Think I have persuaded DH to seriously consider moving out of north London. Around Hampton, Whittton etc seems to be a good compromise, ie still commutable to his job in the city, away from MIL, close to the M3 to get down to my folks in Hampshire. But need to know which of the possibilities in that area are best (propery prices schools general amenities etc). Anyone with any knowledge of the area do tell. TIA

OOOH bauble didn't realise you werein that neck of the woods. A nursery eh? definitely something to consider. Seriously though of that area (Richmond, Hampton, Ham, Hampton hill/wock/Whittom etc etc ) which are the good/bad/ugly etc. If I am going to persuade DH to do this I need the full low down.

I mean Hampton Wick and Whitton

bauble99 · 06/12/2005 22:12

Do you need public transport? We're now looking at Ham, no tube or train but close to the river, quiet and beautiful and still within a mile of Richmond and train links to Waterloo. Also, Richmond has fab resaurants and shopping (Waitrose, lovely Waitrose)

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 22:14

Yes DH needs transport to get to the city for work so must be near to train line into waterloo.

Bauble99

I am suitably crushed, no AGA here, but I still manage to

However I am on the PTA and the Parish Council,so AGA aside, worringly accurate. lmao

foxinsocks · 06/12/2005 22:17

If money is no consideration and transport is then
Richmond, Teddington, H wick, Hampton, Whitton, Ham

(Hampton Hill/Hampton much of a muchness)

If you're talking snob value, then Ham/Whitton probably at the bottom

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 22:18

LGJ not excusing myself, I honestly thought it was a great option, but sadly DH didn't agree and tbh it really has become make or break time with both of us trying our hardest to sort this out for all concerned. SW London will be a good compromise I feel.

OK. And without wishing to offend any mnetters who may live in these areas:

Whitton....Avoid. Redneck boy racerville.
Teddington...Young Guardian reader families. Good shops/resaurants etc.
Hampton Wick...Don't know enough about this area to comment. Near to Kingston....which has a Primark? Enough of a reason to move there IMO
Hampton....Mixed boy racerville with yummy mummyland, depending on where you live.
Ham.....Move there! I'll be there and I'll do you a deal at our Ham nursery!

bauble99 · 06/12/2005 22:21

But, oh foxy one, she could live in Petersham. Much 'naicer' than Ham.

bauble99 · 06/12/2005 22:23

Ham.Top end of Ashburnham Road is nasty, Vicky Pollard central, bottom end is lurvely.

foxinsocks · 06/12/2005 22:23

I knew you'd say that bubble and petersham and north parts of ham are lovely (as are the very southern bits as well) but there are no trains innit which means Mr Chicagomum would have to bus it to richmond which if he's anything like Mr Fox will not be the done thing.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 06/12/2005 22:24

CM

Please do not worry,B99 is just a bit of a bitch

Honestly, you have to do what works for you and your family. Will be around to do meet ups when you are ready.

Proud of you, you sound so much stronger so soon.

Much love

LGJ

sorry to those who live in hounslow, but i have just moved out.......

BluStocking · 06/12/2005 22:36

I know it used to be a national joke - but what's Surbiton like these days? It has some good houses v close to the river, v close to Kingston etc...and probably cheaper.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 23:15

am off to bed now but if anyone is around to add valuable info please do.

santabops · 06/12/2005 23:17

agree definitely not hounslow. whitton not so posh as the rest but get more house for your money and I think the primary schools are OK.

Richmond, Teddington very nice but price tag is high.

Hampton - I have liked it here the past 2 months. There is a 3 bed detached in my road for £369,000 which is a bit of a bargain. They have already moved out so paying 2 mortgages at mo.

Not sure how to do link but it is on with Mann Countrywide

Frostythesurfmum · 06/12/2005 23:56

Oi! I come from 'ounslow. Well Heston actually. Don't worry I'm not offended I scarpered to Poole years ago. My school was right under the flight path and we used to have to stop lessons sometimes each time a plane went over.

Have you thought about a bit further afield? Staines/Egham/Thorpe/Shepperton/Walton sort of area? Have absolutely no idea of house prices or schools, etc but they'd tick your boxes for being near the M3 and commutable to the city too.

BluStocking · 07/12/2005 00:16

you don't get 112' of garden in N London for under £400k!

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 08/12/2005 12:37

Is this in the good/bad part of Whitton?

poss new home?

OP posts:
GoodKingGeorginars · 08/12/2005 13:39

I live in Whitton! It's not redneck boy racerville where I live!
Basically, Whitton is fine around the high street and towards Twickenham (where I live). Where it does get manky is towards Hounslow, Hanworth (and Hanworth is cheap because there's no BR station - that's also one reason why Ham is much cheaper than Richmond) and Feltham (it is redneck racerville over that way) - e.g that house you've linked to - unless it's right at the eastern end of the road, I would say it's actually Hanworth, not Whitton. I'd check that it really is only 15mins walk from the station. Basically for the "good" bits of Whitton look inside the area bounded by Chertsey Rd (the A316), Hospital Bridge Rd (along there is where it gets less nice), Whitton Dene/Kneller Rd/Whitton Rd (near the rugby ground). I expect I've offended people here, but I wouldn't want you to avoid Whitton completely because lots of it is nice. (Mind you we're about to move to NZ because we can't afford to live anywhere round here)
I'd live in Teddington if I could, but unless you bought ages ago or have plenty of money, no chance. you get much more house for your money in Whitton and also the bigger houses have lovely big gardens too. The high street is a bit of 1970s relic, but it's very friendly and is gradually being revamped. Also you are very, very close to Teddington, Twickenham, Richmond - yummy mummy heaven and undeniably lovely places to live - without paying a fortune. Also, plane noise is extremely bad in Hounslow, but you could pay a fortune to live on Richmond or Kew Greens and still hear the planes quite loudly every 90 seconds....
Keep any places you see in Whitton coming and I'll give you the skinny on them!
Surbiton is actually a lovely place and I'd live there too if I had the cash for a house.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 08/12/2005 18:16

What about this one?

poss new home take 2

OP posts:
GoodKingGeorginars · 08/12/2005 23:50

Nice - very central and just look what you're getting for your money compared with surrounding areas! under 5 mins walk to the station too

santabops · 09/12/2005 19:40

Chigago mum

Agree about the first one that is not Whitton really but Hanworth. Put it this way I wouldn't buy a house there...

The second house is in a better area. Easy to walk to the High Street - lots of 'local' shops, plus a small Boots, Superdrug and Tesco Metro. Also fairly quick to the station. I would consider this area. However it is not considered as 'nice' as Twickenham or Teddington etc. It depends on what you like really.
