Bearing in mind christmas has just happenned and am concious that the kids will have a pile of new stuff at home and don't want to add to it.

So what would you be happy for your kids to receive if a Jan b'day?

No more than £10 per gift. Cheaper if poss

books. can never have too many.

how old?

Hulababy · 02/01/2006 21:32

Books are always good.
Also other items that need replaces more frequently than average: craft things, colouring books, pens/crayons, etc.

northerner · 02/01/2006 21:40

3 of them are boys who are 4 - friends from ds's preschool. 1 is a the dd of my best friend who will be 8 - will spend more on her. She has asked for anything to do with cowgirls????

cowgirls??!!!!

good luck!
4 year olds love anything really, don't they. go to woolies and see what is on offer? or get them all stomp rockets - about £8 or £9, hugely popular, and even if they already have them they get lost so quickly they'll be happy to have some more.

Hulababy · 02/01/2006 21:43

Cowgirls - what about Jesse from Toy Story?

northerner · 02/01/2006 21:45

What's a stomp rocket pph? Never heard of those.

Hula - she has a Jesse already. So bit stuck there.

Geomag's on special offer at Toys R us. No matter how much you have, more just helps you build bigger things. Same applies to other constrcution sets IMO. Not sure of age suitablility though?

Playdough or other craft / art materials - can never have too much and they can always be put away for a rainy day.

'Real' musical instruments - you can get some very unusual percussion instruments from music shops and they will give play value for a long time.

Cooking set - bought or home made? With ingredients and instructions to make something with parents' help.

Tickets to local attraction, vouchers for swimming pool, etc.

Gardening set, again you could make your own: little pots, trowel, seeds, potting compost.

northerner · 02/01/2006 21:51

Unfortunate abbreviation of Mr Potato head in my last post

books.

Bozza · 02/01/2006 21:52

TBH there are certain art/craft items (wax crayons) I can never see us wading our way through.

Agree with the construction set thing. I have quite often bought lego for 4yos. Also books are good.

How about sticking a tenner inside the card and the child can have the fun of going to the toyshop and picking his own toy?

For the 8yr old cowgirl.. how's about looking for a gillet or some type of waistcoat thingy that looks like cowskin? Or a waistcoat with tassles on it...and 2 plastic guns and a hat

As usual, I am of immense help

LIZS · 03/01/2006 09:17

Tend to get Orchard Toy type games, lego/k'nex or craft based sets from elc. Our niece who has just turned 9 had a hairy gilet for her b'day and we got her Pineapple top and trousers, otherwise books ?

elliott · 03/01/2006 09:46

perhaps I am a mean stick but I wouldn't spend £10 on a birthday present - I'd be broke in no time! Aim for £5-6 usually, unless its a particularly close friend.
I usually go for books. Small playmobil sets might be good too, or the lego kits mentioned.

hana · 03/01/2006 09:52

also don't spend more than £5 or £6 for school friends
Richard Scarry books are great for boys ( and girls or course, dd has a few of them!) and they are about a fiver

elc are doing a book exchange now - bring in up to 5 old books and you can buy 5 at half price, they are donating them to worthy children in the uk

Bozza · 03/01/2006 09:54

Yes I do the £5-6 range too. Last party DS went to, I got 2 lego racer cars for £2.99 each. Also a joint party for 3 girls, I got bead kits from M&S at a fiver each on 3 for 2.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 03/01/2006 09:57

I tend to buy books in Ottakars, and then try to stick with the red label ones, so every 5th book is free, so to speak.

I also buy the same book everytime for the boys {dragons) and the same one for the girls, that way there is no playground comparisons of who got what for their B/D from DS.

Enid · 03/01/2006 09:59

second the stomp rockets suggestion

sooooooooooo popular
