Ebay: need to end an auction early, but ebay won't let me, what now?

Do I just wait until the auction is over with and tell the winning bidder that I can't sell the item? There's less than 12 hours to go and bids on the item, so Ebay won't let me end the auction.

The person who gave it me a year ago wants it back, she never said she'd want it back. But I didn't ask her if she'd mind me auctioning it either, so don't want to tell her that I was going to auction it (I was going to make a massive £1.50 profit, and all that).

What can I do on Ebay?

do you think she saw them on ebay and that is why she asked for them back ?

Whatever - I would be honest - say you really had no idea she wanted them back and were trying to clear some things out, and thought they would be of use to someone else. And offer her the money.

4 under $ - eek !

update for the nosy....
She was embarrassed, really. It seems the shoes were bought for her son by a friend who is now a single parent & has had a little boy. The original buyer asked for the shoes back for her baby boy, knowing that they were hardly worn, so then my friend asked me...

Anyway, I gave her the £4.10 & said that her friend should put the money towards buying a pair that would def. fit her baby son properly. At least the mom who gave me the shoes doesn't seem put out about it all.
