tomorrow night with DP for the big MN Xmas meet up because he wont take a bottle of EBM. He last did it at about 3 weeks old.

He puts it in his mouth, does a few sucks and spits it out in disgust. (which as it happens is what he has been doing with most solids too). He is 31 weeks/7 1/2 mths. Then has has a huge hissy fit.

I have to leave at about 5.30-6pm ish to get there so i could do his last feed of the day then (instead of 6.30pm 7ish). However, he does sometimes stir in the evening/early morning for a feed (probably due to the not taking solids).

Someone please reassure me or give me some good advice to DP or i cant go.

Brilliant - I'll prop you up if you get wobbly about leaving him too Well, I might wobble too, but that's only because I look like a weeble atm

(And Miaou, yep, am devilishly sneaky )

superblastofflips · 25/11/2005 20:46

what do you give him for solids as im wondering why hes spitting it out! or maybe he not ready! my DD spatted out baby rice so i gave her vegs and she wolfed it down!! (eek!)

popsycalindisguise · 25/11/2005 20:48

mam ultivent teat
the only thing my ds2 would take
get down to boots

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 21:18

RESULT!

He napped whilst we picked DD from nursery. i stayed out the way when he woke so he didnt see me. Heated up bottle (slightly warmer than normal - ta supablastofflips), warmed the teat (thanks cliff), used a slower teat (thanks enid) and disappeared off with DD whilst DP grappled with him. After a bit of fighting and spitting out he drank the whole NINE floz! And wanted more apparently. He didnt get any more .

Ive expressed more tonight (10 floz - no wonder he's so attached! . I hadnt finished expressing but thats as much as the bottle would take ). Will have to do some more later tonight and that should cover every eventuality.

As for food - he spits out baby rice totally even though mixed with ebm. He will eat 50% of the time pureed apple and pear. He ate a jar of cowngate banana and custard in ikea the other day. He ate a bit of pureed sweet potato once and has refused it point blank ever since. Have no idea what his issue with food is tbh. DD loved being weaned.

HOORAY!!!! as hes probably is enjoying drinking it now

have you tried porridge? as my DD loves that!

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 21:27

The thing is - he turns his head away before you even get the spoon to his mouth. He just doesnt want to know. At 31 weeks i would have thought he was more than ready. Plus he'd be in need of more vitamins etc.

OP posts:
superblastofflips · 25/11/2005 21:34

have a go with the porridge and see what happens?

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 21:41

i'll try anything!

OP posts:
superblastofflips · 25/11/2005 21:42

i know what you mean!!

and banana too

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 22:39

spat out banana when i did it but ate it from a jar (banana and custard flavour). Have bought a chocolate pudding one as well in desperation!

Dd was so much easier and she had dairy and nut allergies ffs!

QV, he's plenty old enough for you to put some food on his highchair tray/table and let him play with it. Go baby led and don't bother with purees. There are some threads about it in the weaning section - Psychobabble's doing it, I know.

Don't fret about giving him vitamins (and I'd not start down the choc pud route, but I'm a mean mum - not much in the way of vits in that anyway) - he's getting plenty from your milk (and plenty of milk too - clever boy taking 9 whole oz and wow to you for being able to express so much!).

He's probably not very hungry for solids when there's yummy breastmilk to have - honestly your milk will be enough for him without vitamin supplements for a good while yet - some babies don't eat much before they're one.

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 23:00

I guess i expected him to just be like DD. I have left food on his highchair tray and he pulls the same face when he touches it a disgusted curled lip look.

i have even wondered whether he has issues with his mouth because of his dislike of things in his mouth. (His face got stuck just after crowning when born).

QV, DS did that too - the disgusted look. Still does with quite a few different textures, but is now happy to put his hands in yoghurt and porridge. He's always been a very clean child - no problem wearing a white T-shrt and eating cherries in the summer when he was about 14mo, for instance

He will get there with food - honestly, I know of several children who've been closer to 14mo before they ate anything like a meal-sized quantity.

christmonkey · 25/11/2005 23:05

Agree with hunker, absolutely no rush with the solids, no two babies are the same; some take to solids from the off and others don't see the point!

QueenVictoria · 25/11/2005 23:36

I wouldnt mind but he's started waking in the night again recently (on and off for about 5 weeks) and pooing in the night too (which also wakes him) which he doesnt do if he has eaten a fair amount of solids during hte day.

Ooooh - just had a look at psychobabbles threads and am going to try that - thanks hunker
