or a child of yours? i know it's not all about giving and receiving presents, just thought it would be interesting. my dd was 8 months on her 1st xmas and received 4 jigsaws aged 6 and up LOL

as a child i bought my mother a potato peeler.

apparently she still remembers it as the worst present ever.

my mum gave DP an "adult fantasy novel" one year. he was quite surprised, she's rather prudish usually. i don't think she understands the bookshop categories

my gran gave me a really scary ugly cat ornament when I was about 8. We have this running joke in my family and it gets left at each others houses, hidden in places you least expect to see it.It has even been to Australia twice and left with my dh's parents out there ..... but unfortunately it has made its way back here to haunt me again

cheekymonkey257 · 21/11/2005 22:14

I received a dinner service with matching pasta storage jar from MIL. Perhaps she thinks DH and I eat out of takeaway containers every night!
Along with a 250ml bottle of Cocoa by Channel!

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 21/11/2005 22:42

DH, he was DBF at the time, gave me a pair of tartan pyjamas with a matching hot water bottle on our first Xmas together. We had been dating for a few months and I was 24 at the time....

Cappucino · 22/11/2005 09:58

My father bought us a briefcase full of knives a few years back... we were living in a house with one cupboard in the kitchen and a tiny baby...

A woman at my weightwatchers meeting was given a packet of PG Tips teabags all beautifully wrapped with ribbon.

And my mother's friend bought my four-year-old dd a hideous frilly china doll which she wasn't allowed to play with because it would break, 'in case she wants to collect them when she is an adult'.

moondog · 22/11/2005 10:08

I know this comes up a lt but it's always hilarious!
Lol at bubbles' 73 year old grandad getting a popcorn maker!!!! Who gave him that?

acnebride · 22/11/2005 10:13

i got a teddy bear in tartan lederhosen from my godfather. i was 15.

moondog · 22/11/2005 10:45

lol!
More please!

vwvic · 22/11/2005 10:45

A set of very cheap steak knives from dp's grandmother when we had been veggie for the last 10 years.

wilbur · 22/11/2005 10:53

Who was it last year who once gave their dh the left-hand tyre for their car and he gave her the right-hand one as they were so broke? I'm sure it was heartbreaking at the time but I think it's such a good Christmas story - they'll be telling their grandchildren that one.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 10:54

Meat Cleaver - although I did put it to good use!

For dd when she was 3, a heavy porcelain doll that she promptly broke!

Radida · 22/11/2005 10:59

A friend of mine got a box of tissues from an uncle in law!!! Came in useful to hide mop up the tears of shock and embarrasment.

christmascard · 22/11/2005 11:21

xp got our daughters china dolls too, they were 3 and 1 at the time! and also designer teddy bears which they couldn't play with! along with nasty toys from pound shop that his mum had bought for him to give to them (he was around 24) which all smelled of smoke and had dd's name spelled wrong!

DH at work they all buy the tackiest thing with a xmas tree on for £2 or less for work deccies, must be awful in there!

carlychristmas · 22/11/2005 11:38

my dad and his dw bought me cat magnets to put on the fridge that you could dress up in various outfits i was 21 at the time!!!

Miaou · 22/11/2005 11:42

My mum and dad bought me a dolls pram. I was 9. I was so mortified!!!! I didn't even play with dolls at that age (and only briefly when several years younger). To make matters worse, they were not at all well off and it had cost quite a bit of money, and they were ridiculously pleased with it too. I had to choke my embarrassment and feign pleasure and play with it (although I have to say it hardly got used)!

Roobie · 22/11/2005 11:48

Loving these ...particularly the "Cocoa by Channel" (or was that serious?)

dh got an electric toothbrush from his parents a couple of years ago
He had never even mentioned electric toothbrushes to anyone before or ever wanted one
weird

they also keep buying dd (6) alice in wonderland and winnie the pooh books every Xmas and also occasionally during the year. It does not matter that we told them we bought very nice editions of these for her when she was a baby, and that we remind them every time that she already has these and to ask us about books for her. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

newgirl · 22/11/2005 13:25

I got a slinky nightie from my MIL - I am never going to wear it - what if me and DH then had sex and she was in one of our minds?! also got one same year from my mother - what the hell are they trying to tell me?!

my mum gave my 2year old a large porcelain doll with wings that now lives in the attic along with two huge framed pictures (metre by a metre) of teenage girls doing ballet. They will never go on a wall in our house. Bloody bid up tv has a lot to answer for. Mind you I gave her some tights one year.

mumbojumbo · 22/11/2005 13:27

Lol at these!

My ex-MIL bought me a potato peeler, and other very useful small kitchen utensils.....

Squirrel3 · 22/11/2005 15:21

My dp's ex bought me a present (from dsd) and when I opened it (in front of dsd) I nearly choked, it was cellulite treatment!!!!!

I had to smile at dsd (as she didn't realise the insult) and say "Thank you darling, just what I always wanted".

Bumbled · 22/11/2005 16:58

My Dad's girlfriend got me an embroidered tissue box cover one year - the sort you might give to a 75 year old lady - and my sister and I were POurSL upstairs. Unfortunately the baby monitor was on and she heard everything! She's the sort of lady who has lace doilies under every china ornament, so every christmas is pretty much a minefield in diplomatic terms....

NotActuallyAMum · 22/11/2005 17:01

This is going to sound really ungrateful but my ex bought me a day at a health spa. Yes I know some people would love this but anyone who knows me knows full well that this is just not my idea of a fun day out! It was funny tho to see the look on people's faces when I told them what he'd bought me cos I just knew they were thinking "OMG why on earth has he bought you that?"
