Does your DH/DP read books?

I love reading and can't understand why DH doesn't.
He will happily read a newspaper and various types of non-fiction (travel, politics, environmental issues, history etc) but I don't think I've ever seen him read a novel in the ten plus years we've been together.
Anyone else's DH/DP like this?

my dh only started reading when we moved in together. I am such a good influence .

Think some people are just not that into story-telling. Does he like films or TV dramas?

colditz · 09/11/2005 12:45

Mine won't either, but I hate him at the moment so not a good answer anyway!

ninah · 09/11/2005 12:46

nope
total philistine who worships at the shrine of Mammon

tarantula · 09/11/2005 12:49

No my dp doesnt read at all. Will sometimes read the paper but thats about it. Doesnt really do non fiction either and def never RTFM when he buys anything new (that seems to be another man thing)

Gobbledigook · 09/11/2005 12:49

Yes, hundreds - he is ALWAYS reading. he has THE most ridiculous amount of books.

Gobbledigook · 09/11/2005 12:50

I'm the one that doesn;t but then I don't have the spare time that he does as I'm often working in the evenings

puddle · 09/11/2005 12:51

Mine won't read novels but he does like poetry. He is the only person I know who has read joyce's Ulysses though.

northerner · 09/11/2005 12:53

Nope, mine doesn't. He reads books about sport mainly golf. But they have to be big and shiny and have lots of pictures.

Never known him read a novel. He hates watching the enws too

binkie · 09/11/2005 12:53

he reads & reads & reads, & accretes books in heaps. But has the bizarrest prejudice which is that our main (only) big room should only have pictures & not bookshelves. Thereby the heaps.

expatinscotland · 09/11/2005 12:54

No. He has severe dyslexia.

puddle · 09/11/2005 12:54

lol binkie my dp doesn't want bookshelves in the living room either. All my books are in piles upstairs or in cupboards.

Mercy · 09/11/2005 12:55

CarolinaMoon

Yes he does enjoy watching films and a few TV dramas, but on the whole he prefers documentaries.

Dh and I both read loads of novels on hols. At home its car magazines, news magazines, which, and newspapers - tons of them!
I can rarely concentrate on a novel at home.

NomDePlume · 09/11/2005 13:03

DH is a real bookworm, we both are.

Me too hausfrau (fast reader). DH says I don't really read them, I just pretend to . Cheeky sod. I get through 2/3 books to every one he reads (on average)

MrsFogi · 09/11/2005 16:11

My dh insists on reading the end of books first which drives me mad.

sharklet · 09/11/2005 16:12

DH loves books but reads very slowly. He gets very frustrated with me - who reads so fast, I devour books.

munz · 09/11/2005 16:14

yes loves them chris ryan, andy mcnab, terry pratchet, james herbert.

he'll start a book and have it finished within about 3 days

jayzmummy · 09/11/2005 16:18

No. DH has severe dyslexia caused by his brain injury...pre accident he was a real bookworm and loved all books. I think he gets quite saddened that he can no longer pick up a good read...although he does try.

Between us we are hopeless with reading and writing....thank goodness for story tapes.

Mercy · 09/11/2005 16:37

Sorry to hear that jayzmummy. As you say, thank goodness for story tapes.
The grandmother of a friend of mine lost her sight and enjoyed listening to these too (she also recorded music for her so her grandmother could learn new tunes on the piano!)

Lizzylou · 09/11/2005 16:40

No, I have tried in vain to find books which he will find interesting hoping to spark a love of reading...to no avail. Our first holiday together was a nightmare, me trying to get through my 6 books whilst sunbathing, him nagging for me to come and play "headers" with him in the pool like a 10 year old!

ThomCat · 09/11/2005 16:40

He doesn't really read novels and stuff, he reads books on:
the histroy of dance culture
anything to do with dance / house music
anything to do with clubbibng or Ibiza or DJs etc
computer manuals
books on magic
books on froints or graphics

Every now and then he mioght read a Spike Millagn book or the Henry Root letters etc. nd he's read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galazy, Catch 22 etc.

CarolinaMoon · 09/11/2005 16:44

how for your dh, jayzmummy.

Binkie, that is strange. Haven't met many bookworms who don't like being surrounded by their books. I have always wanted to live in a house with whole walls covered in bookshelves - sadly haven't got there yet (have discovered libraries instead!).

Hazellnut · 09/11/2005 16:46

He does and then he doesn't !! He'll go through book reading phases and then paper reading phases. Mostly likes Sharpe/Flashman type books. Am always looking for ideas for him.... I love reading too !!
