Sorry foundintranslation, I was awash with admiration at your answer when I first saw it, but it just seems to me that a vest is a more likely answer than toga. It would help to see all the answers as I think you can then get a feel for what sort of clothing they are after, eg current or old forms of clothing). Also, has vest been used as an answer before? Just want QofQ to see both answers so she can make up her mind.

HRHQoQ · 17/11/2005 11:35

I think toga is more likely than vest, but it could be either. I think you should put both answers in, and explain the reasoning behind each!

Nightynight · 17/11/2005 11:49

Question 7 was "Pursuing Rudolf" and the answer was DEERSTALKER. So going on the same lines, we could get rid of the -ing in embarking, which is the hardest thing to get round. In other words, the answer could be "--er"

Lonelymum · 17/11/2005 11:50

No I think to gain is to obscure. If you add "in" to vest you get invest which I know doesn't mean to make a profit necessarily but it is a common assumption that an investment will bring profit.

Embarking with G and 2 is really tricky though!

WigWamBam · 17/11/2005 11:50

I think vest is the most likely of the two.

I was thinking about number 2 - could it be dress? As in, dress being something a female wears, but also being something that both male and female do?

Lonelymum · 17/11/2005 11:53

But it say "worn by both". Men don't wear dresses, they get dressed, whereas they both wear jeans and jean is a feminine name.

Lonelymum · 17/11/2005 11:55

Anyone want to go through this list of clothing to find an 8 letter word that would fit the clue? list

WigWamBam · 17/11/2005 11:56

But they dress, don't they? And military uniform is called dress, men have dress shirts and dress suits ... I'm just not convinced by jeans, that's all!

Mercy · 17/11/2005 18:38

I still go with jeans but agree vest or toga is a very close call.

QoQ - I think you should have the final decision.

I hate to throw another potential spanner in the works but is 34 really pith hat? Isn't more commonly known as pith helmet? Didn't someone else suggest pork pie?

QoQ, can you check this one; you've written "Not and edible covering"

HRHQoQ · 17/11/2005 18:44

ok - I'm not entirely convinced on the "jeans" one myself - especially if the missing answer the "2" bit refers to answer 2.

I've gone for "vest" for that one - just 'feels' better.

should be an edible covering.

WHat's a pork pie??? (over than DH's favourtie 'treat' ???)

Mercy · 17/11/2005 19:06

Pork pie is a style of hat (do you remember ska,Special AKA etc) However it doesn't really fit in with the clothing answers I agree.

But neither does spencer in my view

Sorry Qoq I just want you to win

WigWamBam · 17/11/2005 19:06

Pork pie hat ... as worn by ska bands (think Specials, Selecter, etc)

WigWamBam · 17/11/2005 19:07

Cross posts mercy

HRHQoQ · 17/11/2005 20:32

ooo blimey - tricky stuff (I want to win too LOL).

OP posts:
foundintranslation · 17/11/2005 20:37

re. 2 - I do find 'jeans' convincing actually, but reckon 'dress' would be possible - worn by both, not in the sense of 'a' dress, but in the sense of 'dress' as a style of clothing - formal dress, casual dress etc. OTOH I'm not sure the '2' refers to the answer to clue 2.
have we still not got 20? [puzzled emoticon]

foundintranslation · 17/11/2005 20:38

doh of course we haven't . Was in bed at 11 last night and up at 3.30am...

starlover · 17/11/2005 20:40

i think it's jeans... defintiely

starlover · 17/11/2005 20:42

would go with pork pie too

aloha · 17/11/2005 20:42

Definitely jeans, vest and pork pie. Definitely.
No idea re question 20.

Mercy · 17/11/2005 21:03

WigWamBam- great minds and all that! I loved that era - it really changed my life

Lonelymum · 17/11/2005 22:12

I hate to say this, but I am quite familiar with the word spencer to mean ladies' undergarment, but then I am an historian and you know what it is like when you know something and assume everyone does too? Anyway, unless anyone comes up with anything better for that clue, I am quite happy with that answer. The embarking one is driving me potty though!

MrsMills · 17/11/2005 22:20

no 20 - Garter!!!

MrsMills · 17/11/2005 22:21

I mean garters

HRHQoQ · 17/11/2005 22:25

why garters???

I don't see how you've got it???
