Am I the only person under 40 who listens to the Archers?

Feeling inspired tonight (nothing too deep, though!). Anyway, I often wonder, on a Sunday morning when listening to the omnibus edition of the Archers, if I am the only one of my generation (30-ish) who listens. I love it, and have been listening for 15 years, since I lived in France, and was missing Corrie, Eastenders etc. It was the only soap available to me (well, in English, anyway!). My mum used to listen, but now she's gone, I have no-one to gossip about it with, and that's half the fun of soaps - talking about them at work the next day. I think if I went into work and said "Ruth's pregnant, isn't it great!" I'd get some funny looks.
I'm hoping to find someone here who listens.

Don't want to sound naive but what's ketameen?

But we love the Archers and anyone who says against doesn't know what they're missing.

bea · 09/05/2002 08:50

it's a horse tranquilizer... me thinks alistair is going to be in the s**t!! due to him being a vet and also allowing Dross to practise at his place!! ha! ha! good! something to make Shula stop worrying about 'Oh Daniel!' - this will cause a minor scandal!!! hoorrahhh!!!

it's funny although i listen to the archers quite avidly... i don;t really like any of the characters... except maybe Hayley!

Carolann · 11/05/2002 23:47

I've been listening to the Archer's regularly now for 26 years and I think I remember somthing about Sid Perks being a bad boy. He came from Birmingham and I'm sure Jack Wooley knew all about it. But that is all I can recall. This could be why he is so scared of the police.

I'm still sorry his first wife Polly died. She was a much better character than his other wives and he doesn't mention her once!

Can anyone else remember any of this?

Cairistiona · 12/05/2002 11:56

I can't believe so many
Archers fans have come out the closet. It's like an alternative AA - My name is * And I listen to the archers!

In the family tree everyone seems to have forgotten Lilian (she of the ransom strip) - sister of J & T.

My predicition - Kenton will stir stuff up about S&B and then something v dodgy will emerge about Mel and the baby and the inconsistent stories and he will flee out of the plot in disgrace as usual until he is needed to stir up some other can of worms.

Re likeable characters - surely everyone likes Clarry? And what has happened to Usha (sp?) did she leave the cast when I was otherwise occupied?re

janh · 12/05/2002 17:54

Usha is still about, just hasn't been in it lately - she is referred to from time to time and took Ruth for a posh haircut not long before she had Ben.

If the police stitch Alistair up I'm sure she'll be there!

Re likeable characters - Mrs Antrobus is quite popular, also Betty, and Fallon is OK. (And an amazing number of women are still charmed by Brian despite his peccadilloes - do you remember how funny he was when Lilian came back with Scoddy, and when she had her facelift?)

And Kenton is definitely up to something!!!

Rosy · 24/05/2002 10:56

Janh - are you the Doyenne? (Seriously quiet at work, and have therefore strayed from Mumsnet).

Dh's been working really late recently, so haven't really listened to TA properly for about two weeks now. Grrrr!

janh · 24/05/2002 15:52

Rosy, crossing message boards feels a bit illicit, like pretending to be someone else...not sure of the etiquette here!

Rosy · 24/05/2002 16:18

You're right, we'll just leave it at that then! (Though presumably you haven't created a new personality for yourself in either location, so in theory there shouldn't be any problem). Suffice to say, anyway, that I've got more chance of meeting you at a mumsnet meet up than at a TA conference.

janh · 24/05/2002 19:29

mmm - not actually likely to turn up at either!
How are you, these days, Rosy? Are you looking forward a bit now?

Rosy · 27/05/2002 14:14

Well, I went through a few scary months there for a bit, but I think I'm over the worst now. Though not a day goes by when I don't think about everything that happened. I might post more about it later. Thanks for asking, anyway - it's nice to know people are thinking about you.

janh · 27/05/2002 16:07

Rosy, I imagine there won't be a single day for the rest of your life when some of it doesn't go through your mind. Little Rosy will always be there. But I'm glad to hear you are coming out of the worst.
Did you sponsor a third world child in the end? I thought that was such a nice idea.

Rosy · 30/05/2002 11:36

Hi Jan. Yes, after Xmas we started sponsoring a girl in Mozambique through Action Aid. (The money in fact goes to a community, and the child that you sponsor is in effect a "representative" of that community. This aspect appealed to me, also the fact that they lobby for change in the regions they work in). To be honest, after I'd got the bumph through, I'd not been able to bring myself to read it, given the associations. But last night, thanks to your reminder, I read it all and feel really positive about it. I felt slightly uncomfortable about the fact that somebody in a less fortunate position than me might feel they "owe" me something, so was not keen to make direct contact. But the literature said that they'd be interested to hear about our lives, so I'm going to send a postcard. So thanks for motivating me to get interested in this again! R.

Rosy · 30/05/2002 11:37

BTW, apologies to anyone wanting to hear the latest chat on the Archers!

Enid · 30/05/2002 12:00

Rosy, I was originally interested in Archers chat, but it got me thinking about you and it would be great if you ever felt like posting something about how you felt/coped afterwards, only if you felt like it of course.

xx E

anyone tune in last night? (Mon 2nd Dec) I missed the end because I had to see to dd (conjunctivitis, a bit coldy, feeling sorry for herself) and dh says someone at the end was talking re: confronting someone...I'm assuming this was Debbie again, and not Jennifer...dh has become mildly interested, but not enough for instant voice/plot recognition! I can't listen this afternoon as I have a midwife's appt and I'm sure someone out there can help before the Sunday omnibus!

KeepingMum · 03/12/2002 09:14

Hi bundle, I must have only been half listening but I think it must have been Debbie and Jennifer talking about Debbie's discussion with her solicitor. The solicitor is going to write to Simon and see if he will admit to adultery and then there can be a quickie divorce, I guess the confrontation thing was if he decides to deny it. Hopefully someone else had both ears on the job. Hope dd's eyes get better soon

bells2 · 03/12/2002 09:40

Yup it was Debbie talking to her solicitor - she wanted to name the woman in her divorce petition although she was persuaded against it. She then spoke to Jennifer about how they had to get Simon to admit to the adultery for the divorce to go ahead straight away.

bundle · 03/12/2002 11:23

thanks!

Xanthe · 03/12/2002 22:30

I can't let the revival of the Archers thread pass me by without a comment! I found the episode this evening in which Brian and Siobhan discussed Simon's adultery and how devastated Debbie was rather poignant. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I'm longing to know when the two of them will be found out. Will Simon now spill the beans as some kind of vengeance? All rather sordid. I'm beginning to find Siobhan extremely irritating and just wish the writers would bring this particular storyline to some sort of conclusion..

janh · 03/12/2002 22:57

Xanthe, there is a hint in the RT that it will all spill out the weekend after next (although, knowing how these things have gone before, what spills might still be something completely diferent!)

Ha ha ha!!!!

bundle · 04/12/2002 12:04

Xanthe, I'm surprised it's taken you this long to find Siobhan repellent
sobernow, then Ruth will appear from behind another pine and say "ohhhhhhhhh nooooooooooooooh"

hmb · 04/12/2002 12:45

I think that Roof is going to pop her clogs, and that David and Debbie will bet it together.

Xanthe · 04/12/2002 12:58

You've all made me laugh on a dull and dreary November afternoon! From your comments it definitely seems that 'Shoveawn' should be renamed 'Shoveoff'. I await the weekend after next's episodes with eager anticipation... (Must get a life).
