if a friend was claiming benifits and their partner was working on the side, and yet she is still claiming full benifits? Also if you knew that she was applying to chartities for items for her disabled child when you know that if they declared the earnings that they wouldn't be allowed to apply?

and I know she is, before anyone shouts at me, I have told her time and time again to declare he is working.

Frankly, I would mind my own business. Is he earning a fortune, do you know?

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:06

unsure of the amount, I have told her for months to declare it, purely because I am worried that if they got found out her daughter would suffer.

I believe there is a number to call to 'shop' someone anonymously and yes I probably would do it.

spacedonkey · 13/01/2006 18:09

but as a friend of theirs, do they have a lifestyle which seems to suggest they're doing well out of this?

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:10

they go aboard a few times a year

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:11

but I wouldn't shop them myself, I couldn't do that to her daughter, she needs her IYKWIM, I am worried that someone might and then her daughter will suffer.

Difficult situation. But they're aware of the risks involved, and are prepared to run them - there's nothing more you can do!

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:15

I just keep telling her to stop with the benifits, 2 year ago, she said she would stop when she cleared her debt, but she didn't.

leave 'em to it.

the truth will out

misdee · 13/01/2006 18:16

thing is, its not just a few quid, they are getting housing benefit, council tax paid as well.

MrsSpoon · 13/01/2006 18:21

Well true, I can understand that you don't want to do it yourself, difficult when it is a friend but the longer it goes on the worse the consequences. TBH it infuriates me to hear that they go abroad a few times a year as there are plenty of people working and abiding by the law, ie not claiming benefits that they are not entitled to, who can't afford to go abroad once a year! Makes me mad!

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:23

I am on benifits myslef and I can't afford to go abroad!!

also its bugging me about the applying to chartities when they wouldn't be entitled to help if they declared the earnings, I know that the chartity only pay out if you are on a low income or on benifits (I have used them myself, but wasn't entitled to help when DH was working and earing 15,000)

MrsSpoon · 13/01/2006 18:27

The charities bit is infuriating too. Sorry to be totally blunt but they are taking away money from people who really need it and that makes me both and .

Blondeinlondon · 13/01/2006 18:28

Our taxes are paying for those benefits
I would shop them

its annoying me, you can only apply to this chartity once a year, I applied in May, she applied in sept. and then on monday she said that she had applied again, because her tumble dryer had packed up, when i questioned it, she said they pay out in an emergancy!! yet when i phoned the chartity about our moving into a suitable house, they said they wouldn't help us.

LIZS · 13/01/2006 18:30

hmm , it is a slippery slope isn't it. She's got so sued to the inflated income that she has even lost sight of her original self-justification and imho has become greedy. The charity issue would really bug me in your shoes, as even if she is now discovered they are unlikely to get back what they have inadvertently paid out. At least the State would have some redress were they to investigate and uncover her fraud.

misdee · 13/01/2006 18:30

she can afford a tumble dryer![amgry]

sparklymieow · 13/01/2006 18:31

and we are on full benifits and none of us work on the side.

OP posts:
saadia · 13/01/2006 18:32

This would upset me too but if you reported her, do you think she might guess that it was you as you have already advised against claiming?

Is she a good friend of your?
