Things that are worth the money

The prompt for this is the ceramic hair straighteners thread, but I wondered what things people had paid that little bit extra for and thought it was really worth it.

Since having children I've spent a bit more on a really good haircut and think it's worth it because you wear hair everyday.

Anyone else invested in something and thought it worthwhile?

IPod
Digital camera and video camera
Broadband
Bread machine!
New kitchen (yum)
Chiminea mexican patio heater/barbeque thing - it's so blumin hot we toast marshamallows outside in November!

Childcare - nursery £630/month (more than half my salary ), but worth every penny .

Dont agree with the expensive kids clothes - so what if they go a bit out of shape after a few washes??!! They only fit them for five minutes. I would pay a bit extra for them to be tumbledriable, though - Next tend not to be, unlike Adams/Boots/M&S.

Fresh flowers in the house. Make me smile whenever I see them.

Grobag sleeping bags - a full nights sleep!!

Proper, expensive, dry-cured bacon that doesn't shrink away to nothing when you grill it.

Lancome mascara.
The money we're spending on renovating/extending our house.
Decent perfume.
It's taken me till now (nearly 40) to realise that decent clothes are worth the money after all.

Hi Bobsmum, DS, DD and I all have iPods amd DH says he wants one too. They are brill!

Jimjams · 20/10/2003 16:06

For us the biggest and best thing we have bought this year (at 35 quid a session) is private speech therapy for ds1. At last he is being given help weekly and it is being updated and we are able to work out why things aren't working and adapt them. I am much more relaxed and am finding it easier to do stuff with him as it is being regularly reviewed.

Just wish we could afford to pay for it 3 x a week.

otherwise my breadmaker (otherwise i'd be making gluten free breads by hand every week)
and our gym membership.

bundle · 20/10/2003 16:19

frizz ease serum
£7 an hour for a cleaner
snow white outfit for dd1 - £15 from woollies including bow, and she'd wear it 24/7 if I'd let her
our new renault scenic (after years of having a crappy vauxhall nova, it's like sheer luxury)
agree about the aged beef, organic or not
pedicures

Crunchie · 20/10/2003 22:15

I agree with the expensive clothes for kids being better value in the long run. I have 2 girls and gap stuff seems to do both of them (plus a friends 2 kids) and still look great, whereas some stuff just doesn't wash the same. However Gap sale is the only time I shop there.

Good makeup - I am a sucker!!

New Look for funky stuff for me, also Zara.

prufrock · 21/10/2003 09:51

Decent mattress
Rigby and Peller bras
Walkers Crisps
Heinz Ketchup

waterbaby · 21/10/2003 10:30

But theres only one of me zara, and I'm not sure that they all still fit... maybe I'll have a dressing up party by myself, crack open a bottle of bubbly and order a takeaway!!! Seriously not worth the money though, I'd have been better off buying two or three and some great accessories, then hiring something every so often for the glitzy dos. The one I love and can't bear to get rid of probably only looks great on a 21 year old though. Maybe I should invest in some shopping lessons!

ThomCat · 21/10/2003 10:32

Great family holidays

bobsmum · 21/10/2003 10:39

Alibubbles - speaking of delicious iPods - have you seen these! scroll down to drool over Groove bags!

Ness73 · 21/10/2003 11:07

Another vote for Grobags. Also, buying DD her own seat on the plane - fly to Australia with a baby on my lap? No thanks!

motherinferior · 21/10/2003 12:13

Books

Haircut

Suspect decent spec frames (mine v out of date at mo...)

handlemecarefully · 21/10/2003 13:48

Worth the money -
*having a cleaner (even though through the agency it costs £9 per hour)
*days out with my dd (we're all happy and relaxed during and afterwards)
*weekend breaks away without dd to recharge flat parental batteries
Not worth the money -
*ostentatious goods (I don't feel a need to show off!)
*'designer' clothes

alibubbles · 21/10/2003 14:07

bobsmum, DD would kill for the 'groove' tote bag, cool site, thanks for the info!

wilbur · 21/10/2003 14:18

Oooh, rockingrosebud, I'm saving up to have my eyes lasered, can't wait! Agree about the art, dh and I have a few bits and we get pleasure just walking past it every day, last year's Xmas gift to each other was 4 original photos that are v. funky and better than usual sweater/book/knickers combo.

Other good things:
Subscription to Good Housekeeping (I'm so so old and sad, but I love it)
Steam cleaner (they're great eh, doormat?)
NARS face cream (utterly ridiculous price but lasts for ages and my flaky blotchy skin is no more)
Proper Sellotape (cheap stuff is hell on Christmas Eve)
Good kitchen knives (if I have to cook....)

Not worth it:
Buying a brand new car
Posh paint, stick to Dulux

tinyfeet · 21/10/2003 14:27

I'm sure I'm repeating many of you, but for me:

Cleaner
Nanny
Classes for DD (sing-along, etc.)
A good watch (never take it off)
A good bag
Well-made shoes
Mobile phone

Frenchgirl · 21/10/2003 15:04

Definitely not worth the money:
dh's annual Great western train ticket (grrrr)

Worth the money:
dd's school and activities
organic bread and meat
well cut jeans and cashmere jumpers
good shampoo and haircut
holidays and days out with dh and dd

addle · 21/10/2003 15:15

Beetroot,

can I ask the name of your hairdresser in Wardour Street? and how much do they cost? and are they intimidating?

thanks

Addle
