I posted a thread last week about my ds (8) wanting a mobile phone, and that I thought this was WAY too young. Well, on the news just now they had an item about a new mobile soon to be on the market called the 'Teddyphone' (which looks not surprisingly like a teddy) which is aimed at children from the age of 4 and up!!!

Oh no! More microwaves. More masts. How ridiculous.

NomDePlume · 29/11/2005 12:58

Ridiculous. Disgusting that it is allowed to be marketed.

Both my DSs have a mobile (have had them for a year now) and I think that they were too young to have one at 11 & 12.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 13:01

If you want to stop the masts and the ridiculous profits of mobile phone companies, take the phones off your children and let them borrow yours if they are out somewhere on their own.

They do not need them at school, they do not need one for schooldays and one for the weekend, they do not need a phone each.

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:03

Rhubarb - But do they not need the camera on their phone to take to school to photograph them kicking the sh*t out of someone?

NomDePlume · 29/11/2005 13:03

They're in the processof erecting another mast at the top of my road. Bang in the middle of an area heavily populated with families with young children

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:06

Has anything dangerous about the masts actually been proven yet?

Bomper · 29/11/2005 13:06

The guy from the companies defence was that the 'Teddyphone' gave off one tenth of the radiation that a 'normal' phone does and was therefore safer to give to children than your old one etc. So, the fact that they are hoping to trawl in millions more had nothing to do with it then hmmm? And who in there right mind would give a 4 year old a mobile anyway? 'Cos lets face it any child over the age of about 6 wouldn't want a phone that looks like a teddy anyway!!

OP posts:
SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:08

They will only make money if people buy them! If you don't like the idea of them.... just don't BUY one!

I'm not too sure what all the hysteria is about. Its not like they are handing them out as standard issue to every 4 yr old. My ds won't be getting one! So why worry about it?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 13:08

Lots of reports done on the masts and on mobile phones for children. Trouble is the government get taxes from the sale of phones so they don't want to go scaremongering. There is radioactivity present in mobile phones, and a higher quantity around masts. Argument is as to whether the amount of radioactivity present is actually harmful. But put it this way, if you had Orange putting up a mast near your house, would you be happy?

Bomper · 29/11/2005 13:12

Not hysterical - just amazed! Thought it would be something interesting to discuss. Sorry.

OP posts:
SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:12

I f I read enough of the bad reports about then it would bother me! Like many other things. But I haven't read anything that has convinced me that there is any real danger other than people being a bit pissed off coz they don't look great on the landscape. Same with Pylons! There is a big campaign in my local area to stop the building of more massive HV Pylons across some fields.

We'll see how much they moan when their electricity supply weakens due to high demand.... when it takes 30 mins to boil a kettle people will flock to support the pylons! LOL!

PeachyPlumFairy · 29/11/2005 13:13

I'd never buy my kids a teddy phone. But if you were going to I suppose a tenth radiation is better?

I just bought myslef a new phone, but I did like the look of the teddyphone and I wonder if it would appeal more to tennies / sad oldies like myself anyway as a novelty item?

DH very against mobile masts in built up areas, syas the army covers anything similar for saftey reasons (I may have quoted him wrong, Dh is extrememly techie and I do not necessarily follow a thing he says).

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:13

Bomper it is interesting! I wasn't saying "don't post!".... was just offering a less concerned opinion.

Bomper · 29/11/2005 13:15

OK

OP posts:
CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 13:15

Statistics show a higher incidence of cancers and things like leukemia around mobile phone masts, but this is dismissed as coincidence.

Radiation is bad for you. Small doses are said to be ok, but if you are getting those small doses on a regular basis, then gradually it builds up and you get ill.

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:18

Rhubarb - You get more from standing next to the microwave!

HRHQoQ · 29/11/2005 13:22

Quick throw your microwaves in the bin we should all be dead by now

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 13:22

HA! Don't have one! So nerrrrrr!

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:28

lol!
I remember standing watching a sponge pudding whizz around in the microwave whilst pregnant with dd. DH walked in and gasped "DON'T STAND THERE, YOU'LL ZAP THE BABY!!!". lol.

futurity · 29/11/2005 13:31

I assume this is it?

SackAche · 29/11/2005 13:34

Actually... now that I've read that its not a REAL phone! I think its a great idea! But not for 4 yrs olds.

PeachyPlumFairy · 29/11/2005 13:41

Now i've seen it more clearly (ie the news were really inaccurate) I think it is a GREAT idea and may get one for my ds's to share

Lucycat · 29/11/2005 13:46

on the subject of masts there is one (or several) of top of our local hospital's maternity unit! they are so strong that you can't work your car alarm in the car park!!
Nice

doormat · 29/11/2005 13:47
  1. what would a 4yo be doing by being on their own
2. could a 4yo pump in a number inc area code

are these manufacturers knobheads or what????

  1. Children do get lost

  2. They wouldn't have to - just push whichever button they need to to call whoever it is whose number has been preset.
