quoted 3.5 grand for new boiler - does this sound right?

british gas have quoted us 3.5 grand to supply and fit a new condensing boiler (ISAR HE30) the price includes moving the boiler to another room (just below where it currently is so no big deal apparantly)

just wondered whether anyone knew whether this sounded about right?

also, do BG tend to do a good job or not? do they outsource to "cowboys"?

We paid about £3k for a new combi condenser boiler with BG about 3 years ago, this included moving to a new room (new flue, had to block up old one) couple of new rads, flush out of system, remove old water tanks etc.

Service and workmanship was great but the boiler itself is a nightmare, keeps tripping out our electrics and no-one seems to be able to fix it. I've since read that condenser boilers are notoriously unreliable.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

do you know what model you got dislocated?

it's a right can of worms eh?

It's an 'Ideal' (Ha!) something or other.

can someone please talk to me sorry to butt in

foofmonster · 12/10/2005 15:24

I just asked our estimating dept (heating & plumbing co.) and the answer was "b"""y hell who's doing that!"

Should be about £2k apparently though add a bit more on if you are in London or the SE.

We haven't been to BG for all the subsequent (fruitless) repairs, btw, as they were too expensive, a very obliging and cheap local company keep beating a path to my door to replace various bits and bobs.

well, had a very nice chap around today in my quest to get many, many quotes and he recons we don't need a new one yet and showed me some tricks with how I use the taps to ensure hot water running ok. He was here for about an hour, checking everything out and apart from showing me how to get the best out of the current boiler and taps said all we really need to do is cut the trailing ivy from around the flue. Then off he went having talked me out of spending 3.5K, without charging me a penny.

Am I dreaming? Can this be for real? Am sure I'll wake up any minute now...

When you do want one tho' - you'll phone him....won't you

SoupDragon · 13/10/2005 22:06

Not necessarily dreaming - my dad told me a similar story today oddly enough. Hang onto his number - he's honest and worth keeping!!

katymac · 13/10/2005 22:11

I've been quoted 4.5 for a whole central heating system.....i think I got the better deal

motherpeculiar · 14/10/2005 08:04

Hi - yes I guess I will call him when I need a new one (although I am so naturally paranoid and cynical that I'm thinking there must be something odd about him - like he can't actually fit boilers but knows a lot about taps and leaf trimming, or something )

Soupdragon - meant to email you to say you don't need to do the drive-by for me anymore. The contract is off

We've just had a new top of range condensing boiler with lots of new new pipework and removing the old boiler for under £2000 and we are in most expensive part of SE. BG notoriously expensive and known for pushing dodgy boilers, my Mum fell for it. Good advice re: comparing detailed quotes with proper breakdown of costs. You will save a fortune.
