Did you know it's Christmas?

My local Cash and Carry was putting up a very nice outside display today so it must be Christmas! So I hope you don't mind me mentioning pressies as Christmas can never come too early for me.

Could we please have ideas for different pressies not socks or slippers or anything from M & S.

I'd like to kick off with the website fletcher-woodcraft.freeserve.co.uk. They make wooden handcrafted items (click on GAMES). They make lovely walnut Solitaire sets with marbles for £29.00 and I think they're wonderful and a bit different.

Also how much do people spend on their SIL's and BIL's and neices etc?

In the past we have put puzzle pieces in, which the children can put together over a number of days (eg puzzles of photos that we have taken, with people they might recognise)thus adding to the suspense!

Marina · 11/09/2001 10:46

Sid, you are a genius. What a lovely idea. I was not looking forward to 24 x sweeties or marbles, and the pockets on ours are too small for some of the other suggestions.

Inky · 11/09/2001 15:12

someone help me out please - two things (linked)
I love a long way from my family, and it's my mum's birthday (as well as christmas) coming up. I'd like to get her birthday present (and as many Christmas pressies as possible) via the internet.

For her birthday I was wondering about booze deliveries - a selection pack of interesting beers perhaps. Anyone know any good web sites for this or any other adult ( as in grown up - not naughty!) presents - UK only please!

Btw, re birthday, my days are numbered. Thanks for your help!

Ems · 11/09/2001 18:02

Inky, I looked at Waitrose web site yesterday and they do some lovely boozy presents, pink champagne and yummmy hampers and things.

The White Company do lovely smellies and smelly candles.

If I think of anything else after boys have gone to bed, I will come back to you!

Hmonty · 12/09/2001 08:52

Inky,
I recently bought my Mum a back massage voucher at a local beauty salon. She loved it! I found them by looking on www.yell.co.uk under beauty salons and just phoning one near to her home. Paid by credi over the phone and they posted the vocuher to me...Worked a treat. Did the same for my mother-in-law with a manicure but I haven't had a report back yet so I don't think she's had it done. Oooo back massage. There's a nice thought....

Twink · 12/09/2001 13:51

Inky, I'm another satisfied Waitrose.com customer, have used them for flowers, fruit and wine. For beer a good place to start is the Black Sheep brewery (blacksheep.co.uk) or Cropton brewery (croptonbrewery.co.uk). I've been the lucky recepient of a presentation pack from the latter and given the overall professionalism (?) of the Black Sheep brewery, I'm sure the mail order side will be good too.
Also, as I mentioned on another thread, ChocExpress are excellent (if I carry on like this I think I qualify for a marketing post with them..) Loads of different chocolate orientated stuff.

Meeeerrrrry Christmas to one and all. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy (and ignore the MIL).

Rhiannon · 20/12/2001 19:07

Joe1, that reminds me of the old Russ Abbott song

"Oh, oh, oh my mother in law, so open and tender just like a coldsore"!!!!! Still makes me laugh now.

Merry Christmas all, byee Bugsy for now. R.

SueDonim · 21/12/2001 12:33

Merry Christmas, Bugsy, and everyone else! I hope Santa brings you all you wish for.

TigerMoth1 · 21/12/2001 15:14

Merry Christmas everyone - hope the morning starts late, the meal is perfect and the arguments are non-existant.

I won't say goodbye, because I'm not going quite yet - and I may get internet access over the hols if I can get my new modem up and running!

AnnieMo · 24/12/2001 21:20

I am now sitting at the computer with a large gin and tonic. The presents are wrapped, the food bought and the baby in bed with his stocking hanging on the door. My older son is still whizzing around the house in a state of hyper excitement. I am still recovering from our Church Christmas Service when our youngest was baby Jesus. He played to the gallery perfectly but when the wise men arrived he took fancy to one of the gifts. It was all Mary could do to hold him as he wriggled and squirmed as he tried to grab the shiny blue present. Needless to say I howled as I hid behind my hands. A Happy and Peaceful Christmas to you all and your families. I am off now to spend some 'quality time!'

So how did it go everyone?

My christmas was fab and peaceful - utterly amazing! Only glitch is that I can't get my modem and internet access kit to work - am using a friend's computer to write this - will be onto Dixons and the kit's computer help lines about this shortly.

KMG · 27/12/2001 18:34

We had a fantastic time - just the four of us, no relatives, no motorway driving, no hassle, no stress, nobody else's agenda, no-one else's house to fit in with - it was lovely! Very relaxing, and enjoyable. We went to the zoo on Wednesday - very cold, but definitely my best boxing day ever. (In my defence I did invite the inlaws to come and stay with us, but they declined! RESULT!)

Rhiannon · 27/12/2001 22:53

Lovely thankyou, DH excelled himself on the present front with diamonds! Whoopeeee!

There seems to be a lot of cheese and biscuits left, oh well. Just finished watching yesterday's Jonathan Creek, not bad, the bit with the drawbridge was well thought up, we were thinking that the floor would turn over!

Hit the Next sale today, not bad, think I was a bit late for the towels and duvet sets but DD got a bag full. R.

Had a great time with all the family minus brother who's deflected to his girlfriend's family camp - my little, baby brother, no! (Well he's 22 now but still...!) DD had her 2nd birthday on the 23rd which went fine but she didn't know what had hit her by the end of boxing day (cue almighty tantrum from hell). I am going out on the town for the first time this festive period tonight and I can't wait to get a bit of me time (and a bit of vodka!)

Robinw WHY did you have to mention diets? (it is soooo true though - gah!!!)

Rhiannon - I thought the Jonathan Creek was awful this yr (usual love it). It had a lot of inconsistencies (like the telephone call to JC that in one scene the girl knew what had been said in it, then later she didn't) and the plot was so winding that by the end I'd forgotten the relevance of the guy who did it! Julia Sawalha was excellent as Caroline Quentin's replacement, but Alan Davies seemed to be playing a very hackneyed JC, maybe its time for the BBC to bin it now...?
Sorry for my complete review, had to mention it though because it was the one program that I was really looking forward to watching, and I'm annoyed that it wasn't up to scratch!
