Mushrooms in the garden

We have loads of these that have sprouted up in the lawn. THey look like ordinary white, closed & open cap mushrooms (depending how big they are!)

How do you know if they're OK to eat? Haven't dared try it (and probably wouldn't ) but they look so fabulous.

soupy I wouldnt touch them just in case they were poisonous or magic ones

teeavee · 08/10/2005 13:42

yes, you do have to be careful - but you could always look them up in a book. In France you can take them to a pharmacy and ask there!

But beware - my dp's grandad was a country GP, and he once went on a visit to a family. When he arrived, the whole family were sitting around the table stone cold dead, having eaten stew with mushrooms in it! even the dog had pegged it!

just thought I'd regale you with that happy tale....

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 13:43

Yeah, I know. I'm not really planning to but they do look fantastic, all fresh and white

white with dark gills is edible. you can leave them on a sheet of newspaper overnight to check that the spores that come out are dark.

if the gills are white or cream coloured, they are poisonous.

Id double check with good photographic illustration, or show them to someone who knows though. Are you new in your house, and would anyone locally know if mushrooms grow in this particular place?

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 13:45

We've been here 4 years and this is the first time mushrooms have sprouted! Some at the other end of the garden are more "exotic" looking and I certainly wouldn't touch them with a bargepole even though I think I've seen them in Tescos before.

what a horrific tale teavee. I believe that someone in my ancestry died from poison fungi as well.
I didnt know that about the pharmacie, thats very interesting.

iota · 08/10/2005 13:45

found loads of these beauties in the woods today - look good enough to eat don't they.

(dh was very impressed that I knew what they were - had to find a pic on the net to prove it though)

Nightynight · 08/10/2005 13:46

shaggy ink caps are edible, Ive eaten them in fact. As are puffballs.

teeavee · 08/10/2005 13:46

yep, I even did it once!

Nightynight · 08/10/2005 13:46

Ive never seen those red ones, always wanted to!

iota · 08/10/2005 13:47

fisrt time i've seen them nightynight - come to Woburn Woods

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 13:48

Maybe I'll make a mushroom risotto for someone I don't like and see if they survive...

teeavee · 08/10/2005 13:48

iota, those are definitely NOT edible!!!

I've had puffball - you slice it and fry it like a steak - and parasol mushrooms too - they're quite common, and v tasty cooked with whole oats (to absorb the juices) garlic and butter - as are the ink-caps

Nightynight · 08/10/2005 13:49

lol theyre well known as poisonous. If I STILL havent seen them by the time my children are grown up and Im all retired, Ill make a special trip to Woburn woods!

iota · 08/10/2005 13:51

teevee - just read your horror story

don't worry, I know fly agaric are poisonous -- I even made ds1's friend drop the stick that he poked one with, so that he didn't inadvertently touch the stick there later

teeavee · 08/10/2005 13:51

my dad collected about 4 carrier bags full of field mushrooms and horse mushrooms last summer - there was a bumper crop in a field near their house

yum!

iota · 08/10/2005 13:54

anyone know which fungi are yellow, with a kind of flat top rather than domed? It's hard to search for a picture without knowing the name

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:01

they might be chanterelle mushrooms? they;re kind of orangey-yellow, trumpet-shaped

iota · 08/10/2005 14:04

vaguely similar teevee, but not trumpet shaped.
BTW also found puffballs and something that loos like frills

anyone fancy a trip to Woburn woods to admire/identify/pick/eat the fungi?

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:05

my dp would be there like ashot! french people love rooting around for weird-looking funghi, then scoffing them!

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 14:11

Picture of my oh-so-dull mushrooms here

iota · 08/10/2005 14:12

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:13

edible! deffo! eat em for tea!or send them to me!

clever you, btw, posting a photo like that

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 14:16

They're past their best now really - they looked even more fabulous a few days ago. There are about 20 large ones and 10 or so smaller versions.
