Doing a Good Turn REALLY does pay

A funny thing happened to me in Marks and Spencer's food hall on Wednesday.

In the checkout queue I had my usual large amount of food and a smart young man in a suit came and stood behind me with one sandwich (it was lunchtime).

I asked him if he'd like to go in front of me which he did.

When it was my turn the checkout assistant told me that the young man had paid for his sandwich (costing £2) with a £10 note and had only taken £3 change, saying to her "Please give the lady behind me £5 off her bill"

She couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it, but I took the £5

I told some m/netters this story yesterday at a lunch meeting and they'd never heard of such a thing either?

And I found £1 in the gym car park on Tuesday so at this rate I'll soon be a millionaire

He'd probably stolen the £10 from a little old lady outside

anorak · 16/09/2005 15:59

I wonder if it was one of those 'random acts of kindness' that some people are committed to?

sassy · 16/09/2005 16:00

Lovely chap!

(Would have to be M&S, wouldn't have happened in Lidl!)

QueenOfQuotes · 16/09/2005 16:00

maybe he thought you looked like you needed the monetary help

FrumpyGrumpy · 16/09/2005 16:02

I think that is just fantastic. As long as there are people who do stuff like that the world will remain a beautiful place. Remember the film Pay it Forward? Definitely a pay it forward moment.

Cam · 16/09/2005 16:03

One of the m/netters on Thursday came up with that one too QoQ

FrumpyGrumpy, my feelings exactly

Cam - Last Christmas I noticed someone had left a shopping bag on a trolley in Tesco carpark. I had a look inside to see if I there was a wallet with a contact number in it and the whole bag was full of money! £3800 in 20s to be exact!

It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tempting, but I didn't keep it. I took it home and phoned the "home" number stored in the mobile I found inside.
The woman gave me £100. I was a bit miffed.... the least she could've given me was 10%!

Turns out she owns a big hotel in the area and that was the takings from a wedding the night before. She deserved to lose it for being so bloody careless!

QueenOfQuotes · 16/09/2005 16:05

oh and on a more serious note - I agree with frumpy - one of those lovely gestures which make you remember that the world isn't all bad

FrumpyGrumpy · 16/09/2005 16:05

I'm a dreamer but you never know what's been going on in his life. Maybe he needed that kindness, that contact, that smile. It must have really meant something to him.

Cam · 16/09/2005 16:06

And there was me thinking "I've still got it"

FrumpyGrumpy · 16/09/2005 16:08

Did you check the fiver for his phone number!!!?

FrumpyGrumpy · 16/09/2005 16:10

Gotta run but its given me a lovely warm feeling that normally only gin does for me!

mumtochloe · 16/09/2005 17:35

That is fantastic - what a gent!

Toothache has got me thinking though - how tempted would you lot be. Would any of you have kept the money?

Shoot me down but I would have seriously seriously considered keeping it. That could pay my debts off, give us a fantastic holiday (not had one in 9 years!) or even get me some boobs!!

Ok -Shoot me now (remember I didn't say I would definitely keep it!!)

Hattie05 · 16/09/2005 17:40

mumtochloe, i might be tempted to not notice the mobile phone in the bag and any other method of contacting the owner, then grab the money and run

mumtochloe · 16/09/2005 18:10

Thanks for your honesty Hattie. They can shoot both of us now!

Cam · 17/09/2005 15:21

mumtochloe, that's what my dh said, "he was a real gentleman"

Well he said that after he'd asked me if the man was goodlooking lol

Keep the money in Toothache's case? Not as the owner was contactable, but if there had been no form of ID with it, I probably would because it would be impossible for the police to reunite it with its rightful owner.

OP posts:
Toothache · 18/09/2005 20:29

Mumtochloe - Had I known who it had belonged to before I wouldn't have hesitated to keep it! As it was takings from a well known hotel it was probably covered by their insurance! And apart from that the owner is a former Celtic player who bought it almost outright!!!

But.... my conscience kept niggling away at me that it could've been some old dears life savings. And she was giving it away to her family for her last Christmas (or something equally heartwrenching!). I knew it was somebody more mature as there was also dentures and reading glasses in the bottom of the bag!

ho hum. Still waiting for my good luck in return.

Tanzie · 18/09/2005 20:35

I once found 250 quid sticking out of a cashpoint. I took it back to the bank the next day, they said thank you very much, and that was the end of that. Did wonder if the person I gave it to had kept it himself. I did dither a bit as I could really have used that money at the time.

Just read your story Cam - makes you believe in human nature after all.

Also had a nice thing happen to me in a car park. I pulled into space and a lady knocked on the car window having seen the car seat in the back with dd and asked me if she could get my car park ticket for me to save me the hassle of traipsing lo there and back - was speechless for a second as suprised at kindness.

Toothache · 18/09/2005 20:57

Aimsmum - She wasn't even that worried! All she said was "That was really lovely of you, I was wondering how I was going to hide it from my Husband. He's always getting onto me for stuff like this!".

It was even in a wallet... it was just lying loose at the bottom of the bag amongst the wallet, phone, teeth and specs!

In hindsight I wish I could've just kept even £500 of it.... I mean she was really lucky to get ANY of it back!
