Yay!

Its not a new engagement - he asked me Christmas about 8 years ago now! We kept putting off setting a date because of buying a house, and then not being too old to have kids etc etc which suited us both.

Anyway - we wanted to do it before DD went to school so we had the same surname and now we are.

The tough bit is that we have got a REALLY tight budget (nowhere near what the alleged national "average" cost of a wedding is). But we still want it to be a bit special (not just a slash and dash in gretna green affair).

We want:

A civil ceremony.
I would like to have a "traditional" dress though along with the bridesmaids dresses (although these i am hoping family members can make for us if we buy material).
The reception - it would be nice if we could have at least a small number of people for a sit down meal followed by buffet reception after.
A proper honeymoon (the traditional 5 day one is fine by us).?

Does ANYONE have any tips, ideas or suggestions for cost saving? Plus any nice (cheapish) UK honeymoon destinations?

TIA!

Just in case you hadn't realised, I'll be changing back to my usual name of Satine later today! Look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, do collect pictures of flowers, bouquets or styles you like from magazines, the internet etc as it's really helpful to show what sort of thing you're after and the style you like.

QueenVictoria · 01/11/2005 11:58

Thanks Satine (wouldnt have been able to work that out - im not good at this name change malarky!) Am going to do some shameless magazine buying today

Congratulations QV!!

We got married last year when DD was 10 weeks old. We did it on a budget because we had little baby and couldn?t justify spending a ton of cash!

Our saving tips were:

I got my Dress from Monsoon on Boxing Day I the sales ? it was 70% off. I got the dress and a matching stole for £50.00. So look out in the sales and also on ebay or in charity shops ? A wedding dress company near us closed up shop just before my wedding and they donated all their stock to our local charity shop ? gorgeous dresses worth 100?s for £50.00 a piece.

We did our own wedding favours. Netting with sugared almonds wrapped up in ribbon. Cost a fraction.

We had our reception in our local village hall. Cost us £32 to hire. Which also gave us chair, tables and the like. Ours was in the summer so we got to use the outdoors too as it has a playground and playing field attached which meant we didn?t have to worry about entertainment for the kids, or smokers.

My brother in law is in a band ? just for a laugh really ? and their first gig was our wedding reception we paid them £60 (they wouldn?t accept more) and they bought themselves a new amp with the proceeds. We made ourselves CD?s of the music we wanted to play for the rest of the meal and the band?s breaks which we played over their sound system ? so we didn?t need to hire anything.

I made my bouquet. And we made our table settings out of pillar candles stuck into terracotts plant pots with flowers around them. They looked lovely. We did get the ladies from the WI to do our flowers for the church but they gave us the flowers as a gift ? bless them. We used some to decorate the village hall after the ceremony. We bought the candles and stuff form a £1.00 shop. I also made all the button holes.

We invited the local pub to provide a bar for the reception. All it cost us was the price of thie licence which was £25.00.

We bought our toasting wine and wine for the meal from Majestic wine warehouse and got it for next to nothing.

My mum bought the bridesmaids dresses, but she got them in the sales and paid about £40 total.

We borrowed a car from a friends to drive to the church. It was an old Morris Minor ? very cool.

We got a local lady to do our catering and got her to do us a buffet. It was lovely. Some friends of ours got married and made some buffet food themselves and then asked all the guests to bring their favourite dish. We did that for our reception party in the USA (my DH is American so we had one there too) It worked really well and people thought it was cool.

Our familes pitched in and helped with cleaning up and preparing the reception venue.

Our honeymoon was in a goreous holiday cottage in The Forsest of Dean. It was next to my favourite castle and had a spiral staircase. Its call Y Crwys in Goodrich if your interested.

Verr very best of luck with it. You don?t have to spend a fortune to have a wonderful day. Remember to stop and look around and enjoy it all as well.

Good luck.

Congratulations - I hope you have lots of fun planning this and on the big day too.

We saved pennies, by;

Getting our wedding rings off the internet - went into a jewellery store and chose the rings we'd liked got all the measurements etc and then searched on line and bought them that way saved about 400 quid!!!

Made the invites, thank you cards and gift list cards myself

Bought my wedding dress from a warehouse and the bridesmaid dresses where evening dresses bought in the jan sales, and made the bridesmaids capes with my MIL (got married in feb in the snow).

Wedding favours were love hearts sprinkled on the table, and kiddies name places where large shop bought cookies with names iced on them - actually you could do that for place names and favours combined!!

Hired DJ's for the boys and bought waistcoats in the sales for them all, and made DH's god son's waist coat myself.

Honeymoon cost 240 quid stayed in a cottage in Fort William and got snowed in heaven!!

Look forward to hearing what you do do.

My sister and I both did our own flowers - went to Covent Garden v early (having done a recce already) the day before and bought buckets of gorgeous flowers for so much less than in flower shop. Great fun outing too - almost like part of the wedding celebrations. Then we got a group of friends/aunts etc to put them all together on the day before and had a good old girls gossip. Mine were in flowerpots sprayed silver and sis' were in a ring of oasis with candles from ikea in the middle. I also had v cheap tealight holders from ikea which I painted with glass paints.

QueenVictoria · 01/11/2005 22:22

Thanks wilbur, sharklet and harizeb!

I know that things like flowers and invites can be vastly overpriced if done by "professionals". Im not very arty though. Id hate to muck it up - you dont get a rehearsal as such! (might go post a pleading "teach me" thread on the arts n crafts section ).

Did doing the flowers not take up too much time, what with everything else to organise sharklet and wilbur?

Like the idea of cookie name places!

QV - with the Euros as presents thing - a couple of family members said they were going to give us money and we asked if they could give us Euros as spends for our honeymoon - we didn't actually ask for money but I think if certain people (close family only) had asked we might have said money.

We made our own favours, too - there's loads you can do apart from the traditional with favours if you use your imagination.

It's definitely possible to have a wedding at well below the "average cost" that still has style and doesn't look like you cut corners.

I was once bridesmaid for a very old friend and she asked me to pay for my shoes, which were horrid, pale pink, matched the horrid dress she made me wear, and which I would never ever wear again. Please don't do that.

QueenVictoria · 01/11/2005 23:46

Ha ha! No, helsy, i dont think i'll be doing that!

I was helloween, by the way. Have you made any progress? Got a date? Or have I just not read the thread properly?

QueenVictoria · 02/11/2005 09:42

Well my DP wants to do it THIS Feb/March . i dont think i will be able to do anything that quick - i want this time next year - ive got a couple of venues to ring so i guess it will depend upon their availability in the end.

QV - no the flowers didn't take long and we really enjoyed doing them - 15 or so table centres plus 2 big arrangements for the church and for me a few pew ends took about 3 hours in all. We are certainly not flower arrangers at all (if I ever get a bouquet it looks like I have thrown them in the vase from a great distance ) but we chose v simple centrepiece ideas which I got from a wedding mag and they looked fab. Also, it's amazing how many people are keen to help if you ask them and turn out to have all sorts of useful skills and ideas. People LOVE being involved in a wedding (I know I do) so ask around and you might find some closet flower arrangers to help you out.

wilbur · 02/11/2005 09:50

Also if you get lots of greenery from your garden or wherever, you can get away with fewer, flashier flowers and it still looks wonderful.

QueenVictoria · 02/11/2005 09:52

Ta Wilbur. LOL at "closet flower arrangers"

Will definitely go out today and buy some magazines (didnt get a chance to yesterday!)

Must post that plead on arts and crafts too....

Congratulations! we had a very cheap wedding 2 years ago :

venue: register office with a nice room and garden, 3 course meal for 25 in a local pub in a private room (with menu choice), cost about £25 per head including wine, no charge for room which we had for about 4 hours

drink: bought champagne on offer in the supermarket for a toast at home

cake: Marks & Spencer £25

invites: made them ourselves

photos: got the guests to take them and send us duplicate disks and bought disposables for the children

cars: hired local taxis for £40 or so (though that was a bit of a disaster)

flowers: bought lots of Ikea vases and flowers from the market for the lunch table, and button holes from a local florist, cost about £60 for the lot

clothes: bought my outfit and shoes in the sales, cost much less than DH's suit, also bought in the sales

QueenVictoria · 02/11/2005 22:15

thanks mil! Thats the about the right price im looking for!

Hi there,
Am getting married on Saturday and we had to keep the cost down. As people have said let people help. My sister did the invites, DP's Dad paid for the flowers. My dress design is actually a bridesmaid pattern that are soooo much cheaper than brides. For favours we have indoor sparklers, a nod to Guy Fawkes. Found Hitched.com was good for cameras etc. Hope everything goes well.

jayzmummy · 03/11/2005 08:58

QV....you would be inundated with offers if you posted a request for help on the Arts & Crafts board. Im more than happy to offer you help and advice about your invites....if you want??
