The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the most stupid supposed classic ever made.
Lord of the Ringzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

harpsichordcarrier · 15/01/2006 19:48

*classic
gawd its hard to post when bf

nooka · 15/01/2006 19:48

Another disappointed by Citizen Kane. Only film I have ever walked out of was Natural Born Killers - but I wouldn't describe that as a classic!

harpsichordcarrier · 15/01/2006 19:49

oh alright then...
Battleship Potemkin
bloody terrible
snoooooooooooooooooze

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 19:52

Is Les Enfants du Paradis that one by ... damnit ... the guys who did Delicatessen? (If so, I loved it.)

I'm being a wee bit sarcastic about Citizen Kane, I do see its value, but all the stuff that was so cool and funky when they made it is commonplace now. It's a bit like reading Aristotle, iyswim.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 19:53

Orson Welles is weird for me. I know a guy back home who looks exactly like him (so much so that he played him in that old Peter Jackson film!). Yet (young) Orson Welles is sexy. And that guy back hom is totally not.

Meanoldmummy · 15/01/2006 19:54

NQC you might mean City of Lost Children....one of the best films ever IMHO

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 19:56

You're right, Cite des Enfants Perdus.

Ron Perlman is really good in that. Also, the dwarves.

Meanoldmummy · 15/01/2006 19:58

I like l'Octopus...the scary demented old siamese twins. And the dream sequence near the end...brilliant!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 19:58

Oh, answering the original question more relevantly. I really don't tend to like any film from before about 1980 I think. I can't think of anything from before then that I can be bothered with.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 19:59

l'Octopus? Is that by them too?

One of them did the fourth Alien movie, I think it was ... the one with Winona Ryder. And a midget! Which was good, kinda.

Moulin Rouge is rubbish. Blade Runner hmmmm

Mercy · 15/01/2006 20:10

Belle de Jour adn various other French films

saadia · 15/01/2006 20:19

I don't like Gone With the Wind - just don't get what all the fuss is all about. The characters are just not likeable or even engaging in any way.

harpsichordcarrier · 15/01/2006 20:20

oh god just remembered another one
The Bicycle Thieves

georginars · 15/01/2006 20:20

Citizen Kane - really dull
Don't get Tarantino films at all
Don't get the Producers - yes, Springtime for Hitler is a great gag but it's the only one in the whole film

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 20:21

Oh, hc, but the Icicle Thieves is quite good, and probably better if you've seen the Bicycle Thieves first?

harpsichordcarrier · 15/01/2006 20:23

well I have TECHNICALLY seen the Bicycle Thieves
I mean I was sitting in the cinema and everything
but, possibly, my eyes may have closed for a few seconds....
what's the Icicle Thieves?

NotQuiteCockney · 15/01/2006 20:24

It's an Italian funny film about someone who steals a chandelier. Lots of poverty, and mostly in black and white, but it's airing on tv, so some people drift in from the commercials.

By a guy who looks a lot like Roberto Benini, but isn't.

georginars · 15/01/2006 20:26

oh I don't really get the Godfather films either.

georginars · 15/01/2006 20:27

or the Shawshank Redemption. I must be a bit of a pleb
