Just wondering. DS is 4 (5 in Feb) and really into music and also enjoys listening to story CDs. But is he too young? Would he wreck it? Obviously I would only get a cheap £20-30 one. I was thinking about it as an idea for his Christmas or birthday present.

He's been off school this week and DH has rigged my kitchen stereo up in his bedroom. which is really what got me thinking?

So what do you think?

6 months

We were having problems calming her to sleep, so decided to try a lullaby tape. Since then she has had various story cds etc. She's now 2 1/2, cd player is fine, and she can turn it on herself in the morning to listen to stories.

ScummyMummy · 07/10/2005 17:27

I think an argos type cheapy one is just fine for that age group, Bozza. My sons have had one in their room for a good couple of years and it's pretty much unwrecked still.

HRHQoQ · 07/10/2005 17:27

Does he still try and wreck the one you have downstairs?

If yes - then don't buy one yet

If he doesn't mess with it (try and shove CD's where they shouldn't go and toast inside it etc etc) then buy one.

flamebat · 07/10/2005 17:31

Oh yeah, was £20 from Asda.

Bozza · 07/10/2005 18:27

He's fine with the downstairs one. Will just have to watch his 16 month old sister I suppose. But thats the same with toys we've bought him of that price as well.

Birth! White noise was fab, he found it so calming

hunkerpumpkin · 07/10/2005 18:31

DS has one now, a CD player. Has had one since last Christmas - he was 9 months old then

Mind you, he can have a TV when he's earnt the money to buy it

RTKMonherBroomstick · 07/10/2005 18:46

DS had a little tikes cassette player from being a toddler

He got a sony stereo system for his 9th birthday

ScarySkribble · 07/10/2005 20:47

Mine had music in room from very young. You can get ones from about 14.99 up. When they were small they were one high shelves for adult control only.

KBear · 07/10/2005 20:50

ELC do a CD player - possibly more child-proof than others. DD and DS have tape players in their rooms and listens to story tapes all the time. Check out the library for these as they soon get bored with the same stories.

magnolia1 · 07/10/2005 20:52

The twins were 3 when they had one in their room. They are 6 now and on the 3rd one Admittedly only really cheap ones so maybe it's that rather than the way they treat them.

They have a pink one now and hopefully it will last longer.

MrsSpoon · 07/10/2005 20:55

DS1 has had one since he was 5 ish, prior to that he had an ELC tape player but that has been demolished now.

jambuttie · 07/10/2005 21:00

ds1 was 2.5 and thinking of giving the twins ( 21 months) one from santa this year

northstar · 07/10/2005 21:01

Same as colditz, ds had one since birth, I used to play my mums yoga music to send him to sleep. He's 3.5 now and I swear if i put that cd on now it would still send him off. He has loads of tapes that he has played himself for about a year.

Hulababy · 07/10/2005 21:29

DD is 3y 6m ad has a CD player in her bedroom. It was actually bought for her 1st birthday, and hasbeen in her room ever since. Before then she was in our room anyway, so we used on old one of ours. When little she had quiet lullaby type music played on it at night time when going to sleep. Now she listens to audio books sometimes, and she will often put CDs on during the day to have a dnace and sing to.

misdee · 07/10/2005 21:32

i am actually thinking of getting my dd1 an MP3 player for xmas. am i mad?

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 07/10/2005 21:40

god yes we've always had one in her room.
radio 3 at night
McFly in the mornings
radio 4 for me when I was bored...
no, I don;t think you can ever be too young to listen to music in your room

jambuttie · 08/10/2005 07:33

Misdee my friend has bought ds1 an mp3 player for xmas alsthough he does want an ipod

he can wait a bit longer for an ipod though

ThomBat · 08/10/2005 08:28

Lottie had a CD player in place before she was born, not sure what make, cost about 60quid. We played classical, chill out, jazz, etc etc, bit of Bob Marley, bit of the Beatles and so on. Now Daddy just plays funky house soul, etc on the decks in the studio instead and she loves it. The CD gets used for the odd nursery rhyme or audio book. It'll go into the new nursery when new baby arrives.

melissasmummy · 08/10/2005 15:58

Approx 6 months.

Just a cheep basic one from Woolies £19.99. CD, Cassette Radio thing.

DD has always loved music & it as a big help getting her to settle at night.

EvesMama · 08/10/2005 20:45

dd got a cd player in her room at 2years ish and a t.v and video 2 years 3 months, but as the t.v was dp's and about 15 years old, it 'popped' last week, so we've just been out today to buy her a new 21" t.v and dvd player combined..didnt realise until we got home it takes up half her room, so this afty, we went back out for paint and brushes to do up big back bedroom for her!...most expensive t.v combi EVER!!!

Lara2 · 08/10/2005 21:40

Sorry, but WHY would a child that young want or even need a tv/video/dvd in her room???
Words utterly fail me!!

misdee · 08/10/2005 21:42

because my childrens room is their haven.

and its just across the hal lfrom the living room.

Bozza · 08/10/2005 21:48

Lara I assume that was addressed at Evesmama because I have no intention of getting DS a TV in his bedroom. Just seeing what people thought about stereos and the consensus seems to be to go for it.

Lara2 · 08/10/2005 21:52

Sorry Bozza, should have made that clear - yes it was directed at EvesMama. I'm not getting embroiled in an argument because as Bozza said, we've done the TV discussion. I was just so shocked that a 2 year old would need their own TV!!
