Dh is off sick today and, while I was out, got a phone call from his boss to say 'sorry, we are making six or seven posts redundant including yours'. Oh f*ck.

I hate this tossy employers can chuck you out as soon as they feel like it sodding culture. Dh has been through this twice before; I went through a very painful and protracted redundancy that finally ended last year. Lept into the first job I could take which was a disaster and went freelance five months ago. Which is going OK so far, but we can't live on my three-day a week freelance (uncertain) earnings. Oh God.

Dh being very chin-up and constructive about it, bless him, but he's been working so hard for this damn company, creating all sorts of bloody fantastic stuff off his own back. Grrr.

Plus he has been applying for other jobs anyway and has been getting absolutely nowhere. F*ck.

Nothing constructive to say - am sure everything will be ok eventually, but that doesn't pay the bills - but just wanted to send you a hug. We went through this a while back and it is shit.

bossykate · 21/10/2005 17:55

sympathy this sucks. hope your dh finds something soon.

teeavee · 21/10/2005 17:56

dp pretty much in the shit workwise atm too - but I'm sure something will come up - for all of us! -eventually...

what are your monthly outgoings like?

Freckle · 21/10/2005 18:07

What are their reasons for redundancy? Do you believe it is a genuine one or are they just looking for an excuse to get rid of a few people?

lars · 21/10/2005 18:08

Hi edam, I have been made redundant also. Learned that I was to be made redundant then found out my ds was excluded from school next day.

But yes while this was a worry it was a sort of blessing in a strange sort of way.
As I really need a break and need to sort out my ds and my career.

As one door closes another one opens.
I think the main worry is financial but i am determined not to get too down about it. I t's sounds like your dh has alot of inner strength and sounds very creative and an asset to a future employer. larsx

jollymum · 21/10/2005 18:11

Hi, sorry to hear this. Is his the sort of career that he can step into another workplace fairly easily or is it, like around here, really hard to get work?

sis · 21/10/2005 18:18

Oh edam, I'm very sorry about this - when will he know for sure? or have they already given him notice?

Gobbledispook · 21/10/2005 18:42

Sorry to hear this edam - what a stressful time. I really hope he manages to find something soon.

edam · 21/10/2005 19:22

Hi everyone, sorry for not replying earlier computer crashed/ ds's tea called.

He's got a week's 'consultation period' ho bloody ho. We are on holiday next week so week after that will be his last one.

I think redundancy is probably genuine - it's not just him. But very odd that they are keeping his boss on. He works on a website linked to a magazine. Dh does all the creative stuff that is really useful and pulls off all the data the big bosses need. His boss just puts up the info and that's about it. So they are really going to miss dh. Not sure how easy he will find it to get another job, tbh, he's been applying anyway without success.

Lars, that really is sh1t. What an awful time for you.

Teeavee, fairly high outgoings - live in an expensive part of South East with good schools and fast commute. Have just employed a nanny due to problems with ds's nursery. And mortgage is just coming off fixed-rate period... guess we won't be able to switch to another lender now though, with me having just gone freelance and dh unemployed.

Sorry to hear this Edam. Very stressful.
Don't ever think you chance your mortgage though. Get a financial advisor to help you and I bet you can.
And he WILL get another job. We are bleeding money atm but it will get better. But I do sympathise. I absolutely DREAD this happening to dh.

edam · 21/10/2005 20:49

Well, if you hear of any jobs for web editors/web managers, Aloha...

OP posts:
aloha · 21/10/2005 20:50

I realise I typed absolute nonsense there! What happened??? I meant to write, 'don't think you can't change your mortgage'!
I will Edam, but I so rarely hear about anything these days.

aloha · 21/10/2005 20:51

There are employment agencies in London that specialise in this. I know because one approached me once. Soon realised I'd be rubbish at it!

edam · 21/10/2005 20:54

Can you remember any names, Aloha?

aloha · 21/10/2005 20:57

One was on Hanover Square...um.. I posted on another thread about being like a goldfish with Alzhemers...
Maybe try Google?

aloha · 21/10/2005 20:58

google internet recruitment and also recruitment internet agency

sickandtired · 21/10/2005 21:06

hmmmmm, ho ehave they slected his role to be made redundant - how can he be having a "consultaion" period if the decision has already been made?

The idea of a consultation period is to see if there are any ways to avoid the need for redundancy.

How big is the company?

(I used to make redundacies, its shit, but it should ALWAYS be fair!)

sunchowder · 21/10/2005 21:11

So sorry to hear this Edam....the unknown is so scarey. Lots of good advice here for you. I do hope it works out and that your DH will find something much better in the end. Thinking of you then.

HRHWickedwaterwitch · 21/10/2005 21:20

Sorry to read this edam.

edam · 21/10/2005 22:39

It is one of the very largest publishing companies in this country. Other jobs going relate to his website although different kinds of roles (not editorial).

Company always does this with redundancies - has a week-long 'consultation' period. Laughable. Isn't there some legal thing about they have to pretend to have a consultation?

tigermoth · 22/10/2005 07:34

Really sorry to hear this, edam - I know how stressful redundancies can be. Definity see a financial consultant about a new mortage deal - especially if you have equity in your house.

edam · 22/10/2005 09:21

Thanks Tigermoth. Dh woke at 5 this morning and has been on the net looking for job ads, bless him.
