but if it's OK to send a picture with a card, why not on one?

dramaqueen72 · 02/12/2005 19:09

each to their own I guess..........

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 02/12/2005 19:13

Because I like my Christmas cards to have a Christmas theme Janh, not be portraits of people. I don't mind looking at photos though, as long as I am not expected to keep them and treasure them.

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 02/12/2005 19:13

I think they're sweet. My friend's are the best - she, her dh and dd dress up as elves / Christmas puddings / reindeer / whatever and they are bloody hilarious.

HosannaInExcelsassy · 02/12/2005 19:16

Naff.As.Heck.

( However, have done the dds as santa and little helper for a card - strictly for mil and great aunt who will love it! Not for anyone else!)

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 02/12/2005 19:32

Does it really matter?

Davros · 02/12/2005 19:38

Loathe if its the front of the card, especially any dressing up. BUT I must confess that I do print a photo of DS and DD with a message saying "X and Y say Happy Xmas", but just on address labels and put it inside most of the cards. As DS has autism our friends don't see a lot of him so I like to keep them up with how he's doing and what he looks like in as simple a way as possible.

FairyMum · 02/12/2005 19:59

I don't send them myself, but I do like getting them. I think they are cute. I don't like it when I get these christmas-letters where people brag about their family-life, like "little sophie receuived the nobel peace price this year and little harry found the cure for the common cold"

TroutSprout · 02/12/2005 20:00

got one today...quite cute i thought. Can't be arsed to do it myself though

santabops · 02/12/2005 20:18

Not for Christmas cards but I do send thank you cards with their picture on the front and a message of thanks inside. The relatives all seem to like it as we don't get to see them a lot.

JingEllBells · 02/12/2005 20:50

Very interesting thread.

I do this, but I have a lot of elderly rellies who live a long way away and whom I don't see from one decade to the next. So, for them, it's a nice way to see what the kids look like, etc. I do not send them either to people we see frequently (why?) or to anyone under pensionable age (cos I'm afraid of being throught cheesy). I should point out, bosscat, that my children are, of course, exceptionally gorgeous. I wouldn't inflict them on people if they were ugly.

This year my dds have made cards for their friends at school. They did a picture which we scanned and then printed off in suitable numbers. They'd have lost interest otherwise after the first two or three (they are 5 and 3). Is that cheesy too?

If they include the family dog with a hat on, a la Eddie and the Crane family, then I'm all for them. Otherwise, no.

galaxy · 02/12/2005 21:40

Wouldn't mond if from family but would find it odd if from friends/colleagues

I like them if I know the children. Babies and toddlers are best - find the Prince Charles type family portraits pretty repellant.

nooka · 02/12/2005 22:31

My dad is an accountant, and he gets quite a few of these from his clients. That seems a little odd, but they are always very nice photographs (professionally taken I am sure). They don't get displayed though! If it's attractive/funny then I can't see the problem really. I think nice to get cards full stop, and for me there are a lot more tacky shop bought ones out there - the majority of them really!

pookey · 02/12/2005 22:32

Oh dear I have just spent load of money on stuff to do this for family, feeling slightly silly now! Also not sure I can be arsed!!!!!

wewishyouaClaryChristmas · 02/12/2005 22:33

I don't do this with the pix but is sending your own home-made cards cheesy?
We start at half term usually and do loads of different designs, just do a few each day.
They are not very stylish or professional but I was hoping they were quite sweet (eg 2.5 yo's efforts at colouring in a santa stamp) but maybe not?

ja9 · 02/12/2005 22:54

i dont like these..

but i DID do it last year

well, he was dressed up cute in a red velour sleepsuit with a cute reindeer on front. he was only 4 mths old and lots of the folks i was sending cards too hadnt seen him in real life, so that was my excuse!

thecattleareALOHing · 02/12/2005 22:55

I like homemade cards too.

MARINAtivityPlay · 02/12/2005 23:01

Ds and dd make cards for close family and godparents and we also get Christmas Smiler stamps done. But that's it really.
Dd's card for her grandparents needs a chisel to open it there is so much glue and glitter inside. Eat your heart out Bing Bunny!

AwayInAMunker · 02/12/2005 23:04

I like homemade cards, just not cheese-grinned adults smiling at me!

sansouci · 02/12/2005 23:07

Almost all of our friends & definitely all of our family live far away so have been enclosing picture of the dc in Xmas cards. Probably won't be doing that this year as ds is currently in hospital.

Friends apparently want to see our ugly mugs as well. Such a change since our wedding so forget it.

MummyJules · 02/12/2005 23:13

I have decided to take the plunge and do it this year via here but only for relatives/close friends as I agree if its for people you don't know very well or see every day then there is no point and would be seen as a waste of money in my opinion. I know my sister has always done this but she is very creative and makes funky cards with a black and white photo of her very photogenic kids and makes it non christmassy so that people can keep it up and use it as a sort of cheap present for relatives and close friends which I do think is a nice idea and I always appreciate it. DD and I are going to make a sign out of a peice of thick card with " HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU" on it which she can hold.

Is this really tacky?!!!! I expect it is!
