Lidl !!

OK guys, can I have a comprehensive list of what's good and what's not at our favourite German store ... have decided Mr Tesco is getting too much of my hard-earned cash (just spent over £80 for a week's shop for DH, DS and I - OK OK I bought a few extras ... lightbulbs and a chocolate advent calendar - pleez!).

So - I know a lot of Lidl products were mentioned on the Money-Saving Tips thread but would appreciate your likes and dislikes in one place!!!!

I like the tinned food, the veg, and the frozen stuff. My kids love their chicken nuggets and their pizzas. The only thing I do not buy there is fresh chicken as it seems to go off very fast

Pasta , olive oil, balsamic vinegar, nuts, sultanas, cheese, basmati rice, chopped tinned tomatoes - all excellent. Don't bother with the breakfast cereal - its mostly like cardboard!

Thanks Jodde! they have just built a new one near me and this thread is just what I need. But no one has recommeneded any wine yet!

haven't tried the wine - but have had sherry - which was fine and very cheap

Ooh thanks for starting this Jodee, I now live near a Lidl so I'm off there too soon. On the wine front Tinker et al were recommending the Prosecco on the other thread.

the HUGE bags of crisps are lovely.the oregano ones! Also cheese is ok

pressed apple juice, little sausages (nurnberger or something), choc puds, fromage frais, tissues, paper napkins, loo rolls, light bulbs and batteries, small cartons of juice, bin liners and washing up liquid, shampoo, bags of small chocolate bars (copies of Bounty, Mars etc), ketchup, mustard etc.

The red wine is good but not particularly cheap compared with the supermarkets eg Aussie Shiraz and Chilean Merlot, both £3.99 - mind you they are always that price and don't suddenly go back up to £5.99.

The produce is very cheap and quite good.

Last time I bought a packet of what looked like luxury choc bics and they were GINGERBREAD inside (fine if you like gingerbread of course ).

And then there's the Stuff. Have a look at their website for this week's specials every week. There is a lot of tat but some real bargains - the best ones go fast though.

Oh, don't forget the £1 for the trolley and loads of bags!

I read this as lid - and wondered if you like me has lost a lid of a pot!!!
Then I was really puzzled as to what a german store had to do with lids unless you bought lots of lids in there!

Ooo, a Lidl thread. Agree with all so far. They do a lovely South African Chenin Blanc (blue bottle) plus their Asti is very cheap.

Also, ahem, condoms are very cheap

fab liposome day cream moisturiser at £2.00 approx! Their Cien skincare range is incredibly cheap but so far seems to be ok for my skin.

Mainly go there for the tins of veg, tomato sauce, children's shampoo and bubblebath, fruit juice cartons, iced tea, frozen pizza topped baguettes, ice cream and alcohol(cheap spirits for mixing)

Also good for chocolate christmas decorations and continental boxes of chocs and bics for presents.

I use their washing liquid W5 its called i use the colour one,also for those of us with nappy wearing children theirs are quite good too,i had to use them when we went to spain earlier in thre year.

Just made a tentative trip to shops with baby (2nd outing). Went into Lidls and bought:

black bags (very strong)
wine (most of it tastes loverly)
roast beef (not stocked up on meat yet since baby)
frozen yorkshire puds

Their washing powder/liquid does get stuff clean, but am allergic to it.

Nappies
Peanut butter
Large tins of fruit
Cava
Chocolate and cakes

Don't like the fact they don't have belts to hold your child in the trolley and the way they have a tiny bit at the end of the tills so you don't have time to pack your bags properly. and of course no bags either.

Eulalia, they don't want you to pack your bags at the till, they want to get you through at the speed of light and then pack at your leisure on the shelf behind!

I know it's in and out of the trolley twice but minimal staffing levels is one of the reasons they're so cheap, if we all packed as we went they'd need more checkout people. Ditto paying for bags. (I have 2 big Lakeland bags with wooden handles plus a 75p Sainsbos one plus a string bag, I can fit a trolleyful in them.)

Thanks Janh for link, I think I will wait until Thursday and get down there for the specials - the valet stand is just what I need (or rather DH, to encourage him not to drop his clothes on the floor) - bargain at £12.99.
Are the Weetabix/Walkers crisps any cheaper?

Oh its not fair. I want a Lidl! But there isnt one anywhere near here. (sad face but dont know how to do it)

the prosecco is very good and only about 3 quid a bottle

loved the little nurnberger sausages and the lasagne from the chiller cabinet (not frozen) was lovely, as were the chilled pizzas

olive oil was v good, hi juice squash and cartons of fruit juice also good

i got some magnum stylee ice creams for the kids and they said they were better than magnum!

Well impressed! Went yesterday armed with a long list of your recommendations and spent a lot less than if I'd bought the equivalent in Tescos (would have saved a lot more but spent £12.99 on clothes valet ...) Thanks for the tips about taking your own bags and packing on the shelves at the back - the woman behind me in the queue was in a really foul mood because the check-out guy was taking so long dealing with a return item ahead of me, I didn't dare pack my bags at the till!
Thought the store was much cleaner than our grotty local Co-op and produce fresher than in there too. Didn't get any fresh meat and thought moggy would turn her nose up at the cat food selection so still have to go to Tescos for some bits and bobs but would still come off better money-wise.
(Would have posted this yesterday but the bottle of Prosecco sent me off to an early slumber!)

I love Lidl but why wont my ds (15) be seen walking with me when I'm carrying a Lidl bag??
