My mum is getting married

My mum is marrying my wonderful step-father next Friday - very, very happy about this. (Already refer to him as step-dad - they have been together 15 years.)

They are referring to it as a technical adjustment - so it's not all romantic or anything! It's just going to be the 2 of them, me, DP, DD, my sister, step-brother and step-sister and my mums youngest, closest brother and his lovely wife.

We're doing the registry thing and then going to F&M for tea. Would be home by 7pm.

I asked my mum what her plans where that night and she said that my DD would be ready for bed so we'll just all go home and have a cup of tea.

I thought I'd treat them to a night in a hotel in London. I thought the Charlotte Street Hotel of Blakes?

I'm also going to do it as a surprise. Nick a pair of her knickers & his pants (!), and get them a toothbrush and a few of the overnight essentials and then just hand them over at the end and say right, here's the address of where you're staying tonight.

So a) what do you think and b) any other suggestions on where I should book them into?

I can't stretch to more than £250 for the room for a night.
Step-father likes v modern, Mum likes places like the Lanesborough and the Bath Spa Hotel etc etc
It's for next Friday and want it to be London as that's where we'll be already.

Thomcat
Congratulations coming your families way.
I think that is a lovely start to a long and happy marriageand a lovely idea

ThomCat · 02/10/2003 17:52

Aww, thanks Doormat. I'm just so thrilled he'll officially be my step-father. I just adore the man. Not to say that I don't adore my real dad (he's one of my best friends), just really, really love my step-father too.
ohh, I'm so excited about it!

Hope you all have a very special day

Janstar · 02/10/2003 18:36

Lovely!

Don't forget to check if they have any medicines they might need for overnight. A little thing like that could ruin it all.

aloha · 02/10/2003 18:38

What a fantastic, kind and generous gift Thomcat. They will be so thrilled. I would be! Make them up a really nice overnight bag - could you pack a few more clothes though? After a wedding and tea with your cheeky monkey she might be covered in chocolate! Ask what she'll be wearing for the wedding and pack something like another top for her so she doesn't feel too shabby having breakfast at a posh hotel! Think your hotel choices sound spot on. Blakes is sexy and romantic but I really like the Charlotte Street hotel and that nice on in Covent Garden. Which register office will they be at?

aloha · 02/10/2003 18:39

Will she have flowers for her wedding? If she doesn't plan to, surprise her with a bouquet from Paula Pryke or someone (Liberty do fantastic bouquets already made up). Someone did this for me and I thought it was lovely.

aloha · 02/10/2003 18:40

You could arrange for champagne in their room too.

Thomcat they might not think it's romantic but it is really. My ant and uncle got married last year after 20 years together and it was really really lovely - just family and a few friends in a registry office then home afterwards. They played "If you don't know me by now" during the signing and it was a wonderful relaxed day.

janh · 02/10/2003 19:02

Thomcat, before you book it - and it is the sweetest idea, what a lovely and generous daughter you are - are you absolutely sure that they really are coming back for a cup of tea and haven't actually planned a secret honeymoon? Or that your lovely stepdad might have, and she doesn't know about it?

Can you check with your uncle or the steps, or even your stepdad? But without letting on what you have in mind, obviously! Tricky one...

motherinferior · 02/10/2003 19:03

Oh, that's sooooo lovely. How very exciting, too.

Hey, can you brief my girls for future years ?

CountessDracula · 02/10/2003 19:12

How lovely Thomcat

Claridges of course....

sunchowder · 02/10/2003 20:07

Sounds great Thomcat, lovely fruit and some champagne and chocolates for the room would top it off beautifully. If you are worried about clothing, you can arrange for pre-paid breakfast in the room maybe? Good thought Janstar on medications they might need and JanH if they have "secret" plansif you have forgotten something you can always offer to drive back to their home and drop off anything at the hotel for later, maybe DH can do that?? It is a wonderful surprisegood daughter you!

TC we stayed the night at Blakes hotel in Kensington after our wedding and it was fantastic. We had an antique Japanese styled room, and instead of eating in the restaurant with everyone else we had dinner in our room. Everything about the place was amazing. And even better that the bill was paid by someone else,so we could really feel relaxed. It was over £300 in 1995 though.

I hope your mum realises what a lovely daughter she has!

lou33 · 02/10/2003 20:13

Forgot to add they had a bottle of bubbly in the room foc.

ThomCat · 06/10/2003 16:12

Thanks Girls - well it came down to availability - I really wanted to do Blakes but they only had a suite left at £895!!! Bit above my budget. So booked the Savoy in the end. We'll be in Fortnum?s having tea so it'll be easy for them to get to and right up my Mums street. Step-father would have preferred Blakes I think but maybe there's an anniversary present in the waiting!

The Savoy were lovely. I told the lady on the bookings desk to make sure any relevant staff new that they would have just got married and explained it was a surprise etc and she was so sweet, saying what a lovely daughter I was etc and she said that she would put them down for an upgrade!!!!! How nice is that!!!

God I feel sick with the excitement of it all. I want to run home now and start packing overnight bags for them. I was going to do the real basics but will try and steal as much as possible from their room when I pick Lottie up this week and the rest I'll buy new of take from my house! I just can't wait.

Lol at you knicking your Mums pants illicitly.

ThomCat · 06/10/2003 16:22

If you think that's funny - imagine me rummaging through my STEPFATHERS pant drawer!!!!!!!! AND if memory serves me right from my living at home days he wears Y-fronts!!! OMG! Still, love is blind right??!!!

Thomcat what fun! Can't wait to hear what they think of their surprise!

One thing you could do that my mum's best friend did on her wedding day that she adored, gave her a pressie and said she had to open it in bed with her husband to be on the morning of the wedding. She had bought some beautiful knickers and put lots of confetti inside them so that when mum shook them out they were both covered in it!

ThomCat · 06/10/2003 16:31

Yes that's a good idea, I could just fill their overnightbags with confetti couldn't I! Thanks Drac! xx

Silk Rose Petals would be even more romantic!!

janh · 06/10/2003 20:29

My niece had semi-dried flower petals at her wedding recently - pot pourri for the undies?

Sounds wonderful, TC.

motherinferior · 07/10/2003 15:30

Oh, how exciting for all of us!

ThomCat · 07/10/2003 15:31
