b*ll&cks - is it stolen

I purchased a Motorola V3 mobile phone off ebay brand new as a suprise pressie for my DH

He was over the moon with it.

Put his sim in and it said "Unregistered Sim" - I was annoyed as the listing said that it was unlocked.

He took it into town today to get it unlocked and it looks as though the actual phone is barred to all networks due to it being stolen?

He wasnt very clear as was very pissed off - ended up practically throwing the phone at me as he got a parking ticket whilst trying to sort it out.

Anyone know what sim unregistered meanS?

IF it is stolen is tehre anythign I can do about the money>

was the box sealed?

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 14:18

It was a presentation box type thing. Aluminium

Inside the phone had all protective plastic covers on

check the blokes feedback rating on ebay, see if anyone else has had similar problems?

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 14:28

well, this is where it gets worrying.

I didnt notice til after he bid that he had no feedback.

I was really nervous but then his communications were fine and it arrived as described and when he said it would obviously until this has happened.

Ive emailed him saying that it should have been unlocked but there is a problem and could he shed any light.

I paid by paypal can I get my money back that way?

see if he offers an alturnative, did he have any others fopr sale?

whats his ebay ID?

SenoraPartridgeinaPearTree · 27/12/2005 14:32

yes, you can get your money back via paypal.

not sure exactly how the system works, but since stolen goods are involved you may have to report to the police before you can claim.

btw, unregistered sim is what my phone says when I put a spanish card in it. it could be foreign rather than stolen.

also did you dh try every network?

FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 14:35

let me just check something with my razr.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 14:36

"also did you dh try every network? "

Sorry SP, what do youy mean

FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 14:38

hmmm, well mine (contract with ornage) will take a PAYG t-mobile sim.

SenoraPartridgeinaPearTree · 27/12/2005 14:40

I mean it might just be that it isn't unlocked and can only be used with one of the networks - did your dh try all of them? Like i say, my phone says that when I put my spanish sim card in, but also when i put in a "wrong" sim card.

ftony: some phones come unlocked even with contracts.

FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 14:42

i know, i was just wondring as he states in the auction it was an unwanted upgrade, whether the phone has been assigned to his number IYSWIM.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 14:42

Thats what I was wondering, is the problem merely that it is locked to another network which is annoying that it said unlocked but fixable as we can get it unlocked.

Its the bit about it being stolen that is worrying.

Also, an official O2 shop probably wouldnt be keen on dealing with it would they? Am I right in thinking that unlocking of phones is more for a small "independant" mobile shop?

OP posts:
FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 14:43

has it got the IMEI number on it? its on a sticker under the battery.

SenoraPartridgeinaPearTree · 27/12/2005 14:44

yes, that's right. especially if by small "independent" shops you mean some dodgy bloke on the market.

sparklymieow · 27/12/2005 14:44

try a market. They normally have someone that will unlock phones and they aren't going to question it.

FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 14:44

i'd go with the bloke on the market myself.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 15:00

yep IMEI no is there

OP posts:
FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 15:01

probably not stolen, just i dont think O2 do unlocking.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 15:03

just done a quick search on motorola unlocking and the sites ask for imei to check that unlock code is available.

checked about 10 and all said imei not found or your not authorised to use this service

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

If it was an unwanted upgrade it will just need unlocking but an official network shop wont do it. Most markets have someone who will do this for a tenner. My exh used to run a market stall and did this all the time (but he's moved to Thailand now)!

FairyTaleinNewYork · 27/12/2005 15:08

you need to pay for imei unlocking sites. take it to the bloke at the market, see what he says.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 15:11

have to find a market now lol
