She needs to get onto the council to move her. She needs to fill in a transfer/exchange form.

Freckle · 15/01/2006 21:21

I think you need to check with your own local authority as they all have slightly different rules. Generally though it is when a child reaches the age of 10 - although this has been taken to mean when the youngest child reaches 10.

kid · 15/01/2006 21:22

We were told that ideally, brothers and sisters shouldn't be sharing a room once the eldest reaches 10. We were also told that as there was such a shortage of properties, we wouldn't get a 3 bedroom as there were other people a lot worse off than us.

I think the best thing to do is apply for a mutual exchange. We were told this would be our only chance.

mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:23

sorry maybe I'm not asking this proparly I know ther is an age that different sexes can have seperate rooms does anyone know the age?

OP posts:
mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:24

she's private renting anyway so she could just look for a larger property herself but it was for her housing benefit

OP posts:
Freckle · 15/01/2006 21:25

I do not believe there is a legal age, i.e. an age set down in statute. It is down to each local authority to set their own rules.

Beetrootfultoyourself · 15/01/2006 21:27

whoops sorry [hamgs head shame] NO idea!

mumfor1sttime · 15/01/2006 21:28

mummygow - is she renting private or council?? Im confused now! If she is renting privately, she will have to move herself!

You can still claim housing benefit for private renting. Get the form from local councils to put in a claim.

mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:31

I didnt ask about her moving I was asking did anyone know the age for different sexes having different room.

She private rents but is paid through housing benefit therefor the rules still apply to her because if her dd was not the required age they would not pay for a 3 but only a 2.

asaik, if she has different sex children, she would be entitled to a bedroom for each of them.

mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:34

starlover I wasnt being cheeky I know that kid and freckle helped me with the answere I just thought I wasnt explaining myself proparly to other on the thread, sorry if I offended you in some way

Freckle · 15/01/2006 21:38

Your friend really needs to check with her own local authority. And if they say the age is 10, make sure she checks whether it is the age of the elder/eldest child or of the younger/youngest.

mumfor1sttime · 15/01/2006 21:39

Sorry mummygow, got confused as I thought you said that she was in council housing at start of thread.

It is the Councils responsibility to move tenants into suitable accomodation - they have to. Private landlords dont have to.

The age, I thought was age 10. Not sure if this is both children, one or two children iyswim.

I can only advise her to approach local Council/HA to get onto their housing list for a 3 bed, or to look for a 3 bed property privately. Surely she can still claim Housing benefit whichever size property she is in?

mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:45

thanks everyone yes she will still get housing benefit but I think what happens is that up till a certain age they can share so they will pay for 2 bedrooms but if you did have a 3 bedroom which would obviously have a higher rent they would still only pay for 2 and she would have to pay the rest herself so we just wanted to know if it was worth her while looking at 3 beds yet as her dd is getting to that "private" age

expatinscotland · 15/01/2006 21:48

Our council doesn't care about these same sex sharing a bedroom rules. Well, I'm sure they do, but housing shortages are so acute there are plenty of families in that situation.

It honestly depends on where you're living.

mumfor1sttime · 15/01/2006 21:55

Just checked my Council website-

2 children age 9 or under of same sex

2 children age 4 or under of different sexes

where a boy and girl are required to share and one or both are age 5 plus.

This is their age limits to move people. Im sure they probably dont always stick to it.

mummygow · 15/01/2006 21:59

mumfor1sttime what did you put in your search and maybe I can use the same wording in my search for my council - thanks
