Me and dh have decided we want to move right away from London, and we both really like the idea of moving to St Ives. It seems really nice, but we don't know anything about the area at all. Does anyone live there (or nearby)? Could anyone let me know what it's actually like?

Hi we moved here 2 and a half years ago. The area is really lovely, you'll really notice the difference if you move here..we did! So much quieter than London, and a much slower pace of life!
If you need to know anything CAT me!!
xx

Bomper · 25/10/2005 08:53

I am really sorry, not very au fait with things like this. What does CAT me mean? Would love to know more, esp if flooding is a major problem. Thanks.

We lived very near there for three years. Its not too bad a place, nicer than nearby Huntingdon. Its also not far from Cambridge, peterborough etc, and just over an hour on the train into London. If i remember correctly it has a lot of take aways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It also has (or it did when we were there) a good market, can't remember what day it was though

myalias · 25/10/2005 14:46

I have lived here for years and love it. It's quite a large town which has a market on Mondays and Fridays. The town has a good sized sports centre and there is some good entertainment held in the Burgess hall ie.fashion shows, comedy nights and 80's nights. There is plenty to do in the evenings lots of nice restaurants and trendy bars. The downside is there are too many hairdressers, estate agents and banks and not enough good shops - Cambridge is just down the road for quality shops. As far as flooding goes there are areas which are prone to floods these are on the edge of Hemingford Grey and the town centre where the river ouse runs through it. The Environment Agency could send you plans as to which areas are more prevalent. There are some good schools in the area the best ones are Eastfield Infants and Westfield Juniors which are beacon status, as is the St.Ivo secondary school. It's only an hour away from London.

goldiilocks · 25/10/2005 16:46

Id recommend Wheatfields infants and junior schools, plus the burleigh hill playgroup is fabulous!
We have been here for over 3 years, and love the area! ( Although still have pangs to go back to London! But after our trip back at the weekend, i dont think id wanna go back!)

myalias · 25/10/2005 18:45

Goldiilocks my ds has just started Wheatfields infants and previously went to Burleigh Hill pre-school.

twirlaround · 25/10/2005 18:48

The Hemingfords are ultra swanky. St Ives has a drugs problem and can be violent at night.

Gem13 · 25/10/2005 18:54

One of the Hemingfords has thatched council houses. I think they are the only ones in the country!

St Ives has (maybe used to have) a fantastic wine shop. 'Off licence' doesn't do it justice.

Transport links (no train and few buses) were rubbish between St Ives and Cambridge.

We lived near Huntingdon 10 years ago. Don't know what the area is like now.

myalias · 25/10/2005 19:01

twirlaround you make it sound like the bronx.

twirlaround · 25/10/2005 19:31

Sorry, it's not like the Bronx at all, but there is certainly a significant heroin problem in St Ives & also in Huntingdon. If you don't go out at night because you are always at home with the kids obviously it's not so much of an issue.

It is also very pretty in the summer but pretty bleak in wintertime IMO.

twirlaround · 25/10/2005 19:37

There is a Waitrose and pilates classes with creche facility

I would definitely call it a small town though, not a large one. What is it that attracts you?

fisil · 25/10/2005 19:39

good school and sports facilities (or at least there was when I used to play hockey there 2 decades ago)

goldiilocks · 25/10/2005 20:07

I'd say the drug problem is less than what it is in London, its gradually spreading to everywhere now thou!

myalias - aah has he settled in ok?? Saw all the reception children when i went to dd's (she's in year 1)assembly last month. They looked so dinky, and scared!! Dd went to burleigh as well as ds at the moment! So i probably pass you each morning, lol!!

myalias · 25/10/2005 20:13

Hi goldiilocks Yes ds has settled in well he is really enjoying school. My ds had lovely mrs B for his keyworker at Burleigh. I probably know you

Bomper · 25/10/2005 20:16

Thanks for all the info. What attracted dh and me was that it was small and fairly 'countrified' without being totally out in the sticks. And basically, where we are now, though still thought of as the 'good' part of town is gradually getting worse and worse. We have a park at the end of our road, and we were so excited when we moved here, that we could stroll down there at any time with the kids, but the little car park is now being used to sell drugs and last summer we had prostitutes down there too. We just decided we wanted to go somewhere that would give our children a better chance in life.

myalias · 25/10/2005 20:23

Sam

goldiilocks · 25/10/2005 20:24

Bomper where are you living at the moment??
Thats why we moved here , to give the kids a better start! Also the hospital, gps and dentist service is soo much better up here!

goldiilocks · 25/10/2005 20:26

My dd1 is in the juniors in year 4!!
I find dr m a bit intimidating in the mornings when he does he rounds in the playground, but he's always been helpful etc when we have had probs! Have you just got the two children?? ( i must be the mad one, lol!)

Bomper · 25/10/2005 20:30

Am living in Bexleyheath, which is on the SE London/NW Kent Border. I just look at some of the teenagers hanging about and think I don't want mine to be living here when they reach that age. I'm not saying they are all axe-weilding homocidal maniacs, the majority of people round here a decent honest folk, but if I try to look to the future it worries me.

myalias · 25/10/2005 20:32

Yes only two - my ds1 is in year 5. What's your dd name - Sam might know her. Is your dd1 going to Scarborough next year? ds1 went this year and had a great time.
