What stands out as an important thing that happened in the 1990's?

School project for goddaughter - we can't think of anything memorable (inventions, big news, fashion and style etc)from the 1990s. We've managed the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's but are strugglnig with the 90's.

So.....ideas please.
