I miss London! Feel really unsettled and ds been really poorly for a week with throat infection, raging temp, chesty cough.

Does it take ages to settle when moving house? Had forgotten how weird it all is.

snort at cafe nero in the next "village"...
pur-lease
septic tank?
I don't think so
bet you're on a flipping bus route into Oxford Circus aren't you

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 10:22

lol

you WORK in London fgs you lucky cow

that's teh best of both worlds

harpsiheraldangelssing · 08/12/2005 10:23

truly though...
go and volunteer for something (christmas flowers in church?)
go to the nativiy service
go and knock on a few doors and introduce yourself
do it now while you're dtill new and it won't feel so awkward

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 10:25

ooh careful of the xmas flowers

you'll step on Betty's toes she's been doing it for 70 years

but you could offer to help with the family service - many many brownie points

also put a notice in the village mag saying you are having a drinks party to say hello to everyone and open your house between 6-8 - really nerve wracking but it works (dont forget to ask for RSVPs so you know how many are coming)

PantomimEDAMe · 08/12/2005 10:25

We did the same as you and moved not far out from the M25. Took me about six months to stop mourning the loss of London - even though I was working there four days a week! Then small town life got a hold of me. Love it now and can't imagine moving back. Is just good to be somewhere pretty and green where you know your neighbours; and village events are so cute.

OP posts:
Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 10:27

go slowly mad between walks

AwayInAMunker · 08/12/2005 10:28

Snort at "working in London" - well, we can see the A40 with cars heading into the exciting parts of town from the office I suppose...

"your sister is your mother
your father is your brother
you never need another
the Yeovil family"

(to the tune of the addams family)

We moved ( 16 years ago ) from London to Northern Ireland ... God the change was hard to deal with .. Not only with the obvious troubles then - but

  • the pace of life was so much slower - I was used to nipping in to M&S and buying a pair of tights within seconds .... here they have a "wee chat" at the till
  • the shops were crapper - STILL no John Lewis
  • Everyone knows your business ( I still find that hard as I enjoyed the anonymity of a big city ..... )

However I love it here now - and I reckon it took me about 6 months to slow down and "smell the flowers"

Good Luck

lol. just realised others posted whilst I was reading. my post was in response to Dinny's question "tell me, those in villages, what do you do throughout the day?"

harpsiheraldangelssing · 08/12/2005 10:39

what do we do all day....
erm
let me think
well I do post on this parenting website sometimes
not often tho....
(better than worrying the livestock)

dinny · 08/12/2005 10:41

thanks - laughing so much at these, feel much better!

I am actually from the tiniest place ever - Isles of Scilly - it's just that 6 years in London have wiped my memory of everything else! lol.

good idea about drinks party!

Crystaltips, I went to uni in N Ireland - wher are you (ish)? I loved it (and am now remembering how much I hated London when I first moved here). Never happy unless moaning!

DOn't understand ? First Letter ?

stleger · 08/12/2005 19:32

Things could be worse - you could be in Cork! Nobody speaks to you in Cork unless you can estblish a blood relationship to someone who has been there 3 generations, unless they are trying to sell you something.
