if so how much?

nutcackle · 05/10/2005 12:18

Yes i would, erm not sure about prices but perhaps £10 for a black bag, £8 a basket.

auntymandy · 05/10/2005 12:19

thats what I thought. £10 a bin bag rater than so much an hour or per item!

an hourly rate is much more appropriate IMO. When you say a bin bag do you mean a big black bag stuffed full of clothes ? cos that would take a long time to iron! my cleaner does ironing as well and she charges £7 per hour - I feel I should pay her more though!

Scatterbrain · 05/10/2005 12:21

I do !! She collects from me and delivers it back the next day - charges by the hour (£8.50) and does all my weekly ironing for usually about £18. She is incredibly fast !

I tried another service that charged by the kilo and that worked out a lot more expensive. I definitely prefer the hourly rate. A friend pays per item - ie a shirt is 50p - she is very happy with that as she knows what she'll be paying - the weight thing is really guesswork and I had a few shocks that way !!

flamebat · 05/10/2005 12:23

Hour sounds much better plan... if you've got a bag full of silk shirts that have been a scrumpled heap for weeks, its gonna take ages to do

auntymandy · 05/10/2005 12:26

That true, so about £7 an hour? that sounds alot to me!

Fangache · 05/10/2005 12:27

Oh yes! She starts on Thursday! She will clean the house from top to bottom and iron anything I leave out for her! For £9.50 per hour.

Stilltrue · 05/10/2005 12:28

I do ! My cleaner comes 2xweekly; one of those days is mainly ironing. I pay £8per hour. Once my washing machine broke and took a week or so to repair. there are 6 of us so I didn't want the washing/ironing to pile up so I used a local laundry service. They charged by the bag. Ok as a one off but could quickly become v. expensive. I think an hourly rate is appropriate for someone coming to your home, but "by the bag" is more the norm for external ironing services.

Fangache · 05/10/2005 12:28

Oh thats through an Agency.... so I imagine the Cleaner get around £6.50 of that.

auntymandy · 05/10/2005 12:28

bloody hell!
Do cleaners get paid that much?!
Ooops sorry!
So a child care worker gets about a fiver and a cleaner almost double!

expatinscotland · 05/10/2005 12:30

No. B/c I don't buy or own any clothes that need ironed.

auntymandy · 05/10/2005 12:31

So if you took it to someone and then picked it up, how much do you think is fair?

OP posts:
Fangache · 05/10/2005 12:32

Expat - Me neither!! its only the kids clothes I'm having ironed (jeans and stuff).

AuntMandy - Those rates are generally through an Agency though.

Kidstrack2 · 05/10/2005 12:34

I would love to pay someone to do my ironing, just a bit expensive for me.

Lonelywitch · 05/10/2005 12:34

Anyone in the bristol area want to pay me to do it? I would charge £7 an hour. I have just received an estimate for some building works and there is no way we are going to afford it on dh's salary alone! I have even rung up the council to enquire about...shock! horror! .... returning to teaching after nearly 10 years out. I would far rather iron though...
