bah! i am sick of these threads about people moaning about whydo the rich moan about money problems. eventually everyone decides its all about choices. blah blah blah.

well, i have made a choice, i choose to live in a place with running water. and brick walls, and central heatng.
a tent made from old blankets would work as well. more old blankets for sleeping bags.
food, well breastfeeding at first coz its free, thereafter soup from a soup kitchen, free school meals. apples nicked off peoples trees, and just generally gathering. nettle leaves are very nutritious.
nappies, bah, kids dont need them. a few old towels are enough. clothes. well, charity shops, or if you want to be even cheaper, how about old curtain material from the charity shop roughly cut and stictched together.

school, well, if they must, and at least it provides a free meal.

so, what have i missed out,. food, shelter. clothing. thats it isnt it . everything else is just a luxury.

Agree, Caligula.

We live in west London (not the West End though!), and we choose to stay here because we have family close by and a network of friends. Plus we know the area, we know where the good schools are, where the dodgier areas are, etc.

We could have a better standard of living (ie more money in the pot at the end of the month, bigger house, probably two cars) if we moved out of town. But then we'd have long commutes to work and less quality of life because we wouldn't be near family.

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:22

thank you caligula for saying it ever so much more eloquoently than i ever could!

emkana, feel free to start whatever threads you like. if i dont like the thread, then i shouldnt read it. but unfortunately i did. and it got me a bit riled up. not the topic itslef. but the pointlessness of the discussion.
froggy, are you typing one handed?

And for the record - I'm not having a go because I'm poor - I'm nothing of the sort. For all you know, I'm on £100K too but I ain't whining about it.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:22

in the time it's taken me to read this thread, 10-15 children will have died just because they don't have access to clean water or sanitation.

hunkermunker · 25/09/2005 22:23

And we're not on £100k a year either - not close to half that!

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:23

hoot hoot hoot hoot hoot hoot hoot (to myself to shut up before I go off on a tangent)

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:24

Ta, QoQ. I parped, but your hoot is much louder .

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:25

everyone is defending themselves now. saying, 'im not the poor little rich girl!!!' its not me its not me.
qoq, what took you so long to get here? my point exactly. clean water should be the benchmark. and by that we are all of us millionaires.

OP posts:
stitch · 25/09/2005 22:26

well, most ofus. i better not make assumptions about everyone having clean drinking water on mn

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 25/09/2005 22:27

I didn't post on the other thread at all - couldn't be arsed to read it all!

emkana · 25/09/2005 22:27

The thing is this: Sometimes I read something/think of something/experience something and it grabs my attention/annoys me/interests me/makes me laugh -

and then I start a thread about it, not because I necessarily expect a discussion that will "solve a problem" or "have the answers" but just because I want to talk about it! And obviously in this case lots of others felt the same way, otherwise they wouldn't have posted! That's what MN is blooming well for -
are you telling me that all your discussions/conversations in RL are meaningful and never pointless? And on MN you can even sometimes say things you'd never normally say in RL.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:28

oh and lets not forget that 300 million children tonight went/will go to bed hungry.

skinnycow · 25/09/2005 22:28

dont you all find that money just "goes" on stuff? Some years ago when dd was off work for 13 weeks we survived on his £240pw sick pay and in fact we were far better off than we usually were. Admittedly I also did some work but it was sporadic and not guaranteed.

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:30

emkana, exactly how i feel.
as i said , i shouldnt have read it, but i did, and now i am having a moan about it. coz this is mumsnet!

in rl i never get to discuss such interesting stuff. just a glorified chauffer/cook/cleaner there.

Believe it or not, there are people here in Edinburgh who were told by their landlord, the City and Council of Edinburgh, not to drink the water out of their taps - their housing is in such poor condition the water is contaminated and not fit for drinking.

emkana · 25/09/2005 22:32

stitch, moan to your heart's content -

just don't say anything about what threads we should/shouldn't have.

I think I'll just go and start a thread about extended breastfeeding...

Hulababy · 25/09/2005 22:32

But GDG - is it likely that it was just reported that way and not quite what they actually said. Seems more likely to be that to be honest. I can't imagine anyone on a high income saying they can't afford a 3rd child but really want one - more likely that they choose not to have a 3rd child because they'd have to make financial changes. Does that make sense?

Still think it is all about choices and priorities. Everyiones are different.

To me I can't really see that this is any different than a well-off person saying they "can't afford to have more children" than a less-well-off person with >2 (or even 1 child maybe) children saying they are poor. Two sets of choices and priorities - both chosen. Therefore no cause for complaints really, surely?

Still reckon it was more likely poor reporting than a direct quote though.

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:33

yes i can beleive it.
edinburgh is one of the oldest cities. the royal mile end of it is also the place where the worlds first skyscrapers were built. something liek a million people living in a square mile. its a bit like the city of ankmorpork where the city is built on itself. 9terry pratchet)

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:33

I can believe that expat...but at least they've got taps

emkana · 25/09/2005 22:34

Wouldn't be surprised if that couple were a complete figment of the journo's imagination to illustrate a point.

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:34

These 'homes' are in an area known as Moredun and Hyvots.

They number in the thousands.

So I don't think it's fair to say that no one in the UK is truly poor.

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:35

True, QofQ, taps that get clogged up w/the feathers from dead birds.

But what have they got to moan about? They should be bloody grateful, ken?

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:36

what part of edinburgh is that? i obviously dont know the city as well as i thought i did.
this poplulation concentration that i mentioned was a couple of centuries ago! but obvioulsy the infrastructure from then probly still exists, polluting the water.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:37

It's not a part many people on £100k/pa see , except if they're driving a car that says 'Doctor' on it.

stitch · 25/09/2005 22:41

i refuse to join the defensive brigade. rich poor whatever. i am what i am.
i havent lived in edinburgh since i was 11. just been there to visit lots. and then spent most o f time shopping etc. touristy bits. sis went to uni there for four years. ill ask her about it.
