Do you have a cleaner?

I'm thinking of getting one (shhh, don't tell Jools!! )

Already have a gardener as that is something I just could not keep tidy, but have always wanted to do my own cleaning - I quite like it and I'm not sure about someone else in the house (hunky, tanned young maaaayan in the garden is fine though ). HOwever, something has to give as I've got the kids all day and my freelance work in the evenings/weekends and this house is just unmanageable - it's things like the toilets and the wooden floors - I'm afraid to say they get to quite a state before I get round to it

So I guess what I want to know is...

  • how much do you pay (if you don't mind telling)?
  • how often do they come?
  • does the place not get a tip again 5 mins after they've gone?

TIA

No. Would love one, but my house is too filthy - would be embarrassed

Gobbledigook · 26/09/2005 19:15

Yes there is that - what if I end up cleaning and tidying before they came

Have done and will do again when I have sorted my house out once and for all. I used to have to hide stuff away so that the cleaner could see what she was meant to be cleaning!

I pay £7 an hour, she comes for 2 hours on a Thursday and hoovers throughout, washes the kitchen and bathroom floors and does the bathroom/ toilet.
I wish I could afford her for longer so she could do more (windows etc.)
I think the house is actually cleaner for longer as we feel more motivated when we start with a clean sheet once a week to keep the house clean. I run the hoover round during the weekend and give the toilets a wipe, but that's about it. Plus I feel if it gets too bad my cleaner would not be able to do everything in her 2 hours.

Mine does 4 hours a week and I pay her 5.50. I go though an agency so I pay them too, but I can't remember how much. A couple of pounds an hour too I think. I do clean before she comes (a little bit), but the house does look clean after she has been for at least......1 day. I think it's worth it. Could not live without her now. Oh and IME if you pay them for 4 hours, they do 3 (unless you are in the house of course!)

hoxtonchick · 26/09/2005 19:19

we have a cleaner for 4 hours a week & pay her £30. this is in london. we pay her for 4 weeks holiday a year too. she's great, & it did wonders for mine & dp's relationship when we employed her!

sis · 26/09/2005 19:34

dh and I are very lazy so having a cleaner once a week is great cos we have to discipline ourselves to tidy away stuff like post otherwise she will 'tidy' it away somewhere and it will take us hours to find it again! We pay £6 and hour in London for 3-4 hours a week.

Caligula · 26/09/2005 19:36

You only want to get one so you can join Toothache's cleaner clique.

katierocket · 26/09/2005 19:37

Yes, once a fortnight. It's so worth it.
We pay her £30 every time she comes (usually gets in done in 3 to 4 hours).

happymerryberries · 26/09/2005 19:38

Yes, and I pay £7 pounds an hour and I am happy to do it! She gives herself a raise each year and I am greatful!

She comes twoce a week and is a total life saver for us

weesaidie · 26/09/2005 19:47

BlondeinLondon · 26/09/2005 20:10

Passionflower · 26/09/2005 21:20

Gosh I sooo wish. Can't really justify it unless I do some paid employment though.

katymac · 26/09/2005 21:47

I want one ...... to do my spring cleaning

I just can't manage it

DH does loads - but we just don't have time

Gomez · 26/09/2005 21:50

Yes - in fact I have three . Family business - 2 clean and the third irons - costs me £40 per week They are very good and tidy as well as clean and change the beds. Bargain! They come mid-week and have the place gleaming.

MarsLady · 26/09/2005 21:54

even if it does become a junk heap seconds after she's left... at least it's a clean junk heap.

I love my cleaner. She organises me and I couldn't do without her! Especially as she now come twice a week and irons as well. I love her!

MarsLady · 26/09/2005 21:55

oh yeah, £7.50 p/hr and she does a lot more than I can do in 2 hours

katymac · 26/09/2005 22:11

Apologies for the Hijack

Hi Marslady a parcel is on it's way to you.......

Gobbledigook · 26/09/2005 22:12

Thanks all! Hmmm, will ponder this one! When I've not got work on I can manage fine - it's when I'm busy...I've been permanently busy now since the start of June! Not had a break yet so all evenings and weekends taken up with work and the house is a pit!

Xena · 26/09/2005 22:15

7.50ph twice a week for 2 hours and she is fab, and ditto mars a tip again 10mins after shes left but at least its clean.

Gobbledigook · 26/09/2005 22:16

I could cope with untidiness because I can keep on top of that fairly well - it's just the floors and bathrooms really. Could I have someone in just to do those bits?

MarsLady · 26/09/2005 22:19

Rhubarb · 26/09/2005 22:20

Don't get me started on cleaners!
