Mushrooms in the garden

We have loads of these that have sprouted up in the lawn. THey look like ordinary white, closed & open cap mushrooms (depending how big they are!)

How do you know if they're OK to eat? Haven't dared try it (and probably wouldn't ) but they look so fabulous.

They're bog standard "open cap" mushrooms from the supermarket aren't they?

make soup with them

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:19

they've been there for DAYS?! and you haven't eaten them yet?! in my family we would have snaffled them all within minutes - I get really over-excited whenever I see any edible mushrooms I can pick! (sad aren't I)

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 14:19

All out of blue string at the moment I'm afraid

Oh how do you post a photo - I've got a lovely pic of a mushroom that I'd love to share with you. A perfect example of Fly Agaric

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 14:20

teeavee, this is at least the second crop too! I'm too much of a wuss to try them I tend to be very wary when it comes to mushrooms.

Pagan, I stuck mine into member profiles (but the file has to be under 16k I think) or you can post it to somewhere like Photobox and link to it.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 14:22

we have had smaller versions of that growing in our garden since we moved here (about 4 yreas ago too).

I'd never be brave enough to eat mushrooms that didn't come in a box from the supermarket.

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:30

I'm almost in tears thinking of all those good mushrooms going to waste...

Pagan · 08/10/2005 14:31

teeavee · 08/10/2005 14:33

OOOooh, what a beauty! lovely colour - perfect toadstool for little fairies to sit on at the end of the garden

saadia · 08/10/2005 14:55

We have also had mushrooms growing on our lawn - they look really evil to me. My neighbour said not to let dss near them as they may be poisonous, but they have now started to turn black.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2005 16:16

A lovely glossy musroom there, Pagan

Still not brave enough to pick and eat mine!

We had puffballs this year and I finally got round to checking they were ok to eat and then eating them. They were fantastic in a risotto. The one that went off before I ate it is still kicking around the garden - literally - I keep kicking it around hoping the spores will result in more puffballs.
