People who have moved to the country from London

What exactly is so much cheaper about living in the country to justify the massive salary cut you have to take when you move?

Food, clothes, schools etc the same price surely. Plus masses of petrol so that is more. If you are moving to an area where the house prices are not dissimilar to London, I can't see where you make the saving.

oh no, one of the reasons for him looking down there was that if we move to Winch at least we already have friends there and my parents are there to help out

We have discussed moving to Australia in the past (i have dual nationality) but we decided not to on the basis that none of us likes it much and it is such a bloody long way away! Also dh is only qualified to work in England and Wales

Erm, also sounds like Issymum was in my parent's road: mid Victorian villa downhill walk to Cathedral. Hmmmmmm.

PrincessPeaHead · 16/01/2006 11:53

cd it sounds to me like if you don't do it now you'll be having the same discussion next year. and it is honestly better to give it a go before schools become and issue than it is when you are trying to shoehorn dd back into the Yr1 class of the london school of your choice.

bite the bullet, look on it as an adventure (with a jolly nice country summer attached) and get househunting!

you know it makes sense

Lonelymum · 16/01/2006 11:58

Oh no Anchovy, don't say that!

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:00

oh I lived there for a while!

OK pph have found a house am just off to buy it

it looks a bit gloomy, what do you think?

here it is

Other than it's dismal appearance it ticks the boxes

Lonelymum · 16/01/2006 12:03

Mind you, none of you lived there when I was a chld as my siblings and I were the only chidlren in the road. It was all pensioners then in those days. Funny to think of it swarming with children now...

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:03

\link{http://www.primelocation.com/uk-property-for-sale/details/id/KFWRWS1016582\this would be ideal) as is next door to my parents but sadly out of our budget!

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:03

try again

OP posts:
Lonelymum · 16/01/2006 12:04

Lovely CD, just a couple of million too much though!

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:05

Hang on are we talking about the same place? Isn't St James's villas the one with the railway in the cutting in front of it?

My friend lived there as a kid I'm sure

omg it may be you!

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:05

maybe I could ask my dad to chip in

OP posts:
Issymum · 16/01/2006 12:05

Surely only just out of your budget CD!

Enid · 16/01/2006 12:05

nice house (600 one) cheap too by dorset standards

Lonelymum · 16/01/2006 12:05

No, that is St James Terrace CD.

PrincessPeaHead · 16/01/2006 12:06

first one looks lovely, bloody bargain, and not gloomy at all. OK the render needs painting cream, but it is very pretty really.

second one - nope. could do a lot better with 2.85 than live in a bloody stable block, albeit quite a pretty one...!

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:06

ok if I can have this one then I will move uncomplainingly

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:06

yes pph but as is next door to APs then would be jolly convenient

OP posts:
Enid · 16/01/2006 12:07

no not that one cd

with great power comes great responsibility

Lonelymum · 16/01/2006 12:07

Oh CD only just seen the house in Headbourne Worthy. That isn't too bad is it? Nice garden anyway. Of course it looks gloomy: look at the dirty black cloud in the sky. Someone should have gone back and photographed it in the sunshine.

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:08

I may go and see that first one, it does look pretty good for the cash

Must be on the central reservation of the M3 i reckon

OP posts:
Anchovy · 16/01/2006 12:08

OK, you weren't having lunch with my parents, they live the other side of City Centre (which is in a hollow) - although my brother lives just round the corner from where you were. Shame - you could have reported on how my father's cold is and whether my sister has got her packing done yet for her move to the Gulf States. Bugger. Suspect I will have to phone them myself.

Since when did Winchester become the epi-centre of everything? When I lived there as a child there was literally nothing to do except hang round the Buttercross and drink cider. Ah, the wonders of gentrification!

CountessDracula · 16/01/2006 12:09

Yes I did that too Anchovy!
