Am I hopelessly out of touch re makeup for small girls?

A friend has bought my dd a makeup set for her 5th Birthday. She has a dd the same age, so I'm assuming that she thinks 5 year olds wearing makeup is fine and normal. I don't, but am quite happy to be persuaded otherwise if I am an old-fashioned fuddy-duddy.

And if you think 5 is too young, at what age would you think it was OK?

dd1 (6) has a play make up kit

she's not allowed to wear it out but she enjoys making up dd2 (3), herself and occasionally daddy

hellsbellsdownunder · 04/12/2005 14:50

my dd is 13 and just very occasionally asks to wear makeup eg for end of year disco. And sometimes if a friend is visiting who wears makeup then dd will suddenly emerge madeup during the play session. She is still a fairly immature 13yo IMO. (I'm not complaining!)

ENIDeepMidwinter · 04/12/2005 14:53

I would definitely let dd1 wear make up at 13

TroutSprout · 04/12/2005 16:02

I have no problem with my little one wearing make up for dressing up..like face paints. But makeup for real...about 11/12 i think...secondary school

vickiyumyum · 04/12/2005 16:09

i don't have a problem with young girls wearing makeup (from about 5) for special occassions e.g party, dressing up etc, and nail varnish in pale colours is fine (maybe i would feel differently if i had a dd instaed of 2 ds!), but i hate to see girls of about 4 plastered in make up mini skirts, high heels and i'm not talking about dressing up clothes either.

our next door neighbour at our old house has a dd (she was 3 at the time) who used to go to nursery wearing full make up, mini skirts, crop tops, skimpy vests, fish net tights! i thought it must just be a phase, but saw them in town recently and the dd now about 8 had stilleto heels, leather miniskirt, bleached streak in the front of her hair, tonnes of make up, handbag to amtch her shoes and her mum proudly told me they were looking to buy her first thong!!!! again maybe i am just being naive because i only have boys, but def didn't think that this wa the norm for 8 yo girls?

BudaBabeInAManger · 04/12/2005 16:12

I was banned from make-up till I was 16. My younger sis however was allowed full make-up from 13 - my Mum reckoned she needed it more!!!!

I only have a DS but at his Xmas bazaar at school last week there was a "Beauty Room" and the boys were as keen as the girls. Girls had nails done, hair braided or crimped, little bit of tinted lib-gloss. Boys had hair gel/colour and or tattoos (the wash-off ones obv!!).

I hate seeing girls under 13/14 wearing makeup. Loads of them do to school where it isnt allowed. I used to get fed up of having to deal with it every morning. Such a waste of time....

My DDs (5 & 4) have little make up sets for dressing up. Not strong colours but pale pinks, blues, etc that you can hardly notice when on. It's about pretend play, not about the way they look.

They wear make up for their dancing shows but that's the only occasion they would have any on outside the house.

I don't have a problem with it as part of play, but I don't think I would let them wear "proper" make up for going out til they were in secondary school.

twirlingaroundthechristmastree · 04/12/2005 16:48

I think lip gloss and nail varnish is fine (not for school though) from any age.

I am fine with face painting style make up & glitter spray & sparkly tattoos.

I don't like eye shadow, blusher, mascara or foundation on little ones though.

Before I had dd though I was much more puritanical

SueW · 04/12/2005 16:59

DD (almost 9yo) has proper make-up - blusher, blue eyeshadow and red lipstick which we had to buy for a show she did with dancing. They do need it when they are on stage with mega lighting in front of 2,000 people. SHe only wears it every two years though (and I've nicked her blusher now!)

Nail varnish is allowed in school hols and only whilst it remains nice - once chipped it has to be removed - and I don't have a problem with lip balm, as opposed to gloss, because experience is that when her lips get dry/chapped she seems to get more cold sores.

fairyjay · 05/12/2005 11:08

My dd is 12, and she has 'played' with make-up on occasions.

Sometimes she will wear it to a party or disco, but on the whole isn't really interested.

She comments that some of her friends wear mascara which runs when they swim, and how silly that is. Also, that some of the girls at school wear full make up.

We tell her that she is absolutely beautiful, and doesn't need it.

I think it is useful to 'practise' putting on make-up, because I still feel that I can't do it properly, and it's perhaps a confidence thing for later on!

What also helps, is that her 13 yo brother tells her that girls with lots of make-up on look tarty!

Blimey you lot are you in the dark ages

I cannot believe you actually think you wll stop your teena nd pre-teen daughters wearing makeup!! Maybe for shcool but otherwise you are gonna have a shock

I bought my first lipstick - Rimmel Heather Shimmer at 10 (and that was 25 years ago)

My kids have lip glosses - the 'kiddy' glosses last all of 5 mins and are usually only allowed for parties or play. (they are 6 and 4) However when I put my makeup on in front of them, they want some too, so the quite like Mac lipglass However a tiny weeny bit is not a problem IMHO, as I said it wears off quick.

Nailvarnish again is banned in school (although others do) but I allow it for parties.

I am assuming they will continue like this until about 10 - 11 when I would allow makeup at weekends or to go out, but ban from school as long as I can (same as peirced ears)

Nightynight · 05/12/2005 12:26

dx would kill me and the dds if they EVER wore makeup.

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 12:33

i agree crunchie

binker · 05/12/2005 13:33

5 is way too young - I'd say maybe 14 ? (that's probably unrealistic these days !) - I didn't wear any until I was about 16 or 17 ...

Epiffany · 05/12/2005 13:38

teens at the earliest
aside from the toddler who plays with her mums bits for fun like, but seriously learing to put it on.... def teens pref older the better

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 13:40

I still remember the thrill of buying my first lip gloss - dark plum from Miners - the sophistication! and a sparkly silver eyeshadow. Think I was about 12/13 and that was eons ago.

magnolianMistletoe · 05/12/2005 14:02

Crunchie, that is the exact same colour I 1st bought

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 14:03

my best friend wore heather shimmer

I was more a twilight teaser girl

foxinsocks · 05/12/2005 14:09

dd (5) has nail varnish and lip balm (the body shop type stuff). It's only really play stuff and she'd never wear either for school (though I've noticed LOADS of mums letting their kids take in those flavoured lipstick things under the guise of their children getting chapped lips!).

I don't think she'll want to wear proper make-up until secondary school. I didn't wear make-up for ages (prob 16) but I was very much a tomboy and was lucky enough to have quite good skin.

hovely · 05/12/2005 14:39

I seem to recall that I first tried to get served in a pub when I was 13 (unsuccessfully) so feel that the make-up thing came rather before that.
Probably 10-11-12 ish, for special going out only, a dab of pink lip gloss and a smear of sparkly lilac eyeshadow. But when my DD reaches that age I expect I will feel she is too young (she is only 4 now).

miggy · 05/12/2005 14:39

I dont mind nail varnish either, in fact dd (6) has a better collection than me and does my nails for me! Make up-no, not till older.
At privilege time on Friday afternoons the girls in ds's class are allowed to do manicures, last week ds (8) came home with purple, this week it was pink with a glitter layer on top. That does worry me a bit - though he swears they chose the colours

handlemecarefully · 05/12/2005 14:42

I think it's okay in the context of dressing up games too - i.e. for home /indoors use complete with feather boa and purple sequinned ten gallon hat and mums high heels

binker · 05/12/2005 18:11

I was given a set of Mary Quant make up (foundation and lipsticks) as an early teen and used to put it all on and look awful and scrub it off again, but I did like the whole process, plus the exciting smell of the lipsticks and the groovy packaging...graduated to Biba lipsticks when older...esp. the very dark plum coloured ones...
