quoted 3.5 grand for new boiler - does this sound right?

motherpeculiar · 12/10/2005 11:53

british gas have quoted us 3.5 grand to supply and fit a new condensing boiler (ISAR HE30) the price includes moving the boiler to another room (just below where it currently is so no big deal apparantly)

just wondered whether anyone knew whether this sounded about right?

also, do BG tend to do a good job or not? do they outsource to "cowboys"?

It sounds quite a lot to me (but what do I know!?). Would have thought BG would do a good job as they are a big well known company.

Sorry not much help!

OrribleOliveoil · 12/10/2005 11:57

my mum and dad recently had a new boiler and central heating fitted by BG and are v impressed. Good service, on time, tidy etc.

Not sure how much they paid, but they were told they couldn't get a grant (pensioners) as my dad's pension was 'too high'. That'll teach them to save .

I have just signed up to BG to cover our heating etc on a monthly cover, just feel better with a big company myself.

Dophus · 12/10/2005 11:59

Last year I had a combiboiler fitted by BG for 1500.

philippat · 12/10/2005 11:59

wouldn't personally pay that much without getting another couple of quotes...

LIZS · 12/10/2005 11:59

We had ours done about 6 years ago and it was a couple of grand iirc. They did use their own employees but they left loads of mess - bits of plaster and wires on the floor just where ds then crawling, could get at them - so wasn't very happy. We also had the radiators cleaned adn flushed, a few thermostatic valves fitted and a new hot water tank. It also included an annual service contract.

Friend of mine had a new boiler fitted last year (also by BG) £3000

foxinsocks · 12/10/2005 12:00

I think moving a boiler is quite time consuming - even if it is just below. We got some quotes for moving some pipework related to the boiler and I was amazed at how expensive it was. All the BG engineers we've had round here have been very good. Hopefully, you should get a good guarantee on your new boiler so you should be covered by them if anything goes wrong.

TrickorTwiglett · 12/10/2005 12:02

had a new boiler fitted in same place 7 years ago by a corgi registered plumber the whole thing cost a grand .. I think 3.5 is too much and would shop around

but would recommend their cover

Nemo666 · 12/10/2005 12:02

I think because they are moving boiler and also removing old one that would be about right.

BG have just charged my mum £300 to replace an ancient (and frankly dangerous) gas meter and relocate it to a box outside.

That boiler to buy is circa £750 here for example Get another quote if I were you.

butty · 12/10/2005 12:22

Hi, i have just recieved a grant from Eaga of £2700 and also paid £400 myself, but for £3100 i am getting brand new combi boiler with condenser to replace old boiler plus they are installing 8 brand new radiators and a thermostat to replace all the other old junk in my house. They are also ripping out my emersion tank.
I seriousley think that you should shop around!!!
PS: the people doing the work are contracted by EAGA and therefore must be registered and capable of doing a good job!!

It sounds ALPT to me. We had a large, reputable company in to do our boiler last year.

We had:-

new boiler, which was moved to a different place so needed new flues etc
new digital thermostat
couple of new radiators supply and fit (2, possibly 3 I think)

It cost us about £2500, possibly £3000 with the VAT.

sweetheart · 12/10/2005 12:28

Oh yes, they also removed our water tank thing!

maddiemo · 12/10/2005 12:42

Sounds too much. We had ours replaced three months ago. It had to be moved from wall cupboard to ground level, hole knoced in wall and new outlet pipe, old hole filled in.

They also lifted the upstairs floor in some places to lay new piping as central heating not working.

Cost £1750.

Shop around. What area are you in, maybe some one here can reccommend?

A friend had his done with BG - cost £2500 last year. A new boiler in B&Q costs about £500. Would consider that and get Corgi registered person to fit it. Think BG are a huge rip-off. Their whole campaign into frightening you to get their insurance because a call-out could cost hundres. Hmm, just like the insurance over a year or 2?

throckenholt · 12/10/2005 12:50

have you tried googling the boiler to see what it actually costs. We were loking at an oil condensing boiler - I think it was in the region of £1000 - so that would be something like £2500 for installation .

Tinker · 12/10/2005 12:53

They do all have to be condensing boilers now so a cheaper one would still comply.

LadyFioOfTipton · 12/10/2005 12:58

we had a baxi condenser combi boiler
12 rads all with induvidual thermostats
a hall thermostat
de scaler
and the whole thing plumbed in a four storey house for 3,800

british gas quoted 14k

the company we used were corgi registered and actually sub contracted to british gas anyway (but they were bone idle too!)

the cheapest qiote we had for a whole system with condenser combi was 2,600

so i think if i was anyone i would look around and see who you would trust. it doesnt always have to be the cheapest

Anteater · 12/10/2005 13:04

Firstly get a break down of the quote.
Labour
Boiler
Materials.

Get two more quotes with the same breakdowns and have a look.

Boilers are not mega exspensive, just bought a small combi for £450 plus VAT.
I suspect you will be paying £££ in labour, but its a plumbers market at the mo. If the boiler is gas your talking corgi reg installer and mega £££.
One way round is to get the boiler direct, (have a look at the ones that are being quoted for to find out the size and type required) Use a non corgi plumber (cheaper) to fit and then get the corgi man to check and sign off.

motherpeculiar · 12/10/2005 13:27

god - it does sound really expensive now (not that it didn't before, but I just thought that was what they cost iykwim)

I have a fully broken down quote - the boiler and installation cost 1,856. So we are paying almost 1100 for the installation as I have now seen them for 750 also. They reckon it will take two full days. The rest of the money is in dribs and drabs - pipes, new flue, new thermostat, radiator valves to control temp in different rooms (we prob don't really need these), a powerflush of the whole system etc etc

the thing is - we ALWAYS seem to have bad luck when we do anything to try to improve the house so that's why we are tempted to go the BG, big reputable company route.

However, will see if I can call in a few other quotes as we have until next Monday to cancel with BG (altho' they are due to come and do it next wednesday!)

thanks all

That's daylight robbery!!

We had ours replaced in March of this year and for £2,300 had 2 chaps install an all new dancing and singing boiler, digital thermostat, supply of all piping and a megaflow (pressurised water tank thing). They also took out the water tank in the roof and disposed of all the rubbish - the job took them 3 days.
