Ebay: need to end an auction early, but ebay won't let me, what now?

Do I just wait until the auction is over with and tell the winning bidder that I can't sell the item? There's less than 12 hours to go and bids on the item, so Ebay won't let me end the auction.

The person who gave it me a year ago wants it back, she never said she'd want it back. But I didn't ask her if she'd mind me auctioning it either, so don't want to tell her that I was going to auction it (I was going to make a massive £1.50 profit, and all that).

What can I do on Ebay?

do you know someone who can put a completely ridiculous bid on for oyu so that when it ends they are guaranteed to win?

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 14:32

email the bidders now and tell them the item has been broken/ruined?

Nemo1977 · 26/09/2005 14:32

what is the item no and will do it for you if oyu like?

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 14:33

I'll bid on it for you if you promise not to hold me to it

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 14:33

ooooh, a bidding war!

Nemo1977 · 26/09/2005 14:33

dont know why u cant withdraw it as lost or broken?

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 14:35

It's because there are less than 12 hours left and the item has bids on it. I think they are standard Ebay rules.

Nemo1977 · 26/09/2005 14:35

lol sd

marthamoo · 26/09/2005 14:36

Bid a million pounds, soupy!

fqueenzebra · 26/09/2005 14:40

Yeah but I have to pay a percentage of your ridiculous bid to Ebay, so don't think that gets me off the hook!

Can you add anything to your add/text, somtimes people add to the item, please do not bid on this item.
Has anybody bid on it?

laughinglil · 26/09/2005 14:44

whats the item number? what is it? sorry being nosey hehe!

SleepySuzy · 26/09/2005 14:45

Why won't Ebay let you end it early? I have never heard of this happening. What exactly happened, when you tried?

marthamoo · 26/09/2005 14:45

Oh don't give the item number - someone could report you for "shilling" (just read about it on the other ebay thread )

marthamoo · 26/09/2005 14:46

Sorry...shillbidding, apparently.

MrsS · 26/09/2005 14:50

I would email the highest bidder and explain the issue and keep doing that with new bidders until the auction ends. I would not get others to beat the bid as you may get reported and suspended for false bidding. Good Luck

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 17:55

SleepySuzy, you can't end an auction early with less than 12 hours left to run.

Definitely just email the bidders and tell them the item has been broken.

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 17:55

You can then mutually void the transaction with the winning bidder and avoid the final value fee (but not the listing fee I think)

Kelly1978 · 26/09/2005 18:04

it wont let u end it if there are bids on it and it is less than 12 hours. So what you have to do is cancel the bids first and then end the auction. It doesn work - I've had to do it.

Kelly1978 · 26/09/2005 18:04

sorry for typo - it does work.

fqueenzebra · 26/09/2005 18:10

thanks for you help ladies -- dh thinks I should just tell the person who gave me the item that I already flogged it and then offer to give her the money (and I would give her the real amount, minus ebay fees).

Bad idea or good? I don't know what to do, now!

OP posts:
throckenholt · 26/09/2005 19:00

how often do you see her ?

I think I agree with DH - tell her they were sold on ebay for a very small profit (which effectively they are if you can't cancel the auction). Offer her the profit, and say you didn't realise she would ever want them back, that you didn't actually use them, couldn't thikn who else to give them to, so put them on ebay so someone could make use of them.

Pretty unfortunate timing though .

fqueenzebra · 26/09/2005 19:10

I see her almost daily, she's probably the school-gate mum I like the most, actually, I really wouldn't want to upset her. I don't mind giving her the money at all. I even offered a while back to help her auction stuff off on ebay (her parents buy her children lots of very expensive designer clothes).

The auction is up to £3.19.... 2 hours to go on it, I could see the selling price hitting a fiver, and I think she'd like the fiver more than the shoes, really (I know her kids have no use for them... although she was looking supsicious pregnant today, I hope not for her sake; she already had 4 under 4.).

SoupDragon · 26/09/2005 19:13

OK - let the auction end, before contacting the winning bidder tell your friend that you've just auctioned them for £x and that she can either have the money or you can contact the winning bidder and say the item has been damaged by a small child with a black marker pen and give her the item back.
