what would you do? just sort of waving at you from the cash bit, the person who last used it was clearly a f/w and just left it there...

I would hand it in. I found £20 in the machine at our local shop and handed it in.

Lio · 28/11/2005 15:52

If bank was open I'd take the money in, if not I'd take the money and take it to bank as soon as convenient.

Chloe55 · 28/11/2005 15:54

Ooooh dilema! I think I'd probably hover for a bit just in case the idiot who forgot to collect it hurried back over and then if they didn't I think I'd take it, then again would I? Oh I just don't know, if you don't take it someone else will and if you give it to the bank would they be able to know who used the machine last?

What did you do?

misdee · 28/11/2005 15:55

i'd hand it in. in fact i have done. i once last my card at the cashpoint and some kinds soul handed it in.

Tamba · 28/11/2005 15:55

Seeing as its christmas and i would have a pretty miserable christmas if i lost it, i would hand it in.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 28/11/2005 15:56

Don't they have cctv at many cashpoints? If so there may be a chance of proving who left the money (and who took it).

hatstand · 28/11/2005 15:56

didn't do anything. but the person who used the cash point after my dh this morning helped themselves. He phoned the bank to see if it had been handed in)

OP posts:
iota · 28/11/2005 15:56

don't most cashpoints have CCTV -- I think that would persuade me that honesty is the best policy

LadyTophamHatt · 28/11/2005 15:56

Years and years ago, whist out xmas shopping this happened to me.
I went to the cash point to get some money out, only to discover the person before me had left £40 there.

I spent it.

munz · 28/11/2005 15:57

oooooooh yes dilema -

a) is the person next to u at the cash point/near by?
b) is it in a bank?
c) is there any cameras?
d) erm, well when a bank over paid me by £10 on a withdrawl I kept it but £100 now don't know about that one - I did find £10 in a card in clintons once and handed it in never got it back thou - they said I would if it wasn't claimed.

mandymac · 28/11/2005 15:57

I would be very tempted to keep it, but my conscience would get the better of me. I would probably go into the branch (if it was outside an open bank/building society) and report it. I would hope that if it wasn't claimed, I would get it.

If nowhere to report as such, I would take the cash home and phone the relevant bank.

I would be gutted if it was me who had left it there (being a scatty new mum) and I would really miss that amount of money, so that would dictate my actions really.

Shame - would be great to spend it on new shoes .

Milliways · 28/11/2005 15:57

Nearly all cash machines have cameras now, so you may have been filmed taking it. The person who didn't collect it would have reported it to bank, and they can prove atwhat time his card was used etc so they could get it back to him. For that amount I would hand it in.

hatstand - is this one of those philosophical theoretical threads or has this happened to you??

5/5 handing it in so far...not sure this is truly representative of the British public. Still, nice to see such morals

mazzystar · 28/11/2005 15:59

you have to hand it in. it would be theft to keep it.

Feistybird · 28/11/2005 15:59

have handed money in (many moons ago when I was earning a pittance too).

dp was incredulous

MistleToo · 28/11/2005 16:00

I've taken 10p from the change box at a parking station but if I found money at the hole in the all I'd hand it in to the bank cos I want someone to do that for me.

Chloe55 · 28/11/2005 16:00

Ooops sorry Hatstand, just called your DH an idiot , but then you did call him a f/w

hatstand · 28/11/2005 16:01

when I was about 16 some of us found an evelope stuffed with cash amongst some post-party morning after detritus. Fairly certain it was ill gotten gains we divied it up. BIG mistake. Two large men came back for it. One of my friends had to distract them whilst we put it all back in the envelope and "suddenly" found it. never cross a crook.

OP posts:
Mercy · 28/11/2005 16:01

I used to think I would keep it but now I would hand it in.

This happened to dh some years ago. He requested £40, got distracted and left the money behind. He only realised two hours later and went back to the bank. Fortunately, a young man had handed it in and the bank gave it to dh. At the time £40 was a lot to us. It was the difference between eating that week or not.

How do you know the person was a f/wit? They could have had all manner of things on their mind, like dh.

However, I have found a fiver blowing around on the pavement and kept it. And a couple of pound coins

hatstand · 28/11/2005 16:03

sorry - possibly being disingenuous - just wanted to do a quick straw poll - the reason I asked is cos dh left £100 at the cp this morning. He phoned the bank and no-one has handed it in.

OP posts:
hatstand · 28/11/2005 16:04

btw - i would have handed it in. wouldn't really have considered not doing.

OP posts:
munz · 28/11/2005 16:04

hmm see on the surface i'm v tempted to say yes i'd hand it in - mum forgot her purse once in iceland and thankfully the trolly boy handed it in - was hte diff between us eating as well as hshe had her £80 house keeping in it - she got them a cake each to say thanks, anyhow, i'd also in the back of my mind be thinking well if it was my money would anyone hand it in iycwim - we couldn't loose £100 so i'd hand it in, but would like to think someone would hand mine in iycwim.

Mercy · 28/11/2005 16:05

Sorry hatstand I just called your dh a fw too

binkie · 28/11/2005 16:05

When I was about five I found a pound note in a puddle in our street (this will have been mid-60s, so worth a lot) on my way to school. I asked my teacher to give it to the police.

Six months later a policeman came into our classroom and ceremonially gave me back the pound.

Do you think that would happen nowadays?

(Sorry about your dh, hatstand. Hope CCTV catches them.)
