Am I the only person under 40 who listens to the Archers?

Feeling inspired tonight (nothing too deep, though!). Anyway, I often wonder, on a Sunday morning when listening to the omnibus edition of the Archers, if I am the only one of my generation (30-ish) who listens. I love it, and have been listening for 15 years, since I lived in France, and was missing Corrie, Eastenders etc. It was the only soap available to me (well, in English, anyway!). My mum used to listen, but now she's gone, I have no-one to gossip about it with, and that's half the fun of soaps - talking about them at work the next day. I think if I went into work and said "Ruth's pregnant, isn't it great!" I'd get some funny looks.
I'm hoping to find someone here who listens.

I really do need to get out more - I mean December afternoon!!

Clarinet60 · 19/03/2003 12:14

Back to ruth again.
I heard her offering to do the milking out of the blue the other day.
What does she do with the baby? I have to make an appointment to have a bath. It's so unrealistic. I know she's got Jill, but not 24/7, surely?
(MUST get a life........)

elliott · 19/03/2003 12:17

I thought milking happened at some ungodly hour when even one year olds might be asleep - and presumably deevid would be having a (relative) lie-in?
But yes, Ben must be the least disruptive baby ever invented - funny how he always gurgles quietly enough for people to carry on their conversations as normal!

bundle · 19/03/2003 12:24

none of the Archers children have ever:
teethed
projectile vomited
had a dicky fit in the corner shop
screamed "I want to wear the Barbie sandals" when it's p***g down outside in mid-December

all very unrealistic.
Kenton's very annoying too.

zebra · 19/03/2003 12:58

So who thinks Debbie is gonna come up HIV positive?

Clarinet60 · 19/03/2003 17:35

elliott, perhaps you're right. My DH milks at a reasonable time and the children are up and about. Perhaps it's just him. Gawd, imagine getting up before even kids surface to do that. The woman's barking.

hmb · 19/03/2003 17:52

Bundle

I detest Kenton. He wants a damn good slapping. Evertime he moans on about how much he misses his kid, I yell at the radio, 'And you wouldn't have lost her if you hadn't been such a useless tosser. Do the words child support mean anything to you'.

Not that I take the Archers too seriously you understand.

tomps · 23/03/2003 21:53

not been listening closely enough lately. Where did Adam pop up from ? Have we ever heard of him before ?

Frieda · 23/03/2003 22:27

Tomps ? Adam is Debbie's long-lost brother, or perhaps half-brother (Jennifer's spawn from Roger Daltrey or someone) from a long gone era who's been conveniently farming in South Africa for as long as most of us can remember. Do hope Debbie's not HIV ? feel it would be extremely unlikely unless the dreaded Slimon's net has been spread yet wider than the few sheltered Felpersham University students we've heard about plus the vice-chancellor's wife. But I suppose they're short of a heartwrenching storyline since Shovehorn shoved off, so it might be in the offing. (Either that, or nasty Elizabeth's heart condition is going to rear its ugly head again).

bundle · 24/03/2003 17:09

hmb, maybe Kenton has met his match now he's the new Daphne in the caff....and he'll certainly have met his match in moaning old Jack
I think they might go with something like hepatitis C for Debbie, so they can do one of those health promotion tie-ins

We have far too much in common! just noticed this thread - I'm addicted to the archers although v busy and don't catch them all - sundays cooking lunch listening to the omnibus - pure bliss!

Kenton is such a drip don't you feel a bit sorry for him? I get annoyed by Lizzie - she's such a cow!

bells2 · 24/03/2003 17:36

Yes that's what I thought Bundle, that or Chlamydia. Kenton is clearly going to have an almightly clash over the running of Daphne's given that the whole point of Jack buying it was not to change it while Kenton is clearly bursting with bright ideas. I am missing the Brian / Siobhan thing as it has gone a bit dull lately.

bundle · 24/03/2003 17:59

oh yes, bells2 chlamydia would be a good one.
I loved the little ELizabeth spat re: Siobhan's stuff being sent onto her in Ireland...brought it all back
NO Seahorse - I don't feel sorry for Kenton! I love it when it all falls apart for him

hmb · 24/03/2003 18:02

My Money is on clamydia for Debbie.

Seahorse, yet more in common! I listen at 7.00 and the kids got to bed at 6.59

Lizzie I could slap all day long without my arm getting tired! The other one is Kate Aldridge, now she realy gets on my nerves.

Sad, I should try to get out more

bundle · 24/03/2003 18:22

how does Nigel put up with her?? I'll be thinking of you at 6.59 (dh does bath, story, bedtime while I pootle in kitchen tuned in )

bundle · 24/03/2003 18:27

Frieda - Roger Daltrey (or maybe even John Nettles )

hmb · 24/03/2003 19:20

Kenton is going to blow it again, and Jack will have to bail him out.

Elizabeth is going to go man when she hears that they are going to see Woodbine cottage, and with any luck she will have a heart attach and die, leaving Nigel free to marry the sterile (from the clamidia) Debbie. Woobine cottage will be bought by a amazingly good looking single man who will rush Usha off her feet (not heard from her in a while).

Mrs A is going to pop her clogs and leave her house to Roy and the Sainted Hailey.

We should start a new thread. Why I should get out more and try to get a life!!

seahorse · 24/03/2003 20:17

Just Interested - do any of you also read Joanne Trollope novels, observer on Sunday, buy Boden clothes (children only), lust after Jigsaw clothes, closest girl friends your old 1980's uni mates you lived your best years with - luckily this is the only place you can own up to such middle classesque things - would never openly admit any of this to 'new' friends - am making a mental note to try very hard to be more trendy and not give in to these urges.

hmb · 24/03/2003 20:36

Yes to the trollop (not a sentence I ever thought I would write). I read a lot, and normally have about 4 books on the go at one time. No to the Observer, I'm a Sunday Times girl. I'm married to me best mate, who I met in collage in 1980. We keep up with lots of friends from then, and also the people we have met moving round the UK these last 15 years. Not much interested in clothes, but spend a vast amount on books, music, tapes, and DVDs. I love classical music, but work out to 70/80s punk and heavy metal. And I'm doing a PGCE at the moment (in my extensive free time ) I love to cook, I'd love to wake up 2 stone lighter, but can't be a* to do any thing about it. And when the kids are in bed, I indulge in a glass of white wine.

My Name is HMB, and I'm addicted to Mumsnet!

seahorse · 24/03/2003 20:51

not much else to do in the evenings now we have a sex free life!
I'm v young of course - left uni in 1991 - still hanker after my reading festival days..- blur, pulp, radiohead all fantastic - felt very old when I found out the lead singer of coldplay is only about 24 or so. Can't really go with the classical music thing despite having music A level - mind you studying Britten operas is enough to put any one off for life - love Beethoven & Mozart though and Chopin piano preludes. On work aviodance at the moment though - can you tell - my intray is bulging and have achieved zilch today. Must chant my mantra of no work done - no money for hols and new car etc.

zebra · 24/03/2003 21:29

I only started listening to Archers because a friend (then aged 23, this is in 1992 when I was 26 or so) was such an addict.

hmb · 25/03/2003 06:29

Seahorse,, I gave up sex for lent this year! An easy one to keep.

I feel like the old grannie in this conversation, and realise that as I am 40 I shouldn't have contributed to this thread at all But I did start listening when I was about 22, and I've been an addict ever since. I even have a script signed by Davis Archer! How sad it that? In my favour, he was selling his old scripts to raise money for the NCPCC, so that made me feel a bit better.

bundle · 25/03/2003 11:56

never read any Trollope, but read the Observer (mainly shiny bits, review section) by about Wednesday, I THINK about buying Boden clothes for all of us but never get round to it and raid Gap sales instead for dd, used to lust after Jigsaw clothes till my hips got too big, closest girl friends are work/babyfriends, dh gets lots of free cd's from work (mainly classical, jazz), I love reading classics (just don't have the attention span now pregnant) and thrillers - oh and trashy showbiz mags.

bundle · 25/03/2003 11:57

..oh and I missed last night's thanks to Piccadilly line

emsiewill · 25/03/2003 18:43

Let me once again give a plug for The Archers website where you can listen to any episode you have missed in the last week, or read a synopsis of episodes further back. This has really revolutionised my life - now I can listen when it's more convenient for me.
