.

Just have to be careful when making a jokey remark like that. I don't know your circumstances, and maybe you didn't have a dh for all I knew. Have to take care as could upset someone badly on mumsnet like that.

If you like such books, have you read, 'How to Annoy Beaurocrats' by R T Fishall? Highly recommend.

popsycal · 16/11/2003 11:41

Janstar.....did I upset you!?!?
What did I say?
Maybe I typed something with a tone that I didn't intend?!
Just re-read the thread............
Can't find what you are referring to in your last post.....
or have i totally got my wires crossed?!
i feel bad now.....

OP posts:
popsycal · 16/11/2003 11:44

should i go and change my nickname.......
