Think I have persuaded DH to seriously consider moving out of north London. Around Hampton, Whittton etc seems to be a good compromise, ie still commutable to his job in the city, away from MIL, close to the M3 to get down to my folks in Hampshire. But need to know which of the possibilities in that area are best (propery prices schools general amenities etc). Anyone with any knowledge of the area do tell. TIA

I have lots of knowledge but you'll need to be more specific about exactly which areas you're considering, how old the kids are etc.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 18:20

Kids are 1 (in 2 weeks) and 4 (in January 2006),so neither at school yet. The area is still unclear, have been looking at properties (on web sites) in Hampton, Whitton, Strawberry Hill (think Teddington may be too pricey), West Moseley. Would like somewhere a lilttle villagey (if poss) family orientated, good facitities (parks open spaces public pool that sort of thing) Oh and M+s/Waitrose of course .

Sorry I was away from Wednesday and missed all your upset, hope you are OK.

well

First off, your child who is 4 in Jan 2006 will need to apply for school for next year by next week. I would call Richmond upon Thames council and ask what you should do - schools round here are generally very oversubscribed so you'll need to find out what you would do for next year (if you are going state).

Personally, I think Hampton is the nicest out of the areas you've mentioned. Teddington is lovely (if you can afford it) - Strawberry Hill is nice but is sort of an in-between place (between Teddington and Twickenham) so there's less around there in terms of facilities.

I've got to put the kids to bed but I'll post a bit more later.

ok I'm back!

Teddington - I think if you can afford it, Teddington will give you everything you want. Loads of trains into central London at peak times (though no trains round here are quick - it's like a tube, they stop everywhere on a massive loop line!). Schools are brilliant - any primary school in Teddington is good. M&S on the high street, Tescos, swimming pool, lots of sports facilities, Bushy Park, lovely walks by the thames, footbridge to the other side of the river and lovely walks to Richmond Park, Kingston v close for shopping. V villagy atmosphere. Teddington is also chocca full of young families so loads of play groups etc.

Hampton - is not on the main loop line (that Teddington, Kingston, S Hill are), it's on the Shepperton line which means the trains don't run as frequently. Some lovely schools, really lovely villagy feel, Bushy Park, lots of small shops, huge Sainsburys, v close to M3, Hampton Court, river - again lots of young families so lots of playgroups etc. One of the other (few) downsides to Hampton is that the secondary school there is not that well thought of - I am sure largely because Hampton School (private boys secondary) and Eleanor Holles (private girls secondary) take a lot of the pupils at secondary level.

S Hill - on the same train line as Teddington and has good schools nearby but with S Hill it would really depend on whether you were closer to Tedd or Twickenham in terms of what shops you get etc.

Property price wise - S Hill and Teddington will probably be much of a muchness. Hampton will be slightly cheaper.

We would be looking for a 3 or 4 bedroom house (up to £400k) would that be feasible in Teddington?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 06/12/2005 18:59

also Hampton has an outdoor pool, a little theatre - it's a very pretty place.

Can't get into the council website at the mo but if you go to www.richmond.gov.uk they have a map of where the primary schools are in the borough and should have a link to their ofsteds and SATS.

foxinsocks · 06/12/2005 19:00

you could probably get a 3 bed for £400k in Teddington but it wouldn't be huge

foxinsocks · 06/12/2005 19:06

these 2 houses are in quite nice locations and are in your budget - this will give you an idea of size

3 bed clonmel road
3 bed munster road

LadySherlockofLGJ · 06/12/2005 20:01

Farnham even

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 20:15

Oh LGJ have been checking every day to see if you are around, guess you have seen my thread about all of this. Did try to discuss Farnham with DH but point blank refused saying its too far away, so have compromised on SW London instead.

Hi I have been in Hampton for 2 months now. It is very villagy and has nice feeling. Look on rightmove to get an idea of prices for houses. 4 bed detached can be about £500,000 but think you can get them for less...

Not sure about schools as my dd still goes to her school on the Whitton borders. Very good. I think there are some good schools in Whitton from what I hear. Whitton is cheaper so you will get more for your money. However, check you are not too near to Hounslow.....

santabops · 06/12/2005 21:59

Whitton High Street is due a revamp soon. A whole block of shops is being knocked odwn and replaced I believe. Whitton train is 35 mins to Waterloo. Hampton is 46 mins according to dh.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 22:01

Why not too near Hounslow?

Me!

Hampton is affordable (you should get something good within your budget) and has some good primary schools and a lovely nursery . We're renting in Richmond and are hoping to buy next year. We'd considered Hampton but want to stay near to the DS' school, that is the only reason against Hampton. Teddington is indeed fab, lovely buzz.

Do you need train links?

LadySherlockofLGJ · 06/12/2005 22:03

Trust me .......................not too close to Hounslow..............noisy place, planes and cars, very very noisy.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 06/12/2005 22:07

TRULY not an issue, just kind of connected with you pre meet up, and now I have met you, I just want you to be happy, yes sappy I know, but MN does that to you.

bauble99 · 06/12/2005 22:09

Get back to the Home Counties and your aga, LGJ.
