bah! i am sick of these threads about people moaning about whydo the rich moan about money problems. eventually everyone decides its all about choices. blah blah blah.

well, i have made a choice, i choose to live in a place with running water. and brick walls, and central heatng.
a tent made from old blankets would work as well. more old blankets for sleeping bags.
food, well breastfeeding at first coz its free, thereafter soup from a soup kitchen, free school meals. apples nicked off peoples trees, and just generally gathering. nettle leaves are very nutritious.
nappies, bah, kids dont need them. a few old towels are enough. clothes. well, charity shops, or if you want to be even cheaper, how about old curtain material from the charity shop roughly cut and stictched together.

school, well, if they must, and at least it provides a free meal.

so, what have i missed out,. food, shelter. clothing. thats it isnt it . everything else is just a luxury.

Say 'Moredun, Hyvots, Hailesland'. That should do the trick.

skinnycow · 25/09/2005 22:43

we are neither - we are comfortable with what we have but like so many others, we want more. Well to be specific, I want more. I want to live about 2 miles away in a nice village and would love a new car and a clothing allowance - none of which looks likely for hte foreseeable future.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:43

my brother lives in the Flats in Moredun.....he's currently waiting for a new kitchen from the council - as the unit in his are rotting (he's only been waiting 6yrs....)

hunkermunker · 25/09/2005 22:46

Isn't it a good thing to always be striving for more? Ambition, etc?

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:49

We lived in Muirhouse, QofQ and were long gone before they ever got round to those new kitchens and bathrooms. Of course, the ASBO neighbour downstairs had a lot to do w/that.

soapbox · 25/09/2005 22:49

Well none of these flats are going to get any better without more taxpayers money which means more people earning £100k plus to pay them!

Assuming that TB is not about to leave Iraq anytime soon!!!!

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:50

his flat has one plus point though.....he's on the 12th (or is it 15th - I can never remember) floor - facing towards the castle - and gets the most fantastic views

Oh and the rooms are MASSIVE!

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:52

I knew someone who lived in WEster Hailes (she moved back to the States, though) who had a view like that, QoQ! OMG, she could look right on the Castle as she washed dishes!

In our old 'hood, some of the tower flats overlook the Firth of Forth and have these absolutely STUNNING view.

hunkermunker · 25/09/2005 22:54

Well then. They can always buy bottled water - and sell picture postcards of their view

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:56

Yeah, fabulous views, he's on Moredunvale Bank, "lovely place" . He's resigned himself to the fact that he's going to be there for the foreseeable future and is about to start decorating the place (and hoping they get him a new kitchen soon LOL).

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:58

We had a crap view. We weren't in a tower, though. The one bedroom we had was pretty big, but it had a funny layout. On the whole, the place wasn't designed for modern appliances like a washing machine, so nothing fit well.

Exactly, HM !

hunkermunker · 25/09/2005 22:58

FGS, some people just have no vision, right EPIS?

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 23:01

He's got a 2 (double) bedroom flat - and he's on his own. Came about as he shot to near the top of the list due to being on the verge of being homeless, kicked out of his (privately rented) flat by a b*stard landlord. This was the first place that came up (we're talking 7yrs ago, so the lists were shorter, and the chances of getting a place as a single male were much higher) and he took it.

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 23:05

The list is hopeless. And the entire stock is going to be transferred to a housing association in 2006 so the Executive will write off the Council's £300m+ of debt - some of which is still being paid on homes that are no longer extant. So your brother's new landlord will be a housing association. Some tenants in Moredun and Hyvots have already voted to have their homese turned over to an association already, in hopes of getting some much needed repairs done more quickly than the 6 years the Council has been promising to sort them out.

HM, I don't know what those people are moaning about?! . What's a contaminated water supply, chipped lead paint, damp so bad if gives your children respiratory problems, and dangerous electrics? They're not really poor [rolls eyes emoticon].

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 23:08

just seen this - but it doesn't seem to include DB's road.....how cr*p is that!

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 23:10

Yep, QofQ! That's some of the places I mentioned earlier in the thread - that have to use bottled water and have pigeon feathers coming out of their taps.

3 towers in Oxgangs were condemned. I think two of them have come down so far.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 23:11

The roads either side of DB seem to be mentioned but his sh*tty flats aren't.....why don't they just bulldoze the whole lot???

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 23:14

Most likely b/c there's no place to put the tenants in the interim. Also, the new contracts do not allow the tenants the right to buy, and there's a fight on over the existing tenants becoming new tenants of the housing association and needing new contracts.

It's had to be abolished b/c the right to buy caused a seriously sharp increase in homelessness and lack of affordable housing to rent.

There's also an argument about Right to Return. It isn't guaranteed when the old homes comes down, so a tenant who is forced to relocate may not be able to return once new housing is complete.

It's a nightmare!

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 23:17

why would anyone want to return there anyhow LOL - I know my DB would be out of there like a shot given even the slightest opportunity!

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 23:18

I hear ya there! We went out like bullets. I still can't drive by there. I literally can't. I get a panic attack if I go too near there and it still gives me nightmares.

But I guess some people like it.

handlemecarefully · 25/09/2005 23:19

Has a particular thread provoked this thread? (insatiable curiousity of a part time mumsnetter)...

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 23:22

this one.

handlemecarefully · 25/09/2005 23:23

Thanks QoQ - you're a diamond.
