What exactly is so much cheaper about living in the country to justify the massive salary cut you have to take when you move?

Food, clothes, schools etc the same price surely. Plus masses of petrol so that is more. If you are moving to an area where the house prices are not dissimilar to London, I can't see where you make the saving.

No not winchester it was the PILs in sussex. I swear there was no decent cheese shop for 25 miles it was confirmed by many people

JoolsToo · 13/01/2006 15:06

CD you have to buy long life milk in the country!

I'll bet you drove past a few garages selling milk to get to that shop!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:07

Oh, well, SUSSEX.... pshaw

Get thee west, MUCH more civilised.

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:07

Where will we keep this chest freezer in our rabbit hutch that we will just about be able to afford as dh is suddenly on a trainee's salary

I will commute

I only work 4 days a week, can do at least one from home.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:07

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:08

Anyway, all of this very nice but off topic

I need to know how we are going to save cash to make up for impoverished dh

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:08

Email me budget and location and I shall find you a house to rent. With room for a chest freezer.

JoolsToo · 13/01/2006 15:09

if you're 'pro' you look for the positives
if you're 'anti' you look for the negatives

where there's a will there's a way - nuff said!

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:09

Oh I have found a great one to rent, renting is for nowt

Massive 6/7 bed jobbie with tons of space

But when you come to buy....

PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:09

bollox, garages don't close until 10, 10.30.
Our local tesco express doesn't close until 10.30! (And I'm horrified to admit that there are THREE of them within 5 miles of here).

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:10

ahem, then why did i run out of petrol driving from Marlborough to Chippenham at 10pm?

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:10

So rent instead...

(or am I being very thick here?)

JoolsToo · 13/01/2006 15:11

cos you're a woman [ducks]

Prufrock · 13/01/2006 15:11

Are you still trying to decide CD?

Cleaner - I pay £45 a week to clean a 6 bed house. Gardener is £10 and hour. We are having work done on the house and I have found decorators (£15/hour) and plumbers/electricians to be slightly cheaper, but also nicer - not thinking that they are doing you a favour by turning up. and everyone knows everyone, so you get personal recomendations of good people for stuff like that.

Food, strangely can be cheaper, simply because you plan to go to the big supermarket or do an online shop rather than relying on an overpriced tesco metro on the way home. And equivalent quality meat is cheaper at farmers markets tahn at waitrose.

Schools - for us a big thing was that primary schools in a country village were good enough for us not to have to pay for private at that level. So huge savings.

Clothes - well, you tend to not be as fashion obsessed out here. Even for office jobs sharp suits are not expected (for women that is). And going out is extremely cheap, simply because there isn't as much of it!

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:11

oh no i couldn#t' live with someone else's decor etc for long

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:11

Because you failed to fill up at the petrol station (Jet I believe) opposite ATC tyres in Marlborough which is open until 11?

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:12

on the basis that I assumed that I would find a petrol station open between the two but of course not

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:12

And if you were hoping to find petrol on the gallops west of Marlborough, you are mad. Bit like looking for it in Richmond park!

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:13

Well how was I meant to know? They are every 4 yards in london!!!

If it was Wales or Scotland or something I could understand

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:13

Lots of horse poo though, you could have done a nifty engine conversion...

no, never mind

CountessDracula · 13/01/2006 15:13

only encounter horse poo at the football currently!

OP posts:
Beetrootfultoyourself · 13/01/2006 15:14

Warsgrave is a nice town

PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 15:15

Just a few tips before you move to the country:

There are no petrol stations on the Marlborough Downs or the Ridgeway (areas of outstanding natural beauty)

There are no petrol stations on Salisbury Plain (tanks on manoevre might accidentally blow them up)

There are no petrol stations at Avebury (all those prehistoric standing stones are in the way, damn them)

Shall I continue???
