People who have moved to the country from London

What exactly is so much cheaper about living in the country to justify the massive salary cut you have to take when you move?

Food, clothes, schools etc the same price surely. Plus masses of petrol so that is more. If you are moving to an area where the house prices are not dissimilar to London, I can't see where you make the saving.

well is it worth a 25% pay cut to live in the country???

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:19

Is the work much chiller?

CD, as you may remember from other thread last time you looked at moving, my parents and siblings live in Winchester and I was brought up there (before I escaped to live in London, land of endless coffee shops, cheap local restaurants, multi-ethnic living, grime and f*ing unreliable transport) .

FACT 1: house prices are cheaper than London, but still pretty pricy, particularly in some "brackets" - notably people moving out of London with small children. M&D are looking at moving and had some particulars which I was looking at at the weekend and I was sort of - but not very - surprised at prices (I know an excellent Victorian/Edwardian detached house in prime location for sale, if you are interested ).

FACT 2: Winchester is not the countryside, therefore arguments re not spilling out money on cappuchino's etc does not hold good. Conversely there are not that many nice places to get cappuchino's.

FACT 3: I believe good childcare, while probably a bit cheaper, is harder to find - not the same market and availability as there is in SW London.

FACT 4: State schools are largely v good there and will be your major saving (I was entertained that the one I went to was listed prominently on particulars of houses for catchment area purposes). Don't know how old your children are, but my mother (retired teacher in local state school) said some were getting horrendously difficult to get in to, so you really need to do some due diligence before moving down there re whether you actually will be able to get your children in.

Will you be near a Waitrose CD? You know you won't survive without .

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:24

ooh yes Anchovy would love the details!

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:24

There's one about 6 miles away

OP posts:
Anchovy · 13/01/2006 15:25

OH - FACT 5: the nearest Waitrose is in Chandlers Ford which is not close enough for comfort.

they MUST open one in Winch soon!

Must say last time I went down there and went into town I was very pleasantly surprised - it was rather like Richmond, nice independent shops, nice cafes etc

I am way behind on this thread but just want to say there is an excellent cheese shop in Horsham, next time you find yourself in Sussexc and chhese-less.

Of course you were bored in someone else's house! If you move, you will develop your own life!

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 15:56

Anchovy, how old are you? I grew up in Winchester too and my M&D still live there, in a prime location too. We might know each other?

Mercy · 13/01/2006 15:59

Have you always lived in London Countess?

Maybe you should write a list of all the things you don't like about London to try and persuade yourself as well as teh good things about living in the country.

Anchovy · 13/01/2006 16:02

Lonelymum - don't make me say it. Oh alright, I'm 41.

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 16:04

Eek me too!

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 16:04

I wonder if we know each other?

Anchovy · 13/01/2006 16:07

CAT me to find out!

CD knew my brother because I have an unusual surname.

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 16:07

NO I grew up in......Winchester!!

(hence my reluctance to move there )

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 16:10

I like everything about London!

It's dh who wants to go

I have a billion and one threads on this, he has tried to get me to move for years

OP posts:
Mercy · 13/01/2006 16:11

lol!

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 16:16

So I think the answer is that we will be poorer tbh

I will do it as I know dh wants to so much. I just hope I don't end up suicidal as a result

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 16:16

Anchovy, I have sent you a CAT.
