Ideas for a 6 year old birthday party

DD has decided she wants to invite her class friends around to the house for her birthday this year. We usually rent a Wacky Warehouse but as we frequent these almost every other weekend she has decided she doesn't want a party there.

Anyone ideas for party games etc as have never even thought about entertaining 15 boisterous children in my home before and the idea of it scares me and would prefer it to be as stress free as poss. DD has said she wants a disco, any idea where we can get some cheap disco lights?

When's her birthday? If during warmer weather then: bouncy castle with hot dogs and icecream to eat (but not whilst bouncing).

If it's soon and you really do want a disco party have a load of games at the ready eg:musical statues, musical bumps. You could try limbo dancing. Goes down a treat. Whenever I've done disco parties that's what happens and 11 year olds like it just as much as the 6 year olds.

Dancing comp also good. If they are driving you mad you tell them (after 3 songs) that that was just the practise and that you would be judging now. That should take another 2 songs and they should be lovely and exhausted. Remember to provide lots of water and/or squash cos they get hot quickly.

We had a party for DD's 6th birthday. She decided she wanted a pyjama party. I was very unsure about this but we did go ahead. They all came in their pyjamas and dressing gowns. First thing we did was a treasure hunt. A friend then did a story thing and had them pretending to be all sorts of things running round the place. We then did a disco, picked up some cheap lights and a bubble machine from somewhere like Maplins. I bunged some hot food in the oven for them to eat on a load of spread out duvets and pillows, followed by ice cream. It would have worked fine apart from a power cut when I was cooking which was one of the more stressful moments. Apart from that it went down pretty well.

Great idea for limbo dancing Marslady, DD said she would love doing that. Thanks. Thanks for the link too have got a few ideas from there.

That sounds fun Kittypickle, we couldn't have a bubble machine as we have wood flooring in the living room where all the action would be. Like the idea of pyjamas though.

DD's party is in 3 weeks time, her birthday is 27th and we are having the party on 28th. She wants to invite every girl in her class am sure they won't all turn up though.

Not sure if they will be kept quiet, DD is quite hyper at the best of times so on her birthday she will probably be running and screaming all over the place, especially with 10 of her little mates in the same room. Am dreading it tbh.

We've just seen some disco lights in Argos, half price £4.49, unfortunately can't do a link, not sure how good they are though.

That site is great MaloryTowers, am thinking about doing the bingo cards, they look fun.

Do you know of any sites where you can make your own invitations, DD wants to make her own rather than buying them.

I'll do a swap.

combining my kids birthdays Saturday, so have 60- yes, 60- 5 and 6 year olds in the local village hall. And all the adults (my bloody family) bar DH and I have dropped out (tho will have the kids parents in the main).

AAHHHHHHHHH

Check out those awful pawn shop vchains for disco lights (DH deals in disco lights you see)

Does anyone have a story-to-act-out they could recommend? Have kits for them to make their own masks and party hats, just need to get the rest sorted.

DP just spent ages making a lovely invitation and our printer is playing up and so won't print it properly and

Will have to go out and buy some now.

OP posts:
PeachyClair · 05/01/2006 20:21

can you save it to disk, get it printed in an asda photo shop and then just attach to the card front?

crazydazy · 05/01/2006 20:32

DP doesn't think it will be compatible as we have a crappy package called Star Office.

OP posts:
PeachyClair · 05/01/2006 20:33

When do you need it by? you could e-mail to me, Ill see what I can save it to (Dh computer type, if anyone can he can!) and throw it back in the post on a disc. Just an offer.

crazydazy · 05/01/2006 20:40

Oh thats really nice of you Peachyclair. DP doesn't think its really worth the effort as he has just made it himself.

he thinks its a bit naff to send in the post and said he would be embarrassed.

Thanks very much anyway

In John Lewis they had creative party packs in the toys department. Found these, and reduced to clear!

We always hired the village hall or even better the local council acticity centre (games hall). The activity centre is great because they include a bouncy castle, hoops and balls. Along with a CD player and a couple of traditional party games its great.

For DD's 6 birthday we took her and 7 friends to Pizza hut for a "make a pizza party". That was great apart from not realising that some kids aren't used to eating out and 4 of them kept trying to run around the whole place and one was very poorly (he arrived this way) his mum left a contact number but 30 mins to return after i decided he really wasn't happy.

Gillian76 · 06/01/2006 00:09

Just seen this thread. Was having a similar discussion with DD yesterday - she will be 6 on Feb 28th.

She wants a "tea party" at home. When we talked about the guest list she wanted to invite nearly all her class. I tried to whittle it down and said what about a few girl-friends? She named about 8 or 9. There are 12 girls in the class, I think so I could hardly leave 3 or 4 out!

Added to her siblings, and 4 girl cousins, that would make 18 . Might have to rethink the plan. Would that be too hellish to have at home?

Skribble · 06/01/2006 01:15

Gillian76 I would get her to pick 2 or 3 at this age they usually have that number or regular playmates. I would aim for no more than 8/9 in total and it should be quite fun.

Crazy Dazy As for diso lights try the reduced novelty christmas section, flashing rope lights are good, just drap around DJ table.

crazydazy · 06/01/2006 10:07

Don't think DD would go with the Christmas lights as we have just took them down and she would just complain that she didn't want them at her party as it would be embarrassing.....they grow up so fast though don't they? Last year it wouldn't have bothered her but she has changed so much this year.

She's really excited about having the party at home, the prospect of 18 little girls plus DS and his mate is filling me with dread. I have asked her just to invite the girls she plays with but it still adds up to around 10 plus 3 cousins and DS and friend. Some of them possibly won't turn up but knowing my luck will invite the whole class and they will all turn up.
